Advice to new polishers getting started - Evan's detailing and polishing
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this video I give out advice that I wish someone would have gave me when I started polishing 20 years ago. Yes I know it is long. Yes I know I ramble on and on and on. But.... This is all info I wish someone would have told me when I started. I would be a whole lot further than I am if I had someone like myself to help me out when I started. Thank you everyone for watching. Truly appreciate all of you.

Evan, I just want to thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I’m a full time driver, and do my own polishing and a little on the side for a few local guys. Any time I have any trouble, my first reaction is to get on KZread and see if you have a video pertaining to the particular problem I’m having. I’ve learned so much from you videos. Thanks again!

Awesome video Evan! Congratulations on 20 years of polishing. You are a credit to the industry, and to humanity in general. Your hard work, endurance,and humility are to be admired. You took a job that unfortunately is usually looked down on as "some dope head in a truck stop parking lot" and turned it into an international business. Outstanding! Mike Rowe would be proud. I look forward to the day I meet you(and I will!) Till then,GoShineOn!

Great watch. As a custom painter/commissioned artist and an auto detailer, word of mouth and quality of work speaks more volume than any form of advertising. I'm at the age now where I've been able to help teach younger artists how to airbrush and share with them the correct way of doing something, or the little things like "We can do it this way, or this way and get the same result." You clearly love what you do and it shows.

Your videos have really help and I appreciate all the tips you give. My parents own a towing company and we have 10 trucks that we buff once a year. Before I found your channel I was using a buffer with a wool pad and thought the results I was getting was 'as good as its going to get' . Now I use the orange and yellow buffs with the corresponding compounds from your website, and I'm getting amazing results to the point that it looks brand new again. It also cut my time in half on buffing. Keep up the good work.

Don't know if you've ever covered this but have you ever done a video on equipment maintenance. do a teardown on a grinder. inspecting the brushes. cleaning and inspecting the armature. Making sure the inside of the body is free of fibers/threads that can cut the wires/windings on the armature. I know the one I started out with 30 years ago was a Black & Decker wildcat 1500 RPMs. I have three of them still that I use. But one of the issues I had for the longest time was getting fibers down inside and cutting the wires/windings on the armature. One of my fixes was taking a Scotch Brite pad cutting it to fit inside the inspection shield which ended up keeping fibers from going in. Just think I it would be a great video. The grinder/polishers are your money makers.

Hello Evin, I love your advice and your videos. My question is what about the "turds" that people want polished? They don't want to take the wheels off and they're not paying for show? They just want it to shine at a good price, imperfections and all? Your thoughts?

Hey Evan can you help me understand what to buy to begin my polishing I am a driver my self I’m just trying to learn before I start polishing other peoples rigs
I also want to know about your shop. Do you run "big" air and pneumatic air tools? Stuff like dynabrade tools. Do you have a large pedestal ginders/buffers that have 1&1/4" arbors? Just curious because I know some one from Mn. who you bought machinery form? I have all of this type of machinery and was wondering if it is part of your business?
My first truck right now is a 1of 1 first show it was in one first place 🥇 and it’s got all kinda oxidation white marks on the back of it on the stainless wheel bends. I’m a noob at this but I gotta make this truck look good. I can’t let it go to the show the way it was it was parked under a leaky roof and is a mess it’s very clean now but just the back of the truck, I can’t get right

@@EvanStegerMetalPolishing - I watched the entire video but did not catch the part about mixing or using soap and compound. I have seen guys squirt some cloudy liquid on a tank and rub it in before running a buffer across it. If you can make a video explaining what the soap actually does to the aluminum surface that would be awesome. How to prepare the 50/50 mix. BTW, I went to a training you hosted in Orange County at a detail shop before the Truckin For Kids show in 2018. Thanks for doing what you do and more power to you and your team. Be safe! -Anthony
Evan how much time do you need to polish 4 drives 2 tanks and 2 steers ? I can get a load up there , no sanding needed I’ve done that and polished everything twice the metal is in great shape. I just don’t have the time I’m too slow. Lol
@EvanStegerMetalPolishing
3 жыл бұрын
If no sanding and it is in good shape just a few hours per truck.
My question is why don't you go from a orange wheel with a brown or a green compound to a white with white or blue compound why do you stick with yellow and green and thanks for the help man it is much appreciated
@EvanStegerMetalPolishing
3 жыл бұрын
White and blue compound are too soft and would be difficult to get the cut marks from the brown out going straight to white or blue. Need to mix in a softer compound before you can go to white or blue. But for me and my customers the finish from green is good enough and doesn't require using the white or blue to finish.
I have a 2018 tractor purchased new and have only driven it in warmer months. How do I clean frame without having to do everything by hand? Meaning rears,springs,shocks,chassis etc...
@EvanStegerMetalPolishing

Degreasers and foam washes. That is likely the best way to avoid hand washing. But hand washing is always the best route.
Can u sand aluminum on a pontoon boat that has pits?…..do you sell the polisher?
@EvanStegerMetalPolishing
Жыл бұрын
Yes you can sand it. I don't sell polishers but in the link of most of my videos I have the grinders that I use tagged with links to where I purchase them. Hope this helps. Thank you for watching.
How much do you charge per drive wheel not a show finish just a 2 step cut and color mounted on the truck front only??? Do you charge differently by the size either 22.5 or 24.5? Sorry I had to ask loll....
@EvanStegerMetalPolishing
3 жыл бұрын
I charge the same for fronts and rears. They take me about the same amount of time but my process is a little different. On a simple 2 step just quick cut and color no sanding while still on the truck I charge $25-35 a wheel.

I have a question can I use a purple buff with brown rouge and will it turn out nice?
@EvanStegerMetalPolishing
3 жыл бұрын
You can but the results always depend on what you are working on. If I use purple and brown on stainless or on really rough aluminum it might not do so well. Also if you use purple and brown on really nice aluminum it might be too aggressive and make more of a mess also. So it all depends on what you are working on.

Do you clean the surface in between cut and color? If so what do you use?
@EvanStegerMetalPolishing

I personally don't. But I know lots that do. If you use a cut and color bar that work together and not against each other you don't have to. Also I don't put too much on either. So their isn't a lot of residual behind for between each step.

Evan Steger thank you for the information. Someone let me use some of your chrome polish at the Britt truck show and I really like it. I’ll be making an order here sometime soon, I’m trying to decide if I should start from scratch with polish and buffs or use up what I have first. If I ever get a chance to come by your shop, I would like to get you to do my air cleaners. I suck at stainless, I’m not that great at aluminum either but I’m comfortable with doing it. Thanks again
Some people say polish is too expensive and I'm mobile service and here in Dallas some people say im too expensive but i only charge for my quality work. What can I do?
@GstarCurtis
3 жыл бұрын
Its sadly the way it is, as long as you dont charge excessively (i.e. beyond 100$/hr), its pretty normal. I have the same issue but in Denmark Europe. Its a totally normal trend. Showcase your work through Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin or whatever you use to promote your work. Thing about polishing being expensive is, its down to the individual. Some people will always say its too expensive, and then you got those guys that changes their mind, when they understand the amount of work it takes/sees how the finish is.
@EvanStegerMetalPolishing

You gotta understand that your services won't be for everyone. If your pricing is firm where you are at then do your thing. For me I had to adjust the quality I was putting out to match what my area wanted to pay. I had to adjust in order to stay busy. Now I can charge more now that I have a reputation and years of experience. I hope this info is helpful.
