Never fails to amaze me the level of devotion that the Thais (and other SE Asian countries) put into the artistry of their temples and shrines! That seven headed serpent is epic! Ahh the dip for the mango brings back to many memories! See you weren't keen but I definitely love it 😂

Not much in Nong Khai for touristy stuff ... but having dinner and drinks by the Mekong river at sunset is really nice. Especially during this time of the year. Paddy didn't show or mentioned it but... for those who haven't been here since the last two years... they finished a really nice walking and biking path right along the river, from the white temple (where he took the boat out) all the way to Wat Mee Chai. Hopefully, it will eventually go all the way to underneath the Friendship bridge. That's a long nice path to jog, bike, skate and enjoy the river. Really enjoy that scenery 👌 👍

The temple and a few other things force you onto the road. At various bit. In 2014 it ran out just at the entrance to Nong Khai park, just past the big temple.

@@ricecookerbaking In 2014 the walkway came to a dead stop at the temple next to the park entrance and you had to dog leg around it. IIRC it then a bit later hit a massive engineering facility - a huge steel device right next to the river. I couldn't see the walkway ever continuing at the price of moving that. They were expanding the riverside frontage down at the other end - massive pile driving and concrete - beyond the covered market, and opposite another temple (near the little exercise machines) God knows why; what was there was pretty dead.

My Danish Cdn friend lived in Nong Khai with his Thai wife, who was the wife of my then Thai GF, who lived in Dongwattana village near Ban Dung, Issan. I went golfing many times at nearby Victory GC with my beery buddies from Eddie's Bar in Ban Dung. Good times from 2010 to 2012. Many of the Nong Khai Business people are actually Chinese who were kicked out of Hanoi in the 1960's. Those with vehicles drove them from Hanoi to Dien Bien Phu, thru Laos & into Thailand. My Danish friend bought Heineken Beer from one of these Chinese expats. He spoke very good English, as his 2 daughters were educated in Canada. One is a Doctor 7 the other is a Dentist in Ottawa ON. he goes to visit them every spring for a few months.

We hope to go to Thailand again in January, but have to see if how things are going with the covid situation both in Europe and in Thailand. Greetings from Me Kao (Polar bear) in Norway. Hi Paddy, Great video. The Sala Keoku temple used to be a temple ground when I visited the place about 35 years ago. A white robe priest used to managed the whole temple ground which had Buddhist and Hindu statues. The attic of the main temple was used to keep the relics and antiques from the Burmeses and Thai war period which the priest showed me. I supposed they are now housed in a museum somewhere in Nongkai. This video definitely bring back fond memories of Nongkai. Hope to visit the newly developed Nongkai again.

I was on the train from Nong Khai to Udon Thani with a Norwegian lad who'd been in Laos. I asked what it was like. He said, "Exactly like here but you have to have a massive fight every time to avoid paying huge farang prices". I'm sure you can come across from Laos no problem. TescoLotus in Nong Khai is full of Laotians shopping. I spoke to a Laotian guy in 2018 on the train up to Udon. He'd been (IIRC) in Malaysia/Indonesia. He said that Laos is notionally communist, but you can have a business.

The Nong!! Spent over five weeks there in 2014. Nearly went mad. I kept getting lost. It turns out Mekong means sod all to the locals. Mae Nam is what you're looking for to orientate yourself; Mother River. 8:40 The interesting thing about that street is that they have 20 baht noodle places for schoolkids. It's nuts. I don't know what the deal is, whether it's to keep them going until their parents finish work. But still in uniform they all sit and have a bowl!

Obrigada de coração pelos seus vídeos sinto apenas que os templos paisagens etc. não são vistos completamente. Gosto muito de ver interiores. Desculpe por fazer esta observação pois estou gostando muito.

Nice video but you forgot to mention the story of the artist who created the Sala Keoku. Last time I saw him he was in a wheelchair. It was probably 35 years ago...

You’re quite nice, Paddy. I’ve been there a dozen times to enjoy the gym there but didn’t find enough to do there to make me want to leave Udon Thani.

We visited the Buddha Park when we were last in Thailand, but we also visited the first Buddha Park in Vientiane Laos. The artist started there, but when the communists came to power, he moved to Thailand, and started this ART installation again. It was Crazy busy when we were there. Busloads of tourists, ah, the pre covid days, yes!? I'm glad you had the place to yourself, to enjoy that artists Spirit and Love of his Buddhist Nations.

Mae Nam Kong means, Mother of all Rivers. It is abbreviated to Mekong, foreigners add River when Kong means River. It is pronounced Meekong by foreigners and Maekong by Thais.

Perhaps with some of the places you visit you take photos or extract stills from your videos for translation by a native Thai speaker? Professional translation is expensive but I would not be surprised that many Thais are watching your channel who may be able to help you. Of course you have Thai friends who can help you as well. I think this aspect will help with immersion into the places that you visit.

10 years ago the airline lost our luggage and we had two hours to kill. My wife`s family took me to see the statues and it was amazing. 20 Baht for the "farang" price back then! You are almost to our Province! (#77)
