Thanks for this , I was looking for your earlier videos as I got up this morning thinking I should try adjusting my come today while checking pattern and point of aim this afternoon. Temperature is going up to a balmy 15 C today.

Comb hight really important but a lot of shooters don’t practice gun mount i see clay shooters buy really expensive shot guns and when they mount it i think really and the next time I see them they have bought a nother shot gun because they didn’t get on with the last one but it’s thear gun mount at fault they don’t practice gun mounting at home gun mount is really important having shot isu skeet for 13 years keep up the really good videos more on compact sporting please 👍

I could add that the adjustment of the angle has the benefit of illiminating the face slap or under eye slap as well.

Really appreciate this video. My B725 ProTrap gives me nasty cheek slap half the time

It could also be the stock pitch causing muzzle jump (and cheek slap).

The gun's point of impact is determined by the manufacturers regulation of the barrel, and how it mounts to the shoulder. Moving the comb about won't make any difference to the point of impact. It will give you different sight pictures though (moving the comb) if you're patterning the gun. However raising the comb at the heel to produce a parallel comb will allow levelling of the shooter's eyes and a better cheek to comb fit, as you say, with rising birds. This suits trap shooters. Sporting clay and field users can find this a nuisance in mounting their guns with crossers, incomers, rabbits etc etc and prefer more stock angle with a lowered drop at the heel. As you say it's a matter of preference.

Manufacturers regulate the barrels so the patterns are not printing left or right. They also regulate the barrels so they center their shot a predetermined % above the line of sight. Depends upon the manufacturer or the customers requirements. Your shooting eye ( the one looking down the barrel ) is actually the rear sight of your firearm. Raising that eye will cause your shot to print higher than not raising your eye. The opposite is true,if you bury you head you are going to shoot low. Try this out when you pattern your gun. If your gun is well fitted to you, and you can obtain a constant and repeatable check weld, you should be fine. I do like a comb with a drop that is constant from toe to heel. If you are shooting any type of competition that requires a low gun starting point, a parallel comb will help in alleviating an error in mounting. And, if your a hunter that shoots in all types of weather (or a competitor that does the same) a parallel comb will give you the same sight picture if you have to adjust for added clothing.

@@charlessmith4242 I think the eye being the rear sight on a shotgun is another myth. On a rifle raising, or lowering, the rear sight requires the eye to line up two sights which are attached to the rifle. This requires a slight change in the mount into the shoulder. Such is not the case with a shotgun which has no fixed reference point on the buttstock, so your eye simply moves up or down, but in no relation to the way the gun points, or how it holds in the shoulder. The sight picture may change but the point of impact doesn't.

@@smithywess1 Charles is correct. Raising the comb absolutely causes the gun to shoot higher. It's simple geometry. And yes, your eye is the rear sight on a shotgun, so if your rear sight (eye) is physically higher it has the exact same effect as raising the rear site on a rifle.

I use a Winchester Select Energy 28” with adjustable comb. It fits me like a glove and I’m lucky that I shoot really well with it in every discipline. That being said, I’ve never shot trap. My question is, if I raise the comb will it become suitable for trapshooting? If I did a ‘before and after’ shoot on a pattern board would I see a difference in shot placement? Hope you can help!

28" would not be my barrel of choice for Trap, but if its point of aim is high enough then I am sure it will break Trap targets. What chokes do you have?

@@GoShooting Thank you for replying! It’s a multi-multi choke shotgun. I use modified and improved modified mainly. On skeet I change to more open chokes, when I remember!
