Around the world over 50 million people suffer limb amputation due to traumatic causes. For patients recovering from a medical emergency, entering the new world of prosthetics can be painful. Most want to return to normal life: to drive a car, to workout at the gym, to clean up around the house. But most traditional prosthetic limbs are crude, expensive, and fragile. Approximately 10% of patients requiring an advanced prosthetic arm can afford them today.
One company trying to upend the market is PSYONIC, creator of the Ability Hand. Designed and manufactured in-house with hybrid manufacturing methods, including 3D printing, injection and silicone molding, and CNC machines, the Ability Hand is promising to restore their life, and mobility, back to what it was.
In this post, we sit down with CEO Aadeel Akhtar, PhD and lead Mechanical Engineer James Austin to learn how they built the Ability Hand, and how 3D printing was a vital part of their go-to-market strategy. We’ll also meet Sergeant Garrett Anderson, one of the first power-users of the Ability Hand.

im a guitarist of over a decade and I have sarcoma cancer, the doctors are planning on amputating my left hand so I will probably never be able to play guitar again but this gives me hope that maybe ill be able to find a company who's willing to go the extra mile to make something that could restore the ability that I lost.

The guy is right. I became paralyzed September of 23 and you never know what you take for granted till you lose it. Guys, appreciate what you have, because there are people out there that don’t have it.

This is incredible. You've thought through so attentively to so many details even down to affordability. I am so excited to see you guys continue to advance this research! As a nurse I see so many broken bodies. This is amazing to see this form of creativity and advocacy for humans on the technological, innovative design end. Wow. :)

When do you think a functional bending wrist will be possible? I think that joints are one of the last major critical aspects to realistic functionality. Keep going, you all are doing miracles!!!

This is very impressive. But tbh, the state bionic limbs are in general despite the huge progress in AI, robotics etc, is somewhat lackluster. Is the market for these things so small that companies just don't invest?

If for some reason insurance doesn't cover it or parts of it, then it's Between 15-20K for the arm depending on the model etc etc... I'm guessing the insurance part is for US citizens, different countries different deals

Watched you on Shark Tank. Was wondering why you didn't do feet as well ? I realize that it is our feet do a completely different job than hands. However, statistically, you could double your business by doing feet. Just a thought. Thanks.
