For me it's milestones. Every stop sign, every traffic light, every intersection. Ride a block then pull over. Then ride two blocks then pull over and so on. Every left turn. Every right turn. Every u-turn. Every upshift and downshift. Everytime that I change lanes. Every single thing I do is a small success. Be patient. Those things will all add up and all the fear will be behind you.

This is a huge deal for me, I'm sitting right now beating myself up because I can't get myself up and out on the bike... searching for valid excuses not to go but then when I don't go I really beat myself up. It's insane. It's so so hard to drag myself out but once out it feels great. 🤷‍♂️

I hear you, and the crappy weather we have been having is a good one. But if you re-frame it go out in bad conditions will make you a better, more experienced, safer rider. Maybe do a reward scheme silly as it sounds, you're only allowed that beer/tv programme, etc if you did 1 hour on the bike. Do you have any friends who ride? We have a What'sApp group with friends of friends (who have now become good friends) about 12 in our group and every other weekend one of us is clucking to get out which spurs you on. Good luck with it Dave!

Stay local. Hit the parking lots for a while. When you feel confident enough get on a service road and get up through the higher gears. I just did that and it was amazing

My last bike was a 1982 Kawasaki 1000 CSR and the last time I rode it was 1995. Im 70 and I just bought a 2002 Kawasaki Concours ZG1000. And I am a bit fearful of it after all these years. Its a larger bike and has a fairing which is weird because I cannot see the front tire when turning the handlebars. So I have work to do on it before I ride it but the apprehension is still there. Thank you for your encouraging words. I think it will be fine, just a bit of nerves because its been so long.

Came here for juice from other beginners and experienced riders, and exactly 60 seconds into the video is a perfect example of why we should all be healthily aware and wired to ride defensively. The amount of distracted drivers on the road has never been higher, and likewise, my anxiety to jump on the new Honda 500 is way up there as well. Best of luck to everyone overcoming their chit, and reaping the rewards when they're out there doing it.

Just bought my 1st scooter and practiced atleast 15-20 minutes going just around our small area. I invited my wife to ride with me and unfortunately, we went down making a uturn and it deeply impacted me. I now fear of just going out and thinking of bumping or crashing. This video helped me feel that I will just keep on riding. Will check up next time once I overcome the jitters and anxiety of riding. Thank you!

Man this struck a chord. Just the sheer stress relief of going out for a ride for about an hour every week is exactly what one needs. I own multiple motorcycles however I've fallen into the trap of hardly ever going out for a ride any more and one sometimes wonders what's the point of owning bikes. The weather here in UK doesn't help but a bit of rain shouldn't really be a deterrent.

@realtimeentertainment7079the way I look at that is this. You’re the one on two wheels. People need to respect that you’re not in a shell like they are. Don’t ever think that you have to move out of the way for them. I’m not sure what laws are there. But here in the US, we have something called “share the road”. It’s illegal to not yield to even a bicycle.

I too get nervous especially taking a route that is unknown to me. Today I did that and ended up at a stop sign on a pretty steep hill with cars waiting for me. I almost panicked but managed to put my foot on the rear break applying throttle , releasing break and using the friction zone to take off. At least I know that I need to practice that skill some more. Thanks for the vid.

Thanks for sharing. Slightly comforting knowing that others feel the same way. Recently started to get back into riding a motorcycle after having done it in my youth. Got my 1st motorcycle at the age of 13. 50 year old now and about to take my road test in 1 month. Much bigger bike now, so my self taught bad habits are making me pay. Nonetheless, I do enjoy it once I'm out... but I can come up with every excuse imaginable not to put my gear on.

Exactly the same here , I’m 57 with 35 yrs car experience. This has helped but nervous with the bike . Passed my CBT, bougt a 125. The first 200 miles were really tough. Went for my DAS . Now up to 350 miles , Pad work was ok on the 650, then a ride out over the hills .. very nervous. Asked them for a break and would return after a few more miles solo ,- Watched moto jitsu and a few others , went to the industrial estate just as you did , practiced and practiced, scared of downhill so made my practice at my pace on the quieter days. More than once regretted buying a bike and spending £900 on clothes , practiced some more , ( push left go left push, push right go right ) dramatically improved my skills . Now up to 550 miles on the bike ,,,,,, The other day had a blast on the roads ……… keep going all those nervous folk …… enjoy the ride … going to start my DAS very soon …

Those are good pieces of advice: setting goals could be the right solution to me. I haven't so much time to ride so I can't feel secure enough to ride for hours and sometimes it ends with not going out with my bike. I started just some months ago with my "real" bike (I had a 125 before) and in the beginning, I rode on the highway and on the twisties but now I always feel a bit nervous to start. By the way then, when I'm ON the bike all that feels stop.

