ADOPTING PET RATS! || Plus cage set up

»DISCLAIMER
I have NO prior experience when it comes to caring for rats in specific, however, you have to start somewhere! And because I know I'm going to get a lot of comments on the matter of the wire cage hurting their feet, I'd like mention that is DOES now have fleece covering every level for their safety and comfort. I actually had the fleece during filming, it just wasn't cut so I couldn't add it in at the moment and I simply forgot to mention it while recording. Again, I am no pro rat caretaker, so if you plan on adopting rats I'd recommend researching even more information than what I have included in my video. That being said, I am aware that there many other important factors when it comes to caring for rats that I did not mention in the video, the reason being that this is NOT a "How to Care for Pet Rats" video, instead, it is simply of me adopting them. If any concerns arise, please understand that I have a passion for animals, as well as the wherewithal to make sure that they live a long, happy, and healthy life.

i would of recommended you did a lot more research before getting your rats since there are some things that need to be added. Though you are very right about using lava ledges to file down there nailes as well as dust within the bedding, there extremely delicate respiratory systems, the cage bars, needing more than one rat, rats liking to pee on rocks (btw i hope that rock is disinfected before you put it in there :) ) and finally that rats need to chew. Though there are defiantly some more things i would recommend. First of all i would recommend putting fleece of the levels and ladders of the cage since it will be a lot more comfortable for the rats to walk on. Rats cannot walk on anything wire to much over wise it can create a thing called bumble foot. Where the rats feet get incredibly sore. you can use binder clips to clip the fleece over the wire flooring so it stays more sturdy and so the rats cant get under it. Obviously rats chew though and will chew the fleece so it will have to be replaced every so often. As well as washed at least once a week when cleaning the whole cage out. I recommend hand washing the fleece and any hammocks so they dont shrink and or have any chemicals on them. You might already know this but rats cages need to be fully cleaned out every 1-2 weeks and spot cleaned more than that. Since you have females it may smell less because males pee a lot more. and rats are generally clean animals. but it still needs to be cleaned. Second of all i recommend getting a second water bottle, just so if your water bottle stops working for any reason the rats still have a water source, along with a ceramic bowl filled with fresh water. just in case both bottles stop working for an unknown reason and the rats have another water source, plus they can clean themselves using this water. i recommend your food bowls be ceramic as well so the rats cannot tip it over or chew it. as for food. since you didnt go over it in this video. i will briefly go over it for you but please continue to do research. for food young rats up until the age of 6+ months need more protein in there diet because they are growing un like adult rats. young rats need 18% to 20% protein in there overall diet. Adult rats only need 14% to 18%. please dont give them sead mixes since some rats are picky eaters and will pick out what they want and leave the rest. leaving out the vitamins they need. what you need it lab blocks. one of the best lab blocks out there for rats is a brand called "oxbow". i recommend feeding your babies with the adult oxbow lab blocks (since the baby rat oxbow food contains alfalfa which rats cant digest). as there main diet. since the adult food is aimed at adult rats it doesn't have enough protein for your babies. oxbow adult rat food contains 15% protein. and since babies need 18% to 20% you can supplement it with fresh fruit and veggies. if you are unsure of what rats can and cannot eat (fruit and veggies that is) then i recommend this youtube video ------------ kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZZOit6dpqcbgqLA.html And then this video for some basic information ----------- kzread.info/dash/bejne/pYZkk9KJeMWohLQ.html please do not give your baby rats a to high dose in protein or to low dose in protein because this can lead into hairloss, weight gain, weight loss, or tumours. third of all you need waaaaaaaaaaaay more in that cage. i recommend you have more hammocks, rats LOVE to sleep up high. As well as a sputnik which can be attached to the ceiling or as a hideaway on the ground. Rats adore clutter and the more they have in the cage the better, the more they can climb on the better. {{{{{{{{{{{{{{i also really recommend you get a bigger cage for them, it will do as they are babies but its best to get one as soon as possible, they are tiny now but rats get surprisingly big}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}} plus the bigger the better. A great cage to look at is the critter nation. its doors open up all the way like a wardrobe and a single one can hold up to 3-4 adult rats. since its a bit expensive though you can buy bird cages etc just always make sure the bar spacing is the correct size. and make sure you find one without the wire flooring. as well as proper ventilation. Even cages without the wire flooring though need to be covered up with fleece because its more comfortable for them. Another video for cages--------- kzread.info/dash/bejne/g5Oiyad8mKfansY.html you can also use baskets and zip-tie them to the cage or hang them from the top. all these things need extra fleece in. like blankets they can snuggle and sleep with, this will also encourage them to not chew the hammocks but the fleece on the hammock or baskets. there are also cube hammocks out there. You also need so many more toys. Foraging toys, chew toys, tubes, ladders, ropes, things to do. make sure the chew toys you get are a suitable wood and are not flavoured in any way. also avoid chew toys that contain alfalfa or sawdust or any sort of honey flavouring. you can just look on the ingredients for any of these. also a lot of plastic baby toys are suitable as toys. as they are made for babies and will not contain any toxins or things that will hurt your ratties. foraging toys help your rats contain there natural behaviours and will prevent further boredom. they have to work to get at there food and will also help them get exercise. also. since you have loose bedding at the bottom of your cage i recommend you scatter feed your rats, so there main diet. whether that be oxbow lab blocks or a different brand of lab block. which helps them look and dig around for there food. as for ropes you can use dog toy ropes and zip-tie them to the cage or you can use rat rope perches or rope bird perches. for tunnels you can use pvc pipes or rat/ferret tunnels. i really highly advice you to look at rat cage tours here on KZread to see what you can put in your cage/what you need/what is suitable. Some i recommend are ----------- kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZYdhyJaQpJarotI.html -------- kzread.info/dash/bejne/e51m3KOqj7rPY5s.html and ---------- kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y4uoyryAlNiaZ8o.html ------------------------ your rats also need lots and lots of hideaways!!! that box you have in there counts but they will chew that up pretty quick. hideaways encourage rats natural behaviours and they act as a "safe space". as well as nesting materiel in these hideaways. you can use just newspaper or shredded tissue paper etc. since you have 2 rats i recommend you have 3 hideaways. for everything you buy just think of how many rats you have, remember, the more the better. you can make your own toys to!! toilet roll tubes make great toys. for more on making free easy toys i recommend you watch this video -------------- kzread.info/dash/bejne/pneuy8-kkauTgpc.html or -------------- kzread.info/dash/bejne/o311po-GhMrFcaw.html ----------------------- thanks for reading this!!!!! i hope you have a wonderful day and i hope your rats are well and wonderful :)

