Adlerian Therapy Role-Play - Push-Button Technique

This video features a counseling role-play in which the push-button technique from Adlerian therapy is used to help a client (played by an actress) understand how to exert influence over emotions using images and thoughts.

    I love this technique! I suffer from horrible anxiety and a lot of times I forget that I can control it. Dr. Grande explains to his client that the two parts of the push button technique. First you think of the negative thing that causes anxiety and second you think of a happy image. This technique teaches that we have a good deal of control over our emotions. I will definitely be using this technique in my personal and professional life.

    I used this technique with a client of mine and she loved it. My client struggles with anxiety and I decided to try this technique. The next session the client reported it as a useful tool when they were feeling anxious and the get back in control

    Used this video for an assignment in my Personality Theories and Counseling Models grad course. We had to analyze a video (either Psychoanalytic therapy or Alderian Therapy). This video helped me understand this technique a little more. It was well constructed and demonstrated very clearly. Thank you, Dr. Grande.

    I liked how he constantly checked in with the client to determine where she was in regards to her anxiety. I also enjoyed watching the client as she become more positive when she realized that she had more control over her anxiety then she first realized.

    This was a clear and concise demonstration of the push-button technique. Dr. Grande presented the technique in such a way that the "client" was able to immediately comprehend the end goal he was trying to achieve. This demonstrated the technique as a useful tool that can be presented early on to clients in counseling, and through practice, will help them feel as though they have more control over the negative thoughts and feelings. Because of the simplicity of the technique, it has great potential to use with children and adolescents as well.

    I enjoyed watching the client open up and gain a new prospective on her life. The technique that was used was helpful and helped the client with the anxiety that she was feeling.

    I like how Dr. Grande was able to utilize a technique that is helpful in many counseling strategies such as having the client scale her anxiety. I think it is useful to show how common techniques like scaling can be utilized in other techniques

    I liked this technique. Dr. Grande asked her to get a negative image what brought on anxiety then he asked her to think of something positive that made her happy and calm. In that short period of time the client realized that she can control her emotions by what images she thinks about. I also like the homework that Dr. Grande gave her. When she starts feeling anxious she can think about a positive image.

    Dr. Grande skillfully had the client identify her triggers and then problem solve. The benefit of this this technique is that it provides the client with a means of control.

    I actually really like this type of therapy. There are a lot of different techniques that can be useful throughout the counseling process. In this video he chose to use the push button technique which is very interesting. It was interesting how he made her face negative feelings attached to her fear of spiders. It teaches the client that they can create whatever feeling they want to just by deciding the subject. I really love his techniques.

    The push-button technique is something I feel I will definitely use in my career. This technique allows the client to have control over their emotions. When looking back at a negative experience, someone can experience anxiety. By switching focus onto a more positive experience, it helps to reduce the anxiety. I think in today's world, we have all experienced anxiety at some point. After watching this video, I think i will incorporate it into most, if not all counseling sessions.

    I can see how education and encouragement in the counseling session assist the client in making a positive change. This Push-button technique requires a brief overview, but is easy to implement. It seems that what is especially important is for the client to understand her power to determine a positive outcome (mood or emotion) by focusing on positive thoughts and images. As a grad student, the exercise is a good reminder that though a challenge is before me, there is also enjoyment in the journey. I think I will imagine walking across a stage.

    I found this technique to be something that could be used by anyone providing therapy regardless of their theoretical perspective. The push button technique does seem as though it could provide relief from anxiety. The session also seemed to be beneficial to the client by providing her with effective ways to help in managing her anxiety.

    It was obvious the negative images were giving her anxiety. Re framing the thoughts and turning them into something positive was a great way to reduce anxiety.

    I agree with you totally Joe Dirt. The negative images were giving her anxiety and the positive images made her happy and calm. Sounds like she has a way to deal with her anxiety. When she starts feeling down think of something positive.

    Watching this video gave me a better idea as to how to use this technique. It can work well with someone in a very anxiety-provoking situation. It prepares them with a scenario they can use in order to help calm them down. I think this would be a good technique for anyone since we all have situations that give us anxiety. We should all have that "calming place" we can go to.

