Adding Screentones and Text to your Manga Pages | Visual Storytelling with Olschi Episode 12

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is a long one. Then again, it kinda contains 3 tutorials: how to scan your pages, how to apply screentones and how to letter. With digital art I found no better way to explain things but by just winging it when recording, no script. I keep rambling on when I don't have a script. I hope it didn't turn out too chaotic XD

    That was nice. I enjoyed all of it. Quite a long video, that's true, but very nice. Having read Another Me, now I suddenly know where Ilsoh's skin tone comes from. Or any skin tones! I never thought much about it. Crazy how much stuff is possible with creating hairstyles in Clip Studio, for example. I loved them example of Ilsoh looking to the door over her right shoulder. Now, I think I have look at the manga pages again and discover what you used.

    This is so cool. I can not imagine doing screentones the traditional way, that looks like sooo much work. Oo Doing it digital also seems like a lot of work, but working with an exacto knife seems like a pain in the butt, and I bet it hurts seeing the parts of the screentones you have to throw away. :( Now I finally know, that the weird effect certain patterns make on camera is called moiré effect ... I didn't know, that they also could appear in Manga, I've only seen them on video, and it's always uncomfortable. :D Also I love sound effects, *BÄM* and *WHOOOSH* are always good.

    I think traditional screentones are a matter of practice. I have seen some people apply them super quickly. But yeah, there is a lot of waste and it's quite meticulous work. Digital is so much quicker. Now that you mention it, videos do have that effect sometimes to. But i wonder whethe it's simply due to the sceen?

    @@olschis_art It's probably the old problem of practice makes perfect.😁 I am not sure why, but I've seen the effect a few times with checkered clothes.🤔

    Can I add bleed and trim margins digitially after scanning as I'm using A4 paper without drawing any margins? Please help.

    Yes, of course. You can just extend the canvas. If you "change canvas size" and make it bigger, the Programm adds white extensions to your canvas. Kinda hard to explain via text but if you Google the program you're using and "extend page" or "make page bigger" something should come up.

    You can also add panel frames digitally, so the drawings don't just end ubruptly.

    what would you save it as?

  • @concray

    @@olschis_art That was more an instinct, but i'm also coming at it less from an artist's pov, but more computer science. Bmp and png save every pixel that you scanned, Jpg kind of gives you the "ballpark". That makes the files smaller, but also loses information. You probably don't notice it most of the time. Or at all. But if it's something like source material i try to keep it as close to the original as possible.

  • @olschis_art

    @olschis_art

    @@concray Since the size of the original page is much bigger than the file will be in the end and since it's in black and white, as far as know nothing much gets lost if you safe the file as jpg. I don't scan it as bmp because that's where some lines get lost. I turn the file into bmp (usually since i use photoshop) later after I have cleaned up the page. If i were to scan a colored page then of course i would scan it differently but even then jpg is usually not a problem if the resolution is high enough, at least for my purposes. I'm sure in some cases it wouldn't work where you need much higher quality. But my pc wouldn't be able to handle those files anyways XD

    @@olschis_art well, i was just thinking down the line, once the paper originals have crumpled away and people will want to hang up your work in the museum in oversized canvases you will be glad you used the highest resolution... or something :D
