It’s been 1 year this month since I started learning piano and it’s been an amazing and somewhat life changing experience! You may think life changing is a little over the top… but for me it really is true, as this September I will become a full-time music student at University and I’m beyond excited for that!
I decided to make my own 1 year progress video, after watching so many myself before finally committing to purchasing my own digital piano. Who knows, maybe if it wasn’t for those videos I wouldn’t have ever taken that first step, which is crazy to think looking back now! That’s why I decided it was important for me to record these clips and make a video, in hopes of motivating someone else to take up an instrument, giving it there all and seeing where they can go with it too.
Up until month 8 I used Jane's piano tutorials to learn 99% of the music I learnt. She is a retired math teacher and dedicates her free time to playing through requested pieces by viewers every single day! Mostly all classical pieces have a tutorial and many popular video game, anime, TV shows and movie compositions can be found on her channel. If you really want to learn but can't afford a teacher, I think this would be your best option.
Jane's channel: / @janepianotutorials
There are a few pieces I learnt on my own and for lessons which I didn’t put in the video due to time/not recording, so below is a more detailed breakdown of what was happening every month:
Month 1:

As a veteran pianist, this is my advice to anyone who wants to learn: *You must have the ‘want’ and ‘drive’ to learn this instrument. It can be personal or completely beside reason, you have to have a strong argument as to why you want to learn and not because it just looks cool, cause if that’s the mindset, your going to crash hard and abandon it faster than a dad going to the store to buy milk! Have a purpose, just a warning….* *Define the type of music you like and roll with it. It’s never a bad idea to go into classical works and learning about theory and applied music knowledge, but you want to learn so you can play the music you like, so go from there!* *Play for the love and passion for music, not for spite or revenge. You’ll be introduced to a lot of others that will make you feel inadequate and intimidated. Every artist bring their style to the table, and that’s never something to be ashamed of. Be humble and build yourself and your repertoire.* With this, you have a basic foundation for almost anything musical.

I played fantasy impromptu in my final year of college after 13 years of the piano, meedless to say its hard. Although he played it well i just have to point out that it takes alittle longer then a year to gain the skill, and it took me like 4 to 6 monthes to learn the piece. So almost half of his practice time.

I’m calling this out. The guy already knows how to play the piano and made this 1 year progression look like he learned Fantasy impromptu within a year. I’ve been taking classical piano since age 7. Took me 8 months just to play Fantasy Impromptu at the age of 15. You need to build dexterity, muscle memory, and several other aspects to play this piece that you can’t learn by teaching yourself in 1 year.

I've been playing less than I year and I am working on fantasie impromptu. The hardest part of Chopin's Op 66. is the poly rhythm and even that isn't that hard. Many of his other etudes are much harder in terms of muscle memory and dexterity. People also learn at different speeds than others. Just because it took YOU that long doesn't mean others can't learn it faster.

Going from nothing to what’s regarded as one of the most difficult pieces of all time in a year is nearly impossible. The technique that you need to perform it is not something you learn in a year. It is something that takes many years for most people. Playing it with good musical expression is even more difficult, and not only requires years of piano practice, but also constant exposure to this kind of music. It is reasonable to take many more months to learn an intermediate piece for an intermediate piano player. This guy is a really good pianist but a bad liar.

@@Offic139 That is simply untrue. Chopin has many, many pieces that are far less demanding than Fantaisie Impromptu. All but possibly one of the Nocturnes for starters. Is Fantaisie Impromptu one of the hardest pieces ever? Of course not. However, it is a legitimately advanced piece that requires technique. It certainly isn't something that a beginner can play in a year. A very, very capable beginner might get there in five. The original poster might have been incorrect about the piece being one of the hardest pieces ever but essentially everything else that she said is correct.

700+ hours of playing. You only spend 30 minutes a week which equivalents to 36 hours of playing in 1.5 years. The difference is the guy spends too much time playing the piano and he’s really good at it too. Formula for this: 30 minutes a week x 4 weeks = 120 minutes a month 120 m/m x 18 months = 2160 minutes If converted it is only 36 hours of playing We can now find the solution for how many times a week he spends on the piano. 700 hours a year in minutes = 42000 minutes a year 42000 minutes / 12 months = 3500 minutes a month 3500 minutes / 4 weeks = 875 minutes a week 875 minutes / 7 days = 125 minutes a day Which means 2 hours a day!!! This is really encouraging for me to keep playing the piano. I will now practice from 1 hour to 3 hour a day because of this. But I have yet to master sheet reading because I believe learning sight reading is an essential skill for this accomplishment, so it’s gonna take a bit longer. I’ll be satisfied if I atleast managed to master Clair De Lune in 1 year of practicing from now. PS: I realized converting hours to minutes is kinda inaccurate so… 700 hours / 12 months = 58.333333… hours a month 58.333333… / 4 weeks = 14.583333…. hours a week 14.583333… / 7 days = 2.0833333…. hours a day 2.0833333… is 125 minutes. 2 hours and 5 minutes exactly