Excellent video Dom. You are absolutely right in what your saying it’s all relevant especially for a ‘new ‘ rider. The only way to learn to ride opposed to parsing your test is get and ride, practice slow stuff, junctions, roundabouts anything all will help you become a better confident rider. I passed my bike test in the early 90s, I ride in all weathers (except snow) to old for that now, rain, winds, night you have to know what to do if you have to ride in those conditions. Even now I do the car park playing it keeps my hand in every now and then. You are a confident rider Dom and what your saying is right on the mark. I enjoy your channel informative and well produced. I gave up riding due to anxiety over being afraid of head wind on dual carriageway this made me so unsettled that i sold my bike. Anything over 45 and the wind blast made me grab the bars like i was going to get blown off the back seat even with my knees desperately gripping the tank it just felt too much for me and its been years now since and i really regret it alot and feel a failure for not persevering more and actually fighting the fear with practice. Id love to try again im nearly 47 and worry itll scare me again but your video really inspires hope and better understanding that we all have similar worries and fears and that by doing it regularly it does reduce that anxiety or fear of the unknown.

I had no road experience only being 17 but after a couple of weeks, I got on my bike and slowly did some riding round the block with my dad following me. I found watching myself back on his dash cam very helpful as we sat and picked out the good and bad bits, then went again. I'm still nervous but do find it easier as my confidence grows. You never learn anything in life when it's all going smooth, so it's a process i wouldn't worry about as long as you take as much care as u can. Thank-you so much mate. I passed my test back in 2007 and rode for about 3 years until the kids came along. I recently bought myself a little 125 just to get back into it. Obviously it's slow and forgiving but I still have a fear of leaning, tightening radius bends and getting target fixation and slowing up too much for corners. It is comforting to know that you and others feel or have felt the same way at one point. I love motorcycles, but would love to be a more confident rider. Only 350 miles in, so it seems I just need to keep practicing and put myself is less than comfortable situations in order to build up more experience (and confidence). I've also been finding excuses not to ride, which is irrational as I really want to but can feel the anxiety levels rise as soon I was get the gear on! A really helpful video so thanks again,

You’re welcome friend; glad it helped. Anxiety never fully goes away (and I don’t think it should as it’s healthy on a bike). For me it’s under 20%. Repetition is the key; just keep going out and the more you get to know your bike, and the roads, the more it dissipates. I’m so thankful I stuck with it as motorcycling is a passion for me; I really love it and so glad I didn’t quit.

Amazing how knowledge shared 3 years ago hits well today. Bought my 125cc 03/10/2023, went to my camera club that night then 04/10/2023 rode 25miles to work all on A and B roads, max 50 mph. Had 2 cars up my rear end but I just yielded and let them get a speeding ticket. I failed my MOD 1 on the last exercise, 5kph to slow, and this was put down to a lack of confidence as I did not have a 125 to get road and bike confidence and experience in-between training and test. I have corrected that and taking the MOD 1 again in 8 week time ish. So as you pointed out, I am learning the finesse of bike riding which I already know will help me pass my DAS with more confidence. I wish you well and safe.

Great video! Been struggling with exactly what you mentioned at the start, wanting to go out and ride but always finding an excuse and never riding. I have ridden motorbikes for years mainly off road, then after two years on a 125cc on the road I was unable to ride at all for two years, bought myself a zx6r (probably not the best choice as a first big bike) and while the bike itself doesnt scare me, riding it on the road does. I love your idea of just going out a doing a simple 20 min ride once a week to build confidence and time on the bike, going to start putting that into practice starting this week i think! Also nice to know i'm not the only person who has this problem sometimes lol

I've had my CBT for around 6 months and getting ready to get my full license. Nervous riding is the thing that plagues me, especially recently. When I started riding I was thinking the exact same things but that went away after riding more and more. The winter came, I didn't have the gear yet so I didn't ride for a month or two. Started riding again recently and that fear came back stronger. But I reviewed my rides, watched more videos on how to ride (MotoJitsu was one of them, great YT channel!), including yours and the fear is going away. I just got to get back into a saddle and start riding again. Thanks for the video, it helped a lot!

