Adolescence of Utena - Dance of Utena and Anthy
The dance scene in the Revolutionary Girl Utena film Adolescence of Utena. Simply amazing.
I uploaded this to show the grandiose surreal design of the film, although I'm left with the bitter taste of uploading such disembodied scenes failing to convey their meaning without the context of the whole film (and series). Since around 2/3rds in the entire anime becomes just one giant pile of surreal, brilliant allegories while an instantly recognisable plot is devoured by a metaphorical firework.

Anthy's gesture of busting open the water pipe floods the floor with rosewater, and in its reflection we see a glimpse of what a revolutionized world would look like. Anthy and Utena not as agents being manupulated by men, but as women who are the champions of their own destinies and who CHOOSE to be together. They dance together as fully actualized women--actualized not in spite of but because of their love for each other. This scene is really remarkably beautiful and--dare I say it--revolutionary.
Ladies, find a woman who will dance on rose covered water with you
2. Trying to generalize Utena and Anthy's relationship as "bs" because it's not "true yuri" is pretty lame of you. One of the main points of Utena is that perfect fairytales and fairytale relationships don't exist, you just find whoever truly makes you happy. That's why Utena's boy outfit and their reflections of their "true selves" in the water are showing that they're both trying to be something that they're not. Red roses falling = abandonment of childish fantasies and acceptance of adulthood
Hands down one of the most romantic and beautiful scenes in all of anime.
Anthy's duty as the Rose Bride is to take care and tender to the roses of the garden. In this scene she deliberately lets them all fall away and off the platform. She is no longer doing the duty of the Rose Bride, she does not feel like she has to.
When Anthy strikes the pipe she is doing two things, first is not betraying Utena's trust on her after she allowed herself to be totally vulnerable and honest with her she does not attack her when Anthy could have struck her at any moment with her childish dreams, Touga's death or with that axe and by doing so water, which is often a reflection of acceptance on the movie, takes over the roses the symbol of the prince, the childhood ideals, and on that instant we see both of them connect free from the ideal of the prince, we see them trying to connect with eachother as Anthy fulfills Utena's dream to see the stars even if it is not the same as Touga promised her.
It’s so refreshing to see such an emotive Anthy.
Gosh... Steven Universe indeed took a lot of influence lol

Child: mum why is my sister called Rose?
The way Anthy brushes Utena's hair with her thumb melts my heart every time.
I really love how all of them are the opposite of themselves in the movie :
This scene is the closest I've ever seen something properly visualize what love is, or at least how I feel about it.

Utena and Anthy are perhaps my favorite lesbian couple in Japanese Animation.

If I ever get married, I’m having this song play when I dance with future spouse
The first time I saw this movie I was fortunate enough to see it in (the equivalent of) a theater, thanks to my college anime club. It was a large lecture hall equipped with a high quality projector and dual surround sound, making for an overall wonderful experience. Now, years later, I still maintain that this is one of my absolute favorite romance scenes in animated movies.
