To be honest, thank God for online Masters in Comp Sci that have concentrations in AI/ML (most notably Georgia Tech, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and University of Texas Austin). Whlst this will never equal getting a Ph.D., you will definitely have a strong ML background upon completing these programs.

it sorta seems like you're in denial about the requirements for some of these positions going forward. even though some people claim self-taught is ok, it likely isn't at this point. everything i've read says you'll likely need an advanced degree. it just sounds like you don't want to accept this reality.

regarding tools, dumbing down of society: driven people, people who appreciate making things and how things are made, will be smarter and more enlightened. However many people are not interested in such so they just waste their time on indulgences. That is why there's the saying 'smart phones make dumb people.' It's easy to think that in our engineer world bubble others are like us, but the average literacy rate has dropped dramatically since smart phones. Hence the premise of the movie Idiocracy