Not necessarily. I grew up with a completely religious family that wouldn't even allow me near music let alone a piano but I'm at "week 2" in my progress now and can play what he plays, by week 3 I'll probably be able to play Fur Elise too. I just need to keep playing 4 hours a day if I want to keep up LOL. The first week I was obsessed and sometimes spent 10 hours in a single day until I got backpain and a sore butt. But I'm using SimplyPiano so idk how he could get so far so quickly unless he was paying for music lessons or using the same app. The point is fast progress doesn't mean necessarily that you had a head start as a kid because I'm a living proof of that since my childhood was nearly deprived of music completely. I just spent a lot of time practicing and having fun.

So I’ll say, either way, thank you ❤

It’s not fake he’s just skilled and always spends time playing the piano. I think sight reading could help if trying to accomplish this. Here is a formula to prove it ain’t fake: 700 hours / 12 months = 58.333333… hours a month 58.333333… / 4 weeks = 14.583333…. hours a week 14.583333… / 7 days = 2.0833333…. hours a day 2.0833333… is 125 minutes. 2 hours and 5 minutes exactly Since 700+ hours we can safely assume he spends 2+ hours in a day.

Zachary Hunt not necessarily. There’s pros and cons to both sides (starting at an early age, starting at a later) as long as you don’t have a packed schedule as an adult and can shuffle in 1-2 hours or so a day of practice. The harder part with starting as an adult IS that you have other things that may take priority over practice in your life. (Academics, work, etc.)

Fantaisie Impromptu is on the easier end of the diploma level piano repertoire. It is significantly harder than anything on the grade 8 syllabus. If you've played that piece well after such a short time you just might be the most talented person that ever sat at a piano. It takes ordinary people years to get to that level - at least eight in most cases.

