When I was in Japan studying abroad, I had to move five times in one year. I became quite used to visiting city offices, ward offices, and other city buildings. It left such an impact on me that it's one of the biggest reasons I don't really want to live in Japan long-term. It weeds out the weak BUT I don't ever complain about the DMV anymore. That stuff is a breeze.

I TOTALLY agree with this! For some reason, Japan really hates to computerize these types of things. So EVERYTHING is a handwritten form with tons of text. I'm sure that if you wanted to, you could learn Japanese in its entirety if you just read all the forms you have to fill out. I experienced the same idiocy even at the language school where I studied. So I suppose this was a cultural lesson in bureaucracy in and of itself. But seriously...How can a country that is trying to become a "world leader in technology" still have many major areas that are stuck in either the pre or early Internet development stage? Please don't get me wrong, I love Japan and find it absolutely fascinating, but I don't see how they are going to move forward without looking at their inadvertent aversion to technology. (PS. US bureaucracy, I'm looking at you too.)

I haven't read it myself, but it seems to have been quite successful and also a bit controversial, just like the autor's latest book. I'll check it out sometime. On another note, I found you the other day through Twitter and have been binge-watching your videos since. I like your humour and taste in music (esp. Shiina Ringo/Tokyo Jihen)! Seeing your Japanese novel/随筆 writings on Amazon was really inspiring for me - I've been thinking about writing in Japanese for quite some time and have never tried it so far, but after seeing your stuff I'll definitely give it a shot.
