Since the year 2000, ring-tailed lemur populations on the island have dropped more than 95 percent. Rapid habitat loss, hunting, and the illegal pet trade have all contributed to the species’ dramatic decline. Looking to turn things around, a group of local people have banded together to protect their much-loved maki. Due to their hard work, the Anja Community Reserve now boasts the highest density of ring-tailed lemurs in the whole of the island. See the animals at play in their island oasis in this inspiring short film by Robin Hoskyns.

Did you know the Makis are one of over hundred species of lemurs in Madagascar?

  • @brittamoen9594

Maki is actually the generic official word for lemur in Malagasy! So Indri are maki, Sifaka are maki, etc.

I'm not sure how true that is, actually? Everything varies a lot with region, dialect, etc.! While in Madagascar, virtually none of the locals I met knew what a "maki" was. But, some would know "komba" (a name for common black lemurs), "babakoto" (the Malagasy name for the indri), "gidro" (a name for several types of brown and bamboo lemurs), and others. I'd be curious if there really IS a single term that is commonly known by people throughout Madagascar, though! But, I currently question whether "maki" is truly as universal as we had previously thought.