Hear me out when I say this: Upon analysing this video and his progress, I have come to the conclusion that this video is most likely a fake, and a misleading progress video. Here are the reasons for my conclusion. 1. Finger posture. If you take a look closely at his fingers as he just begins in first week, his fingers are curved. This is the ideal standard for any pianists. However, he is in his FIRST week. In the first week, you simply don't expect a beginner to have excellent finger posture (take a look at Day 4 for example). In the first few weeks of picking up a new instrument, a beginner would always try to experiment with how to play the instrument; for piano, the first few days of a beginner's journey is always to try and see how to play the piano; and for violin, the first few weeks for a beginner is always playing pizzicato on the violin, instead of jumping right to playing with a bow properly. Thus, his accurate finger posture is very unbelievable for a beginner in his first week. 2. Reading music: In Day 4 up to the end of the first month, he appears to be looking, and reading off a sheet of music. In his first month, he states in his description that he started off with: "Random beginner piano tutorials and books (stopped trying to read music and started to learn music through online tutorials)". However, if you take a look at his music stand, a sheet of music is always there, and he seems to be reading off it consistently. Furthermore, he has to have some prior knowledge as to how to read a sheet of music, as he's in fact playing two hands coordinated in sync with one another. Normally, as a beginner, when you have no knowledge as to how to read music, and "stopped trying to read music", you wouldn't have the skill to play two hands coordinated together. Even if a beginner knows how to read music, they would not be able to read and play two hands together at the same time, and normally starts off with one hand. Thus, the description of the video, and the actual content in the video is very conflicting to the viewer, making the video less credible. 3. Repertoire: Let's list some of the pieces he has learnt in his progress, and the difficulty level of each of the piece. 1. Fur Elise 2:11 (Week 3) Let's quote a professional with a doctorate in music composition and classical music as to the difficulty level of this piece. "The work in its original form is quite difficult, and the below link shows why. There are several challenging sections that are less familiar primarily because of the unpleasant habit of many publishers and editors to vandalise works of the great composers by removing the difficult parts and dumbing down what is left. As a result there are several spurious versions that could be reasonably performed by an accomplished Grade 3 (ABRSM) student. The original version is around Grade 5 for ABRSM (the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music). In some syllabuses in the Americas it appears as Grade 7, presumably because their grading system is different or it is considered more difficult." In his playing, there are no traces of the "several challenging sections that are less familiar". To check out those sections, you can refer to Steinway artist Lang Lang's performance of the same piece kzread.info/dash/bejne/pWtlq8F-h63RZ6w.html . From the above observation, I assume that he is around ABRSM Grade 3 Standard by Week 3. That's less than a month for you to play a Grade 3 Standard piece. This may not be the most accurate representation, but here is a music teacher's approximation of the time it takes for a beginner to pass each Grade. "Beginner to Grade 1 - 23 months Grade 1 to Grade 2 - 17 months Grade 2 to Grade 3 - 13 months Grade 3 to Grade 4 - 11 months Grade 4 to Grade 5 - 15.5 months Grade 5 to Grade 6 - 18 months Grade 6 to Grade 7 - 13.5 months Grade 7 to Grade 8 - 15 months" To skip from beginner to play a Grade 3 Standard piece, including all the techniques (I believe I heard pedal sustaining the left hand as well?), in less than a month, is certainly a very impressive feat, so impressive it becomes quite questionable to the legitimacy of your progress. Clair De Lune 5:06 (Month 5): Clair De Lune is largely regarded as a piece which takes around Grade 7 to play. According to a user on an ABRSM forum regarding the grade of Clair De Lune, he states that: "I don't think pieces like clair de lune can be classified into grades but I do feel that in order to play the piece perfectly you should be used to grade 7 standard atleast.” According to many other sources which you can conveniently search up by typing "Clair De Lune grade", they all agree that Clair De Lune requires about Grade 7 level to play it. Let's refer back to the figure approximated by the piano teacher. "Beginner to Grade 1 - 23 months Grade 1 to Grade 2 - 17 months Grade 2 to Grade 3 - 13 months Grade 3 to Grade 4 - 11 months Grade 4 to Grade 5 - 15.5 months Grade 5 to Grade 6 - 18 months Grade 6 to Grade 7 - 13.5 months Grade 7 to Grade 8 - 15 months" From Beginner to Grade 7, you'll need about 23+17+11+13+15.5+18+13.5=111 months to reach Grade 7 standard. You played a Grade 7 Standard piece in 5 months! From this, I conclude that you must either be a piano prodigy, or you might have had prior piano training and is not a "true beginner" as to say. In month 10, you played Chopin Nocturne in C# Minor (opus posth) 9:06 (Month 10). Similarly, that is also a Grade 7 Standard piece, so you can refer to my explanation above. At the end of 1 year, you played Chopin - Fantaisie-Impromptu (op66 posth) 13:00 . In the RCM (Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto)) piano syllabus, Chopin's Fantasy Impromptu is considered diploma-level. To reach a diploma level, you have already passed all levels from beginner to grade 8. No matter how many hours you have practised, 1 year is not enough. To build up a steady foundation to support you to your level of playing at the end of your progress video (which is very proficient, I must say), you will need a very long time to learn the proper and correct technique. I hear very clean pedal, crystal clear runs in the right hand, and smooth arpeggios in the left hand. These techniques all take a LOT of practise and steady foundation to gradually help and assist you to the level of playing you had in the end. Can I ask how long you have been sightreading fantaisie impromptu? If your video was true, you would have taken at most a year to sightread fantaisie impromptu, which is very unlikely as you mentioned earlier you didn't even know how to sightread sheet music. Furthermore, fantaisie impromptu is memorised at the end of a year! Memorising and reading a sheet of music is two different things; memorising simply needs more time to do so compared to reading off notes. Thus, I feel that your progress is most likely a fake, and a misleading progress video due to finger posture, reading of music and repertoire. Reading your comments also gave me another perspective as to the impacts you have caused on the people watching your video. In one of your top comments, a person commented "This guy gave me the inspiration to sell my piano.", and another user mentioned "this video destroyed my self confidence but thanks to these comments it got revived". I sincerely believe that this video is a very misleading one, as it clearly has had negative effects on the self-esteem of the people watching your video. I hope you can understand where I am coming from, and thank you.

