Advancing with Watercolor Creating a Center of Interest - "Tête à tête"
This is a video done as a supplement to a watercolor class taught by Gary Tucker in Boston. This is the first of a series of 8 lessons that will use various scenes of Paris as a motif. The lessons will focus on design , in particular visualizing a center of interest and using this as a means to compose the painting. Technically we will be focusing on graded washes in all sorts of applications. In this exercise you will notice how they work to create luminosity in the final painting.
This painting utilizes and underpainting of yellow ochre with smaller amounts of cad red and cobalt blue. The darker washes are created by various mixtures of Burnt sienna and ultramarine blue.

Beautiful! So much light and great contrast.
You are such a good teacher and it’s wonderful that you are so generously sharing your knowledge. I really enjoy watching your paintings come to life.
Paris est toujours plus beau avec votre travail. Merci
Just brilliant, I could actually grasp your teaching of the graded wash. Thank you
thank you very much Mr. Tucker for your detailed lesson.
I love how you use the initial washes to create the areas of light and shade and to give the overall mood of the painting. As a beginner I find it very difficult to paint in this loose style. I am very literal! I will continue to practice. Your videos give me inspiration, thank you Gary
Thank you so much Gary. Fantastic as always!
I love the way you recreate light. Thanks.
At last, a painter that describes what and why he does things in detail. It's rare to find a natural artist/ teacher. Really glad I've found you.
Great stuff. It always looks so easy when someone with talent and experience does it.
Fabulous painting and instruction, thanks Gary
Super tutorial and painting. Thanks for mentioning the colours as well. Amazing what can be created with so few, I keep having to tell myself that.
Thank you Gary! You have changed the way I look at watercolor paintings. Great tutorial.

Hello Joanne, how are you doing my dearest, I hope you don’t find my message scary, my name is Jef and am just looking for someone to talk to, I have been to so many dating apps, but too many fake friends, you’re looking so adorable and they is something very special about you that I can’t seems to understand till I get to know you more, I hope and pray you’re not taken beautiful one?
Superb and immensely eloquent. Thank you
This is like magic to me. I watched the whole video. I paused several times. The end result is like the creation of the universe. I understand it happened, I just don’t understand how. From blotches of discoloured water you created brilliant art. I saw it with my own eyes, yet I still can’t believe it. WOW.
Gorgeous work. Thank you.
Wow 🤩. I have fallen in love with your inspirational paintings - you just guide the viewer’s eyes with play of colours and hues, and they do the rest i.e. visualise the real picture. What an art or should I say, what a magic show !!

Thank you Suresh - Magic - yes - it comes out towards the end
More and more we want from you.... just enjoy your creation....
Gary, Thank you especially for mentioning, "The paper is dry now..." In instructional videos teaching watercolor technique, it's usually impossible to tell how much time has lapsed between stages of a painting in progress. The drying time of various washes is important for a student a watercolorist to master. Great instruction here.

Wow. You are opening my eyes, thanks
I word in many different medium but street scenes in water colour seem to be so much harder for me. Thank you so much for explaining and really ensuring the viewers/student gets some in sight to your thought process. I am very impressed and will go to see your website again many thanks.
A very good instruction. Thank you.
Love this tutorial and the painting is so good. It reminds me of a book called Colour and Light by Jean Haines. Not the same topic, but the painting reminds me of what she talked about regarding showing light.
Your tutorial is exactly what I have been looking for - it does explain this perfect technic and at the same time it inspires me like hell, thank you for that !!

Great tutorial.... loved it!
This is an absolutely brilliant tutorial. If anyone is a novice to watercolors hang on every word that Is said.
Thank you Gary.
Thanks so much Garry! I tried it and came out fine. Learnt a lot in the process.
This is a really good chance for people to see how to do a first wash to create feeling and color. I think that many people do not understand first wash, they just start painting away. I hope you have a lot of viewers on this one and then next one, too. Bravo!

@ Dan Thomas... that's the nature of watercolor... it takes a little getting used to when you're starting out in watercolor... I remember years ago one of the books I had on painting watercolors had the 50% rule which was that your paint would dry 50% lighter than when 1st applied
Wonderful, Thank you!!
Great piece, thanks.

Wow!
I realized here that one of my many mistakes or problems was using watercolour pans which have their place but make it difficult to produce the dry brush effect on a larger brush. I realized this when I tried the colour drill practice before an (unsuccessful) attempt at reproducing the effect with the following 'Autum's Glow'. I shall persevere with many thanks for your careful, thoughtful and encouraging instruction.

Hello beautiful Dawn, how are you my dear?
Fabulous, what are the dimensions of the paper you are using please?
Amazing
Very nice, the vertical version seems more intimate for some reason while the demonstration painting with the figure pointing keeps pushing my view out and then the shadows draw me back to the focal point again. Really clever.
