Advanced EDM Techniques for Engineers

Ғылым және технология

Electrical Discharge Machining has revolutionized machining. Carl Sommer has produced a video showing the unique capabilities for engineers. Sommer provides an overview of the three EDM processes: wire, ram, and small hole EDM. He has discovered that give Engineers the basic concepts of EDM, and they can come up with all sorts of designs. EDM can be the most cost effective method of machining, even for complex parts. Things that were once impossible to machine are now being done with EDM.
Sommer is the president of the largest EDM job shop in North America. He has also co-authored with his son Steve, a mechanical engineer, Complete EDM Handbook. The handbook is free at their website.

When finishing in aluninum with a small graphite electrode , I almost always have a little build up on the electrode that leaves a small pit in the aluminum. I 'm not sure what is causing this. Any suggestions? Thanks

4:06 That is obviously the slug of scrap that came out when the extrusion die mentioned was made, right? I'm curious which end of the hole was the slug pushed out of!

If a slug is tapered, it must always come out of the larger opening. Carl Sommer

@ 4:00 You say the upper head moves independently of the bottom, I program Fanuc wire machines and it is the bottom that moves, the top is stationary. Are yours different?

There are machines that have heads that move independently.

He probably means relatively, the same way I visualize an end mill in the Bridgeport moving around when it is actually the workpiece that moves around. Relative to the workpiece, both the upper and lower heads are moving on a wire EDM.

hello sir I am making my own micro edm machine . my edm machines cuts 0.003 in a second I want a feed rate in accordance to this I am unable to get this feed rate at the lowest that I can get is F=1 . which is not compatible for me how can I get much less feed back. I want a feed rate of F=.18(MM/MIN)

@Iker Emilio I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm trying it out now. I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.

I've seen a few engineers who could solve really difficult problems. But in too many cases I think an engineering degree is just an agreed-upon stand-in which is accepted in the place of actual common sense. By "common sense" I mean an intuitive understanding of Newtonian physics, properties of common materials, and other general mechanical principles.
