Advocacy Academy - How to Make a City Great for Bicycling - Talking About Bike Lanes

Building a safe, interconnected network of protected bike lanes depends on gaining the support of people who only occasionally bike or never bike at all. We conducted research to understand people’s aspirations for mobility and the ways in which bike infrastructure can help them achieve their personal and civic goals. The results show majority support for building bike infrastructure that intensifies when connected to larger transportation improvements in roads, sidewalks and transit, delivering more mobility options, relief from congestion, greater safety to all and perceptions of a more livable community.

If there's anything I learned overtime, is that bicycling isn't this thing just for able-bodied fit men like I'd been taught around rural US suburbia, there are so many different types of bikes that can genuinely function (When we're not talking about incredibly long trips) as car replacements, my mind almost couldn't comprehend the idea of bicycling as a main mode of transport even with good biking experiences, in reality it was because of how many drivers are so incredibly unfriendly to bicycling alongside not really looking out for anything on the road other than other cars since their main concern is damage to their own vehicle. Seeing a largely bike-centric transport area for the first time, how much better it was, the higher amount of equity, health and mobility for all stunned me. Bakfeits, cargo bikes, bikes that attach for hand use to wheelchairs, upright comfortable bikes, bike trailers, truly the ways to use them are endless and I just wish people in the US, especially those stuck in suburbs or rural areas would learn more about it or even had more access to bicycling in the first place.

Gains in traffic flow and safety are so desirable. It's a wonder more places aren't applying these tactics to traffic management here in the USA.

I live in a decently sized city that is not the most bike friendly the lanes are a bit narrow and drivers do not give enough space not to mention the bike lanes are in major disrepair

Oof, host badly needs teleprompter lessons / practice. She's reflexively jerking her head and blinking out of nervous habit and it really shows.