Obtained my CBT in October… got a 125 in Dec… Bricking it almost every day… questioning myself, working out what I might have done differently… It can be har and it can be joyous! That feeling of having nailed a particular situation is pretty awesone! I have particular quirks that need working on and it’s a triumph every time I recognise one of them. I genuinely think there is a lot to be said for keeping it real and continuously learning… thinking your the bees knees from the off is definitely bad news in the waiting! If you go out every weekend for six months you will be so much more confident with your bike and if you can just do 30 min in every weather you then have no excuse and will fear nothing! When you ride is then a choice about what you like and don’t like (like the cold, or rain), not anxiety about if you can/can’t; because you have. 😊

I'm 36 and bought my 1st bike sorta on empulse and it sat for about a week as I was pretty nervous about riding it. I work really wonky hours at a state job so a MSF course wasn't an option, if I was gonna do it I had to do it myself. I quit drinking because I found I was getting into the habit of using the old " after work beer, ohh shucks, can't drive now" as an excuse not get out there and try it. Eventually I just forced myself out to our little road and... it all just worked. Bike didn't fall, my 1st turn was a low speed u turn and ... nothing happened, bike obeyed me and then I felt it dogging down so I went to shift and....it shifted lol. So now every day when I get off I do this course around town. Some days I go left, some days right, some days I ride to the river to have a smoke when it's really early and the river has that sweet low fog on it. But God...I was terrified at the start.

Brilliant video bud, having just gotten my first (albeit boring) set of 2 wheels (its a honda vision 100, we all start somewhere , yes not a bike but its 2 wheels and still a bucket of fun) I've been dreading some of the roads, arguably not the best bike for where I am. However a lot comes down to confidence. I've happily seen people on 50ccs and 125cc peds taking the country roads which are bumpy, ruined and awful. (and put the fear of god up me) That bit of advice is something I always hold close is just to ride, no reason needed, just ride. Set a goal, it can be a boring goal, get to the co-op. Go to McDonalds (other fast food is available) go and explore some nice roads, whatever it is get a goal. My goal is to tackle two roads near me in 3 weeks. These are to B roads (40 mph limit enforced with 30s going through the villages) which are open, windy and tight. Am I bricking it, yes. Is it a goal, yes. They'll be my daily roads for my new job. Then after I've tackled those, its on to the city riding. Another thing to learn for me. So what have I done? I've made a route not yet touching these roads, but some like it which are typically quieter. Some even in worse condition, and I ride them daily. Incorporate them into a 1 hour / 30-40 mile long route and my goal is to do 1 lap of that every 2 days. There's still wind, average sits at anywhere between 20-27 mph and gusts up to about 35 mph. Which some say is too much for a ped on majority country roads, and yeah it could be. But that's the reality of riding one that I have to learn to live with. Eventually I'm going to ride the route I normally do, but pluck up the courage to turn to these roads, and ride them. It'll be scary at first, yes. After a few times though, I'll be certain its just like any other road I've been on on my regular routes. Some may even be worse (one honestly looks like a warzone) The things I've already learnt to take to heart after only a fortnight of riding: 1: Just ride, you're only going to grow by riding. 2: Mistakes happen, its part of learning, you learn from these mistakes 3: Enjoy it 4: Trust the bike. 5: HGVs are the devil incarnate.

I'm fortunate enough to kind of be forced to practice slow speed stuff, the ANPR activated gates at the office car park won't open (surprise surprise...), but right next to them is a pedestrian gate that's wide enough to ride through under power (and I'm cheeky enough to do it until told otherwise 😛). 2mph it is 😁

Fantastic video really helpful, I am just returning to riding after a 3 year absence (2 big shoulder ops and complications) and feeling like I totally have to start all over again. Had a couple of short bimbles out which I didn't enjoy one bit and felt disproportionately nervous during them (I expected to be rusty but not anxious as that's not how I usually am about things?). Currently I am still wanting to get out but also maybe doing as you said and making excuses why not to as well! Just need to remember where I left my lady balls lol and get on with it as like yourself its something I am really passionate about but the bloody angst gremlins keep whispering in my ears! Will definitely take on board and try what you suggest though so thank you and best of luck growing the channel! 👍

Anxiety is a nightmare - just think if you don't take the bike out the battery will go flat (hide the trickle charger) so just ride up the road and back and sit on it for 20 min every weekend to get a "charge". The trip down the road will soon turn into longer. One saying that really helps my nerves is that the physical emotions of being scared and excited are the same. So just say "I'm excited" and your brain doesn't know the difference.

