Adobe Illustrator Tutorial - Object Expand Feature
www.mlwebco.com - In this video I demonstrate how to use the object expand feature in Adobe Illustrator to create outline (fill) shapes around your logo. A cool feature that you might use when creating logos.

it's midnight now and im still in the office struggling to finish my logo this way... thank you for posting this or I might spend a few hour to trace it out dang
So easy and EXACTLY what I was looking for - I love your no-nonsense, honest instructional style. Earned a subscriber, thank you so much!!!
I have been searching so long for a clear tutorial to do this. Thank you so much!
I have been working in a sign shop for the past couple years and really got comfortable with FlexiSign-Pro where you can just select the "Outline" feature to do this and just separate outline. So when I switched back to illustrator I was like ???? haha. Thanks so much! This helped alot!
Because I have the attention span of a goldfish I come back to your tutorial time and time again. Works every time. Thank you so much for sharing.
TOTALLY needed this tutorial for a similar logo project. Can't thank you enough, bro!
That you sooo much! I had struggled on a logo for a long time and your explanation was easy to follow.

Thanks! Very good and easy to follow tutorial.
just a question, after you expand the type ,you went again and unite it! what was the point of expanding, its like do something and redo it after that, can you explain please
This was a big help for me, thanks
Thanks, I couldn't remember what to do, and you helped me find it. :)
you save my life, thank you
Thanks mate, this helped me a lot.
Mike, you know what you are? YOU'RE GREAT! I myself have a Web Development & Branding company, and have learned a lot from your video's! Thanks!
The best thing to do is duplicate the fill in the appearance panel, then turn the bottom fill to the gradient colour and apply the offset effect to that fill too. This keeps the text editable and allows it to be used as a Graphic Style too.
What a great tutorial, thanks for this
Yeah, i use ITcrayon's method also. The 'offset path' option also allows you to round the corners and choose the miter limit, if you want.
Another great tutorial thanks! I am looking for an a to z of common photoshop techniques, the basic stuff that web designs would be expected to know so I can apply to certain offices with the required knowledge. Any advice or site's you know of?
Appreciate you a lot for this video 🙂 thanks!
Thank you my friend!
Another great tut!
nice video man, very helpful to me...
very helpful. Thank you!
Thanks, Mike, what's the font you used to type adly?
Thanks a lot. You saved my time :)
Awesome! Thank you!!
thank you , I learn a lot
Thank you worked for me.
Good job. Nice Tutorial.
great tut, thanks for sharing
Much appreciated!
Thanks that's very helpful ;)
Yes,The offset path method is much faster and better because you can set to offset the pixels and it will keep the same amount on re-size,plus the gradient color option still remains available.
Thank you, good tip!
Nice Tutorial.
Thanks for the tutorial
super cool
Thanks!
thx for this man
How to undo the expand.. Any solution rather ctr+z
Thanks bro!!!!
Can anyone tell me the font used in this video?
Thanks mate!
thanks for sharing
Whats the font used in this video?
I think you should use the Pathfinder. Simple click both the object/text and the photos then locate the Pathfinder then in Shape Modes Tab, click the Subtract from shape area icon
HELLO GOOD DAY. IM NEWBIE AND BEGINNER HERE IN ADOBE PHOTOSHOP. I LIKE YOUR TUTORIAL. I LEARN MORE LESSONS FROM YOU. I SUBSCRIBE YOUR CHANNEL. THANKS, GOD BLESS YOUR TUTORIAL
@mlwebco Hi, would you mind creating another tutorial about how to make icons that fits your logo?
thank so much
thank u very mutch!
thx Man !
The great thing with most creative software is there's many different ways to achieve the same thing.
When I get to the Pathfinder step, the little box w/icons looks the same but the "unite" button's name is "add to shape area". None of the 4 buttons in that row say unite.
i can't figure out how to message you on this mike, but could you explain to me how to do a border around the logo like it is on calistarclothing it is a website for a clothingbrand
What font is this? Can anyone tell me?
thanks
what font it that ?
Thanks!!! You save my joob !! I'm going to subscribe to your channel
HI MIKE THANK yOU VERY MUCH
I am glad they changed the interface..
which font this Sir..?
cheers dude
Dope!
Try this Quicker Method : make text create outlines,, copy n paste text on top and send to back.. go to object >> path >> ofset path and ofset by wotever you need to .. i usually use about 10 px ..
GOd damn it, in PS select where u need outline, goto select>modify>expand give your desired pixels done.
You can do this adobe PhotoShop aswell
Thanks. :)
what if your logo is a picture that you need to outline????
Hey buddy, this is a pretty obvious solution. (amazing end result none the less) but there has got to be a way to create a path around ur image a uniform distance away from the vector. A simple outline kind of floating around ur image. Of course you would be able to then fill it as you did. I'm still looking! This technique you used wouldn't work do well on let's say.. A complex character with many layers.
👍
Thanks Mike. Very helpful - and to the point. (And thanks for not putting on a dumbass music soundtrack :-) They drive me crazy) Cheers Rashad

:) ... I did this so long ago, forgot which font this was. If I find it, I'll post in the description.

+Mike Locke I too could not find the type of font. But O.K.
You could also just make a copy of the logo, remove the stroke, transform it to 110-125% in size, and throw it in the back. Slightly easier.

+Brian Soto The problem with that is when you transform the text the larger text actually would not line up with the original text. Unless, you somehow ungroup the text object and individually resize each letter...kind of a pain.
Remind me never to hire you to make a website in illustrator. ;)
That's my method too.
There's a much easier way. Just go to Object > Path > Offset Path.
That's why i prefer Inkscape than Ilustrator
haha he's doing it the beginner's way
Way too many steps, copy layer, paste to back, object, path, create offset, select preview is checked, adjust the size to preference, hit ok. With object still selected, unite in pathfinder, then expand appearance. Done. Much quicker than your method.

+Aaza Zazza or, or, you could probably just say, Great tutorial! Although I happened to find a simpler method: blablabla. Is it really that hard to be polite? Anyway, thanks for that simplified method.

+Irradiated44 I didn't happen to find anything, my way is much better than the "tutorial" presented, and didn't take 5 minutes to relay the message. If you happen to "feel" I was impolite, is not my concern, or do I really give a shit. I don't apologize for being more efficient, or working smarter. Funny how I've gotten 4 likes for my comment, (and no negatives, until you just now marked it,) but you still feel the need to whine like a little bitch.

Oh sure, people lost respect to each others these days. "Oh I'm smarter, richer, more resourceful in any way than you do, so you should DEAL with how I treat you!" Yeah!! Liberal! Ain't got respect for nobody.

Irradiated44 Hmmm, if I recall the order of events, you commented on this response first. If your delicate feelings are hurt so easily, why did you open your mouth to begin with, and comment on something that had absolutely nothing to do with you, at all? Typical socialist dumbass, getting involved in something that has nothing to do with themselves, but feel the need to be included in the conversation, regardless if anyone asked what their opinion was, or even care what their opinion is. SMH...
