Adding Character with Board and Batten Wainscoting

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It took the greater part of a month all told, but we are so happy with how the (faux) panelling in the guest room turned out! Now we just need to acquire furniture. Speaking of, I didn't mention this in the video, but it's been nice to give ourselves time to live without a bunch of furniture in some spaces so we can really be thoughtful about what we add back in. We've learned that we enjoy having some extra space to stretch out, so we don't want to over do it and buy too many pieces too quickly and regret it.
**Of course, if you DIY this or any other project at home, be mindful about safety--especially if you live with children.**

    She LOVES her new scratchers! Well, more specifically, she loves the harvest of fresh catnip we're collecting from the plant outside and tossing into the scratcher box, but she spends a lot of time in there nonetheless.

    I've heard stories about how women forget the pain of childbirth when it's all over, which is kind of how I feel about this project. The footage reminds me that it was a lot of effort, but, now that it's all over, the sucky parts just melt into the background and I get to enjoy the result. Good luck if you decide to do it yourself! I think it's worth it.

    I would love to add trim to the master and living room eventually, but the hubs was ready to be done with trim for a while and it didn't really work out with our timeline to do more. We did paint the master though, so it feels sufficiently changed. When it's time to paint the living room down the road, I'd love to do something simple like a picture rail and maybe a color above it, but it's kind of complicated with the unframed archway between the living room and dining/kitchen, so that would also need to be solved at the same time.

    The squeaky pencil pained me too, but I left it there as a metaphor for tedious reality. My husband loves the laser level so much he plans to give it as a Christmas gift this year.

    There's now a twin sized day bed in the room, and we've left the table/desk that we made in college in there for now until we find something more appropriate. And a lamp. And the herringbone slipper chair that lived in the living room once upon a time. I'll likely share tiny updates like that on Insta stories and make a video once it's all done.

    Cats are great... 😸 It turned out nice. I really like the green. Apologies for going off-topic, but I've been watching your videos for a while now (love them, by the way), and I'm not sure if you're planning another Q&A video, but I'm curious about your thoughts on having kids. Coming from a childfree person, this is in _no way_ a, "When are you and your husband going to have kids?" question. I'm on the same page as Jenny Mustard in her "Why I Don't Want Kids" video. Of course, it's a very personal question, and I can understand if you don't want to talk about it. If you don't mind however, I think the idea of minimalism and having or not having kids would be an interesting topic for a video.

  • @VestedInterests

    @VestedInterests

    5 жыл бұрын

    No shade taken! I just scrolled through two years of Jenny Mustard videos to find it--I know I could have searched--but dang she covers a broad range of topics! You're not the first to ask, so I may get around to making a video on it, but, the short version of my answer is: I don't know/a lot of being a parent is not appealing to me/but also I'm kind of afraid of my own mortality and having a child is the only way to propagate myself and I'd also like to see what me and my husband are capable of producing--both in terms of mashing our DNA together and hopefully creating a cool person. But I don't want that yet, and there are a ton of other things I want to do before biting that bullet that are higher priority for me right now. I also have no hips, so the idea of pregnancy and childbirth is terrifying... Ultimately I think I've got about 5-7 years to actually want to have a child, and if it happens, cool, but if it doesn't, I can see myself having a fulfilling life anyway. (Plus, fertility isn't a guarantee, but that's a whole different can of worms.)

  • @VestedInterests

    Separately, it is fun to think about how I would approach raising kids as a minimalist though. How would I keep people from giving me stuff? Would I have a baby shower? Maybe, but no gifts. Can it just be a party? How could we raise a kid to not be materialistic without feeling deprived? Kids compare themselves to others all the time--at least I did a lot of that as a child--so thinking through how I would try to raise someone to not feel those pressures and make those mistakes is an interesting mental exercise.