    I like this technique I think it helps client's see that they have some control over their thoughts and the emotions associated with it. A conscious shift in your thinking when these negative thoughts arise can be helpful in many arenas of life.

    The role play video and push-button technique helped to emphasize how the client is in control of his or her emotions and reactions to experiences. It also shows how the client has the power to choose to focus on negative feelings or positive feelings, and practicing this can help improve the shift in focus. The push-button technique is also helpful to open the discussion on feelings or reactions, especially if clients have difficulty expressing themselves. I liked how the therapist assigned homework to the client related to a goal of practicing positive reactions and thinking in order to relieve anxiety.

    I like this technique and how the client was able to take a negative experience and a positive experience and focus on the positive images decreases her anxiety. She realized she was able to control the emotion. Push button.

    I agree that I like how the client learned how to take a negative experience and turn it into a positive thought. Additionally, I like how the positive was focused on more than the negative.

    I can see how refocusing on something positive can take away an individuals anxiety. As soon as she started to think of a happy thought she expressed how her anxiety went from a 5-6 to a 1. I can certainly understand how a positive thought can change an individuals mood. In that moment specifically. I'm sure though that applying this in a moment outside of the counseling session would be quite difficult. I'd be curious to see a follow up session with a client to see how the technique worked for them.

    Personally, I don’t see how this technique would work for a lot of clients, just because it takes a lot of awareness for the client to actively think about the situations while the negative emotions/anxiety kick in. Unless the client practice this technique for a long time, I don’t see this can happen spontaneously.

    This video demonstrates the possibility that positive images can help with reducing or changing negative feelings. I, however, thought that her description of how she felt when she saw a spider, "terrified" did not coincide with a moderate level of anxiety as she described when she actually imagined the experience during this session. I wondered if when she actually experiences a spider would her anxiety level be higher, like a 10, and if then, would she be able to use the positive image to reduce the anxiety. Is it necessary for the "range" to be similar with the positive image and negative image to be effective? Also, I noticed in the beginning of the video, the words of caution before starting the technique. I think helped the client to go to that negative place "safely".

    This two phase "Push Button Technique" is one that is almost to good to be true. It allows the client to take his/her negative encounters (imagery) that provoke strong emotional reactions, and in turn associate the negative with positive, happy images, and therefore happier emotional responses. This technique of control reinforces the reality that one has the power to alter thoughts (images), emotions, and behaviors. With practice, negative emotions associated with an image can be quickly turned into a pleasant emotional reaction. This technique appears to be one that could be taught to almost anyone. I will experiment with this technique personally.

    The push button technique allows the client to have more control over their emotions with taking negative associations and or images and replacing them with positive associations and or images. This is an interesting technique for someone with anxiety (as viewed in the example) to assist in a type of therapy to lessen the effects of the negative experiences a client may be going through.

    Virginia Murrey I agree that this technique can be very effective for clients suffering from anxiety disorders, and I also think the technique could possibly be a long term alternative to medications. Learning the ability to shift your attention to more positive feelings and memories can really make a difference in stress management.

    can I just mention something about your videos: the background noise is pretty distracting. If you could record the audio with clip on mics with some post editing would make the sound quality a million times better. The techniques and content are great, just hard to pay attention with that noise.

    I don't really see how this technique has potential to be effective in a real session. The client stated things would either make her anxious or calm and rated it but in real life the client may struggle to implement this technique.

    I thought that the counselor took appropriate precaution with using the push-button technique. The counselor asked the client to express her feelings and emotions in relation to seeing the spider. I felt like the counselor utilized attending behaviors to help build the therapeutic relationship with the client while she was sharing about her memories. I thought the push button technique proved to be helpful for the client

    I thought this technique was helpful. In this situation, the client was able to compare both the positive and negative experience and see that she actually does have control over her feelings of anxiety. She is able to be in control her influence over her emotions. The homework that he gave her will be helpful because now she is more aware of her control.
