We all know, things we can’t see, scare us the most, well, let me reveal something hidden under the soil and it would do exactly the opposite, it would make you fall in love with this beautiful plant- Adenium all over again!
Hey Plant Lover, how are you doing! Now, let us talk about the feast I am going to serve you in detail, yes you, you can keep telling yourself Adeniums aren’t my thing but these plants are unique and no matter what, there would be a day you would have them under your care and if you already have a few Adeniums, you know exactly what I mean. This video will be interesting in so many ways- we will discuss how to raise an Adenium so that it develops a bigger, thicker, and wider caudex, how often you should water, when to repot, how to prune, what kind of fertilizer should be used, what kind of sun exposure is ideal, at what age you can start doing experiments with your Adenium, the best soil mix, how significant is the pot shape and size, and a whole lot of other interesting things. Let us start from the start, pulling out the Caudex from underneath the soil is EASY, difficult parts are before and after. Before- how do you make sure that when you pull the caudex out, the size is as big as expected and how you repot the plant after. If you miss a thing, during these before and after processes, the whole exercise would be a waste. So let is talk about before first-
➽ Cutting or seed- Adenium propagated from cuttings would give you better results in terms of caudex size, flowering, and most importantly the survival. Another interesting fact you should know, when grown from a cutting, most of the caudex will form under the soil and if grown from seed, expect it to be above the soil, of course when it's above the soil, it would take thrice the time to grow as big as it would have grown under the soil. So start an Adenium from a cutting and speed up these process
➽ Soil Mix- 50% Garden Soil + 50% Sand (any sand would do, but river sand, is the best)
➽ Sunlight- They would need at least 4-6 hours of sun every day, so please find a suitable place for them
➽ Pot size/ shape- Size, we can deal with later given they are too young right now. The shape, it's quite important- you need to have a round pot that tapers at the bottom- not a rectangular one or a square one. Also, quite important that you give each plant its own pot, too many in one pot would hamper the overall growth
Watering schedule- They like less water, so water once every 7-10 days
Fertilizer- Use any kind of fertilizer (organic/ inorganic), they love them all and can handle themselves well, just that add fertilizer during colder climate and in the evenings
Now once you have cared for them for at least 3 years and the care part would include pruning and repotting a couple of times, comes the reveal time.

Now you will have to start the ‘After’ process, watch closely and if you have further questions, please share them in the comments and we will have a discussion. Alright so let us begin the repotting.
Get rid of the soil as much as possible without harming or cutting any part of the caudex or roots.
Give it a thorough wash, this is to make the plant realize that this part now would be above the soil
Now I got to remove a bigger branch so that the plant’s weight can be adjusted. If I leave all these branches, the weight along with wind will topple the plant over, so you should also keep fewer branches. Another thing that would happen because of this pruning, would get more branches right in the middle of the plant for a fuller look, you will see later in the video how new branches come up. And the pruned part will give you another Adenium, if the branch you cut is 3 years old, consider the propagated plant to be already one and half years old, so there are so many reasons to do what I did here.
Select a pot that is just a few centimeters wider than the caudex, that’s how the plant will grow deeper roots to anchor itself better.
All you have to do is place the plant right at the top of the soil and a few gentle twists and turns will anchor it well. Water immediately and the plant stays in a shaded area until new leaves are all spread out.

I have an adenium bought from a big box store in the U. S. The caudex was above the soil. Left it there for a few years and had repotted in between with a deeper pot. Just recently, i went to repot and the caudex underneath the soil revealed an amazing caudex that looked like a womans body. I wish i could show you a photo or my video. Anyway i repotted it back into the pot, but put the caudex back in with one inch less dirt line. I want to maintain this shape. Should i revisit this and raise the caudex out of dirt even more?

If the caudex for my Adenium is slightly soft, does that mean root rot or dehydration? Thx for sharing such valuable information.

Yes, you guessed it right, seems like there isn't enough water stored inside. Though, nothing to worry about, it's normal for the caudex to be softer after a prune or during summers. Though excess water in the caudex does lead to root rot more often than not. The only way to find out if it's root rot would be to have a look-see inside the pot, just pull out the Adenium and check the roots well. How can you tell if an adenium is about to flower? I have an adenium arabicum and an adenium obesum. The arabicum is starting to get weird, reddish parts on the tips, and the tips seem to be swelling.