i am sort of a half ass piano “prodigy” myself, i used to have piano lessons in 2018 and the teacher who has played all her life said she has never seen such a quick learner. i got about halfway through the first lesson book, then quit. i still kept playing but couldn’t read sheet music very well. i have recently come back to it and have been going through it very fast. my father, who has played all his life, gave the skill to me through genes and such. i started learning piano via synthesia in 2017 and i learned the first part of für elise as my very first song, and then i started trying hungarian rhapsody no2, which was an obvious no go because i couldn’t get past 25-30 seconds of it. after that, i made a mash up of a few different songs for my 6th grade talent show consisting of Toccata and Fugue by bach, für elise, moonlight sonata first mov, and a little bit of hungarian rhapsody. after that, i heard of a song called “la campnella” and i was hooked. i was able to learn up until the first 42 seconds, and then i had to stop because i had never trained my fingers to be that fast before hand. awhile after that, i slowly stopped playing at all. about a year ago i started learning waltz no. 19 by watching synthesia videos. after a few weeks, i fully learnt it, but then stopped playing again. coming back to piano about a month ago, i completely relearned it and started learning other songs and self teaching myself to read sheet music. coming from where he is (but on a smaller and less skilled scale) my guess is that the only reason why he learned so fast is because of genes through his mother or father or other close relatives.

@@capsulamental Of course we have no idea how many "takes" were needed for each performance and he would reject any that had serious flaws, but it's very difficult to assemble a single-camera video from multiple clips without leaving a visible tell-tale jump. In contrast, it's not difficult to do seamless audio editing of piano music; I used to do music editing (audio only) for figure skaters, and piano performances were always very easy to cut/splice. But there are plenty of minor "mistakes" in these videos, if you are familiar enough with the pieces to notice them. On the other hand, there is also the question of how well he plays during recording, versus no recording. If I'm recording my own piano piece, having the recorder running always results in many more mistakes - and some strange ones which I never make otherwise. Recording can be very stressful, but it's an important "reality check" for any musician.

@@inzwischen_inaktiv5078 Ill give you some perspective from a beginner (6 days as of now). I picked songs that I found emotional and powerful for me. I started learning movie songs that touched me as a kid, and some tunes from Ocarina of Time (Legend of Zelda). I have been happy with my progress and the way I will continue to motivate myself is to keep listening to music and to keep finding pieces that inspire me. I want to climb the ladder of emotional pieces until I feel good at piano. I like classical and will want to pursue more of it, but for now I am sticking with simpler things that are powerful to me. My advice, find music that inspires you, not just ones that sound good. A lot of classical music sounds good, but much of it doesn't inspire me like the songs I choose. That will come at a later time. I am self taught for now, and may invest in a teacher later to clean up some technique and get me on the straight and narrow. However, don't play a piece unless it means something to you. Eventually, you will find that every piece will emit an emotion in some way, at least for me. I have found that I appreciate the musicality of many more pieces now that I am starting to play. Thank you for reading this if you did. I just wanted to inspire you.

@@ethanperreault7470 Thank you for that comment. I've never seen it that way. Music doesn't often inspire me, it just sometimes triggers emotions. Chopin’s Fantasy Impromptu is beyond grade 8 and is often played for the performance diploma at ABRSM, for most pianists this would be 10 years with a brilliant teacher. To learn this in one years playing would require a prodigious talent that I certainly to not possess.

I think I understand why he says he's a beginner. I grew up with a piano in my house and can do a basic C scale, and play chords. I can play a basic version of Fur Elise and 'A Thousand Miles' by Vanessa Carlton because we were all obsessed with that song in 2003 and it looks impressive. But I can't read music. And around 'real' pianists I feel like a complete beginner because there is SO much more to the piano than knowing where middle C is and being able to play with both hands. Everyone's like 'he's not a beginner' but it's really the huge scope of piano playing that makes even people who are familiar with piano feel like total newbs.

I understand. I can play moderately difficult piano pieces (first song I ever learned to play was turkish March) but only through memorization and incorrect technique. So when people ask if I play piano, I always hesitate. I don't feel worthy to say I do :/ but I'm trying to learn more

Even though I get that you can learn songs before actually taking a piano lesson but after like 1-2 years of piano I actually started getting into both hands. But I do understand the feeling of being left out because even though I'm pretty good at piano my 4 years is nothing compared to the 7-9 years that my classmates have put in to the hobby. I'm in seventh grade and started in second grade a pretty good age to start and even though this is just turning out to be a rant I totally feel like I will never be as good at piano as anyone I'll meet who's played piano that I know. Even though I know I'll get there someday I still feel like I'm left out my classmates are over here playing starry night and I'm practicing beginners Disney songs. So even though I have experience I can sympathize with what you are saying.
