Adopting A Bluetick Coonhound From A Shelter

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

His Story:
His name is Trapper, he was found as a stray in South Carolina after getting mauled by another dog. A local rescue had him shipped up here and only lasted in the shelter for the minimum of 5 days to quarantine before I adopted him. He was sill recovering from his injuries when I got him and as you can tell in the video he had trouble scratching himself with his hind legs and limped. He was also about 20 pounds under weight so I spent several days nursing him back to full health. Every day I could see him making a little more progress until he finally started acting like a typical hound dog and could drag me through the woods when he got on a scent. Being a part of his recovery has been a very rewarding experience.

    I got a blue tick from a shelter too. Skin and bones so he ate too fast then threw up. Got a slow eater bowl and he put wt on fast. At first he was so scared and didn’t want us to pet him. Now a year later he is the goofiest and most loving dog ever. He is a big mamas boy and a big sweetie.

    I shouldn't be watching these videos on hounds. I lost my Tri-color coonhound Valentine 15 months ago. He was my shadow. I was going to get another coonhound, but then one of the two remaining small dogs we have went totally blind during the past 15 months. I went from N. Florida to the Boone NC Humane Society just before Valentine's day 2013 to get my boy. It was over a thousand mile round trip drive, but worth every whine & howl coming home. His name was Stoney at the shelter. Valentine was the perfect name for him considering the day. Our Tri-color hound before Valentine was Valentino with 2 large heart shapes on his side. Trapper is such a beautiful boy. I hope you are having a great time with Trapper. PJ

    That's a fine looking bluetick: houndy yet leggy. You ought to try to hunt him; it's a lot of fun--and, no, you don't have to kill anything. Just run him and let him howl. Blueticks, among all coonhound breeds, tend to have the best voices. Just remember, all dogs are goofy but hounds are extra goofy, so they are extra fun!

  • @ThatDudeVinny

    My goal is to hunt with him actually! I’ve been a lifelong pheasant hunter so I have more experience with bird dogs. This is my first hound but he has a stronger prey drive than any other dog I’ve ever seen. Currently on a waiting list with a trainer so we can channel that strong drive and help him focus.

  • @RowdyRory

    ThatDudeVinny You'll have fun. No offense to your bird dogs, but a good hound doesn't just fetch dead poultry. Even a coon is like a little bear, and cats (bobcats and lions) are a real kick. That blue dog of yours looks to me like he's out of good stock. And I'll bet you dollars to donuts he's got a better than decent voice-- deep and melodious. Wait and see what you feel like when you hear that bluetick open up on an old track on a crisp, clear fall night with a long drawn out mournful bawl. Very haunting. It will send a shiver down your spine and you'll be hooked. Good luck.

    Hi, I am looking to adopt a tan and black coonhound from a local shelter- we have a Lab but I am nervous about the "baying" in our neighborhood....how is Trapper's baying?

  • @ThatDudeVinny

    @ThatDudeVinny

    Жыл бұрын

    You should definitely check out my other videos if you are curious about baying. Coonhounds are loud dogs so they might not be the right choice for you if you are in an apartment or a place where you have to keep noise down. Trapper is the loudest dog I've ever met, he bays when hes happy/excited, when we have company come over, when I bring him places, and especially when we are out in the woods and he can smell animals. At the end of the day they were pretty much bred to make noise.

    Hey there; i'm thrilled about these gorgeous blue ticked dogs. Have anybody an idea, where's the different between the blue ticked coonhound and the " bleu de gasgone"?? Its because i live in europe and here you can buy this french blue ticked dogs easier than a coonhound; the look is quite the same. Greets

  • @wildthing3853

    Oook. I have find out that exist an American Blue Gascon Coonhound Asocciation too. These dogs ard a little bit longer tdlls the standard; but it's quite the same breed.

  • @ThatDudeVinny

    @ThatDudeVinny

    2 жыл бұрын

    Blue tick coonhounds are direct descendants of the grand bleu de gasgogne. In the early days of America the french settlers brought their gascogne hounds to Louisiana and crossed them with other hounds that were here to breed a dog that was good for tracking and treeing raccoons and other animals native to America. Grand bleu de gascogne's are larger and heavier than most blueticks. Trapper here is a definitely on the larger end of the spectrum for this breed and he could actually be one of the "American Gascon" hounds. The American Gascons are actually nicknamed "old-fashioned blueticks" because they kept more of the features from the old french gascognes. Since Trapper was found as a stray before he ended up in the dog shelter there's no way of knowing exactly what breed he is so I'll be getting a DNA test for him soon since the only thing that's for sure is that he is definitely a hound.

  • @ThatDudeVinny

    I wouldn't do any off leash stuff without a GPS collar because these dogs are controlled by their nose and will take off as soon as they get a scent but they are great for hiking. Check out some of my other vids with him we do a lot of hiking.

    I don’t think so…I have owned several neutered dogs and they all had prey drive and could hunt. It did cut their dog on dog aggression though which was nice.