There a couple of tells if the said Adenium might be setting up for a bloom- ➽ Maturity, age more than 2.5 years (less if propagated from a cutting) ➽ New developments you noticed on one of your Adeniums say it is about to flower (sure, sometimes that can be the shade of new leaves whenever aggressive growth sets in however when you say tips appearing to be thicker, it has to be the bloom effect) If there is anything else, please let me know and we can have another discussion. First person to make bigger caudex from stem cuttings. But my stem cuttings always rot away
My plant is small just like when I bought it. Only thing is that it’s flowering. By the way I have mine planted outside

Looks like a great plant you have in your care, well done. Kudos 👍🙌😊 Adeniums are generally slow-growing plants and the most common problem is them not flowering regularly, yours doesn't have that too, so I believe you are good. I have a store bought adenium plant and the caudex is already outside the soil, can I bury it to make the caudex grow faster?

😊👍 Alright here's what I think you should do, but first, you need to factor in how the said Adenium was started- from seed or cutting. ➽ If it's grown from seed: The obvious sign would be Caudex growing above the soil and the plant would look complete without any visible wounds ➽ If it's grown from cutting: The obvious sign would be Caudex growing under the soil and the plant would have wounds and more branches than an average Adenium. If your plant is propagated from a cutting, sure, you can bury the whole Caudex in the soil however if it's grown from seed, please don't do that, there might be complications and it won't be good for the plant. My guess is the plant is grown from seed given the Caudex is growing out, still, you are the best judge here in determining which is which. As you live in dubai, is watering plant expensive? I mean water is expensive itself

Interesting question 😀👍💯 As a matter of fact, it's not expensive at all, at least the tap water 😊 a small household of 4 with a small garden, would cost anywhere between AED150- 200 for overall usage. Drinking water is somewhat expensive, a litre would cost you more than a litre of petrol or diesel. But then if you get bigger bottles, the cost comes down to AED 0.5 for a litre. So yeah, that's how it is here in Dubai, that seems to be the story everywhere; if not right now, in the near future then! Where are you based?

are you sure that the caudex grow up 3 times faster under the soil comparing to being above the soil? I have just heard that and shocked! 20 seedling I have now 1 month old, I will try. But will you prune the roots by time those doesnt seem beatiful?

Yes, I am sure about that 😊💯 Caudex will grow 3X faster under the soil! Well, I am here for a reason, and one of the main reasons is to share shocking yet helpful details 😉 and thereby saving you time and effort! 20 seedlings, well you deserve credit for starting so many of these cool plants. CONGRATULATIONS, I am happy for you! When you say seedlings, you mean you started them from seed, right, now you also say, I will try, well, naturally these seedlings will grow their Caudices above the soil, you cannot make them do this under the soil, if you do then there might be a few problems along the way. This can only happen if you start an Adenium from a cutting, and that's when the Caudex grows under the soil without any problem and after a few years, you can take the Caudex out and let it sit exposed in a pot. I aspire for healthy plants than beautiful plants because invariably plants are beautiful if they are healthy 😊💯 I will still maintain, I find this particular Adenium to be beautiful, though duly noted that you feel otherwise. No way I am pruning anything for 2 years or so. Just to give you a download of what I am planning with the Adenium in the video, it will flower for a few seasons and grow more roots sitting on top of the pot and when it does, I will dig it up again and make the new roots look like two or more legs for the plant, adding height and girth to the overall look. @@GauravChhikaraGardenDubai thank you for detailed answer. I think I misunderstood, i thought that seedlings's caudex will grow 3x times faster. Yes i bought 40 mixed variety seeds and started with 20 of them. If i can make them alive i will graft to each other and get a colourful plant. I knew that from cuttings, caudex will not existed. But i will try this also. By the way if you have watsup or telegram group about adeniums i will be appreciated to join that.

Wow, I like the sound of it, you got 40 mixed variety seeds and started 20 of them, this is grand and beautiful! I am just imagining the day when all these are in bloom, what a sight that would be AMAZING!! And then you plan to graft them, that would be epic, and would love to hear all about it when you are into the process maybe a couple years from now, so yes, please let me know how things are shaping up. A month or so, once you complete the processes, getting the caudex out and repotting the Adenium or starting an Adenium from a cutting. In both cases 3-4 weeks of watering every 4 days and then go back to offering these plants water once every 7-10 days, of course depending on a higher or lower temperature.