@@yodomcat that's great advice too thank you! I have been starting it up and sitting on it playing a little with bite point etc but its a bit noisy (ahem I love my KTM lol) so I don't do it for too long to be considerate to my neighbors but will totally take on board your wise words and its actually reassuring to hear other people have felt this way too and successfully come out the other side! 😁 thanks again 👍

Love this video. I just passed mod 1 but they wouldn’t put me forward for the mod 2 test because I seemed nervous and tense on the bike (I’m ok on the 125 but I was getting used to it). I think I just need more time to get used to it and chill, but unfortunately I didn’t have that time on the course.

I stopped going out in the rain when I bought a new bike. Not because I'm afraid to ride in the rain, but because I'm afraid for my FZ1. These bikes are prone to corrosion so it takes me ages to jetwash, clean and polish it afterwards, although I have been caught in the rain on occasion. Been riding since 1972 and used to ride in all weathers, but now take the car in the wet. Duel carriageways are much safer than A-roads, but I appreciate your concern with 125s that have difficulty keeping up with fast flowing traffic.

Different bikes handle the wet (and salt) so differently. ACF-50 is great protection, or WD-40 to an extent but you need a good whole afternoon to apply the protection and only really covers you for a couple of rides. The RR is Hockenheim Silver so any wet weather means it needs a wash after; I spend more time cleaning her than riding her! 🤷🏻‍♂️ with my old triple I think she got a bath once a month; just didn’t show up the dirt and nothing rusted. I want to try a ceramic coat and see if that works as hearing good things; but it’s very expensive! £2/300 to do my RR!

@@yodomcat Yeah, good advice. I traded in a VFR750 that also suffered from wet weather and the salt seized the chain hub adjuster which cost a couple of hundred to put right. I don't think my SV650S would fair much better, yet my old 1980 CB650Z had no problems whatsoever. I think they were better made back then with better alloys

This is exactly what I feel now. Pass the test 29 year’s ago and never ride again, until now. When on the bike, I can ride. But the hardest part is pushing the bike out of the garage and ride. Always give myself some excuse to not going out riding. I think something to do with me dropping my bike the first day out. But I will do this exercise and not just try. 😁

Take a look on the channel I did a video on me dropping a bike. It happens so often, and again the more you move it around the more it becomes second nature and less chance of getting caught out.

  • @anthonyso7761

Yeah, I drop my bike again 😅this time even more worse. At first I drop it on the left side and because it is on a hill, It start rolling backward. And after I pick it up, it flips to the other side and hit the car behind.😓 At the same time, there was three bikers there and they helping me out to pickup the bike and move it out of the way. Once they know I drop my bike and they know I must be in neutral when I am stop at the top. And I told them the bike roll backward, they said always put it in first gear so it won’t roll. So this year my insurance bonus is gone, and next year premium will be going up for sure. 😭

@@anthonyso7761 i feel for man that sucks and is embarrassing, but it is a learning curve. I’ve just changed form the s1000RR to the 1000R and the difference is massive weight wise. The R I can throw around jab the brakes and no fear of dropping it; whereas the RR was a constant fear on slow speed stuff (and I looked so awkward moving it around). Just have to keep at it my friend. But do try some other bikes and see if they’re easier.

Dom Cat I was using the same iPhone earphone set up , but I’ve set with the Ghost X and I’m happy with the sound, which is making editing easier for me. Hardest part for me is keeping talking. I’m sure it’ll come with practice. You still got the Triple? That was my other bike of choice earlier this year, lovely bikes, although I’m very happy with my 790 now.

The Duke I’ve now switched to external recording on a dictaphone with the purple panda (iPhone is great until someone calls you)! Will try the GoPro brick next. Also use a sena pack talk but just found out it only works when you have a group and not solo; which is criminal as the audio is sweet as from that! New vid coming soon on the bike (spoiler I have a s1000rr now 🤦🏻‍♂️😂). The new triple in my opinion is still the best bike on the market. The 790 is close; you just need to ask if you want the refinement or hooglanism 😉 oh and of course £5/6k in the difference! The s1000 is just simply amazing; but for a time.