Hi everyone! I originally came on here to give an update, but as I was reading the comments I noticed some of you have concerns that I would like to relieve. Starting off with the wire cage, it now has fleece covering every level so they don't hurt their feet! :) I actually had the fleece at the time of making the video, it just wasn't cut so I couldn't add it in quite yet and I forgot to mention that while recording because it is very important! I also bought them many many more toys so they are never bored. They are getting so big! Hopefully soon I will post a cage update video! Special thanks to @MadHatter for taking the time to make a comment filled with information, I really appreciate it!

There are plenty of pets that need new homes I was considering getting a pet and wanted to adopt rather than to leave animals homeless while people are breeding and selling more. One of my neighbors has been telling me about a cat who his friend's barber was trying to find a home for. He's my kitty now.

You should never, never, never buy rats from a pet store! They treat them cruelly and it is very, very, very bad. You should get them from an adoption centre, or at least a breeder.

Don’t use bedding that is coloured or scented. The scent is bad for this respiratory systems and the colour can be harmful if ingested or absorbed. You could safely use fleece or soft fabrics. Please only use non scented laundry detergent as well. Best of luck with your babies! 💕

Just some tips, do your research, try and buy from a breeder adoption centre, foster home ect around your area instead of a pet shop. Don't worry about the cage being too filled, rats are extremely intelligent and need lots of toys. Get a bird cage as they are quite big, rats obviously need a friend otherwise they get depressed... If you have a high cage make sure you have hammocks and soft things to catch them if they fall, make sure if you get them, that you leave them in the cage for 1-2 days for them to settle in. Also don't force them to do things, they will climb on you when they feel safe and trust you. If you also have levels, make sure to cover them with fleece, if you don't, the rats will get bumble foot. Rats are highly social animals, you need to be able to spend at least 5 hours with them a day. Hope this all helps :)

Rats shouldn’t be too expensive! Recommend buying from a breeder :) that way they’ve been handled since birth and have been socialized! Most breeders don’t breed to get money, just for the love of it, I spent 10 dollars and got all three of my boys!
