Emphasis is a relative trait. An idea can only be emphasized relative to something else-so for an idea to feel emphasized, you need a second idea against which to emphasize it. That’s the idea that instructor Ben Camp puts forth in this video from the Berklee Online graduate-level course, Songs Unmasked: Techniques and Tips for Songwriting Success. After you have placed ideas to emphasize beside each other, you can compare these ideas. When comparing ideas, it is useful to examine the absolute traits of each idea (i.e., brightness, pitch, tempo, etc.), as well as their relationship to each other. What makes them alike?
