Adding 3D objects WITH SHADOWS in Davinci Resolve / Fusion

Adding 3D objects with shadows in Fusion isn't as obvious as one would assume. Watch this video to find out how.
Video I've made on how to mask subjects in your footage, so that the 3D objects are behind them:

*I did misspeak around the 7:44 mark. I said that we will eventually uncheck the lighting node, but not in the renderer. We, as shown in the video, do that in the shape node. Sorry for any confusion.

This is the best explanation of this concept that I have seen. Thank you so much. Waaay easier to understand what's happening than other videos I've watched. I appreciate that you aren't skipping steps and include just enough info about why youre doing something. Also no goofy joke intermissions. THANKS!

Very interesting! I'll be doing some 3D shadows on my next project so your video came in real handy and I'm looking forward to trying out your technique. You've got a new subscriber.

This was super clear and well presented. Now that I have studio key I will able to unlock camera tracker and give this technique a go. I can't imagine why 14 ppl gave this a down vote lol.

I tried following this video exactly, but can't get the spot light to actually cast shadows on the plane. I have shadows enabled in the view, on the spotlight and on the plane.

my guess are the dislikes are from the girl. It makes it a challenge to research techniques at work, on the job, when there is a girl in a bikini.

Excellent tutorial, thank you very much. The only problem is that the image is extremely distracting and I had to watch it about twenty times before I was able to concentrate. If you had zoomed in the camera tracking window it would have helped me to take my eyes off the beauty on the screen and also to be able to actually see something, because the letters were rather small even on full screen mode. For the rest, a great help.

Hey, thanks for this great tutorial! I'm having an annoying issue though. Basically when you change the rendere type from the camera tracker, from OpengGL to Software my shadows become ugly rectangles not matching the letters at all. The real problem is that with OpengGL i get perfect shadows but as soon as i try to change the font or go to edit page for playback, Davinci will eventually crash. Anybody can relate or might help me out?

Unfortunately, not that I'm aware of. At least not in a 3D space. There are other techniques if you search around KZread but it involves duplicating nodes and many more steps.

@@PostColorGear Hi, one way I have found is as follows: 1. Create a pure white plane to act as shadow catcher 2. Add a spotlight and create a shadow on the white plane. 3. Set the cameraTracker render node to 'Software' (not OpenGL) and activate lights & shadows 3. Set the Blending mode of the plane to 'Multiply' and reduce the gain until the plane disappears. Note: it might be necessary to increase the density of the shadows and play with the light intensity to find a perfect shadow (with no plane remaining) I am not saying this better, it's an alternative that worked for me. Also, if you must use OpenGL, leave the blend as Additive but play with the Opacity and Alpha of the plane and you can get away with a fainter shadow. Here you will definitely need to increase the density of the shadow in the spotlight setting. maybe Blackmagic will add a shadow catcher and all this will be unnecessary :)

First of all amazing tutorial! Thanks! Second i ran into some issues. I did all the steps on my first clip and everything worked fine but when i tried the same thing on the second clip i want to use camera tracker it just doesn't start tracking. When i try deleting the node the program asks me if i want to stop the render process and it won't let me do that. After this message Davinci just shuts down. Any idea how to solve this issue?

Unfortunately no, I'm sorry. I would ask someone over on the Blackmagic forums. Hopefully they can help!

Will this work with a chroma keyed person instead of the text? I need to create a shadow of that person in my final composition.

I don't need any tracker since my subject is not moving around the space. Just a cohesive shadow that mimics the arms and body movement.

I don't think I mentioned it was free. If I did, I apologize. If I didn't, it was just your assumption. I always recommend getting the studio version anyway, for that reason, among many. 1 time payment, free upgrades, added features.
