Add or Replace: 4Runner Daylight Sensor (5th Gen: 2014-2024)

The fifth generation Toyota 4Runner is sometimes built with automatic headlights, and those models come equipped with a daylight sensor which also gives the dashboard gauges and screen the ability to switch between day and night mode based on light levels instead of changing based on if the headlights are on or off. On 4Runners without the automatic headlights (which is a surprisingly high number of trim levels) and there is a blank space for a sensor with a plug already wired up, ready to plug into the sensor. A fair bit of research has lead me to the conclusion that the only models pre-wired for this sensor are the SR5 Premium, the TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, and Limited. In other words, it will be the models with the upgraded infotainment system, but the Pro and Limited models already have the sensor installed from the factory so they won’t benefit/change from this mod. If you have either variety of Premium models, this video shows you how to add the sensor, but it can also be followed as-is for a daylight sensor replacement on the TRD Pro or other models that already have a daylight sensor installed. This is one of the easiest Toyota 4Runner 5th Gen mods out there!
Please note that different model years use different sensor part numbers! At the time of this recording, the sensor for the 2020/2021 4Runner is more expensive than the ones found on previous model years, but they are not compatible with each other. There are multiple listings for each part number on Amazon, so you should be able to buy whichever one is the least expensive for your particular year range, as noted below.
2020, 2021, and 2022 used the part number 89121-0E060, which replaced 89121-F4010 and 89121-30020. These light base plug sensors have three pins, but in a four pin layout that has one absent pin. autoparts.toyota.com/products...

The exact listing I bought from for my 2021 4Runner TRD Off Road: amzn.to/3UoFv16 *
The 2014-2019 model years used part number 89121-06020, which replaced 89121-50020. This dark base plug has six pins in a 2x3 configuration. autoparts.toyota.com/products...

I am still looking for information on the 2023 and 2024 model years.
Generally these parts are all made in China, likely the same factory, and the brands posted on Amazon don't actually mean anything, and are just there to create a different listing instead of offering a competing price on an existing listing. When shopping for the lowest price, watch out for shipping charges, and the "coupon" feature may alter which price is actually the lowest.

Fourth GEN Prius also doesn’t have automatic headlights. I will check if there is a sensor blank somewhere in the dash but just curious if you happen to know anything about the Prius fourth General runs something like 2015 and 2022

That's a generation I haven't so much as opened the door of, but that year range seems promising for having the potential for one of these. Definitely worth checking out forums!

So this doesn't make your headlights come on automatically in the dark or off in the light?

It does not add any automatic headlight functionality, but I'm currently looking into the possibility of adding that.
