You still can access all the cameras through the NVR. As long as you set the password for both cameras and the NVR. I think there is no much difference regarding the security. Creating a subnet can avoid the IP conflict since the cameras will have different subnet. However, it did create one possible issue, the NVR can't see the IP cameras from the local network. If you have one camera which you can't bring the cable to the NVR, and you can't leverage the network topology.

The number of channels on the NVR dictates the maximum number of cameras it can support. Connecting it to an 8-port switch won't expand this capacity; it will still show a maximum of 4 cameras.

Reolink's support for cameras connected through external switches or routers, especially non-Reolink devices, can be limited and might not always work as expected. While Reolink NVRs are generally compatible with Reolink cameras, there could be limitations or specific requirements when adding cameras through a PoE switch, especially if the cameras are from a different manufacturer. Ensure all devices are compatible and that you're aware of any limitations. Ensure that the cameras connected through the PoE switch are on the same IP network as the NVR.

Great video! Currently I have 3 IP-cameras connected wirelessly to my NVR and now I want to add 2 cameras placed appr. 100 m away from the NVR. These new cameras will be PoE-cameras powered from a PoE-switch, which in turn will have internet access through fiber from my router. Question: Should the NVR be placed between the router and the PoE-switch ( Router -- NVR -- (fiber) -- PoE-swith -- Camera ) or can both the NVR and the PoE-switch be connected to each other through the router ( NVR -- Router -- (fiber) -- PoE-switch) ? This is very helpful and I just have one question. In my home, I saw 6 IPCs cables connected with POE switch, which then 6 cables connected between the POE switch and the NVR. Would only be one cable connecting NVR and the POE switch?

Thanks for the video. I have a scenario here; connected 9 cameras on 3 separate POE switches which are basically connected to the OFFICE LAN. On top of that I have POE NVR on another Building connected with 8 ip cameras on its ports. I can view these 8 cameras connected directly on the NVR but fail to view those on the LAN though the NVR is connected to the LAN. What settings should I change to enable me to view both cameras; on the LAN and those connected on the NVR ports directly.

I think the PoE NVR has created a private subnet to take in the cameras from those POE ports. Meanwhile the NVR the public subnet to talk to the LAN. That is why the cameras in the LAN can't reach the NVR, because there are two different subnets in the NVR. You can get the cameras from the LAN into the private subnet of your NVR. You might need another NVR to take in the cameras from the LAN.

Thanks for your informative vids, question, I plugged 4 cameras into a 8 port switch then took one poe cable to my nvr powered everything up and got nothing on my connected monitor, what am I doing wrong

You can run a quick test. Remove 4 cameras on the 8. ports PoE switch and see whether you can see the video from the one last camera. Just remember you probably need to configure the NVR to link that camera.

No, the NVR is usually powered through its own power supply, not via PoE from the switch. In this video, we're trying to connect it to a larger network via a PoE port on an external PoE switch to connect more cameras. The switch will not supply power if it's not requested by the device. The connection primarily serves for data communication. Actually, you can connect the switch directly to a RJ45 Ethernet port on the NVR.

Question: is it possible to connect the Poe switch to the router via uplink cable and then connect directly to the switch both the cameras and the NVR?

Thank you for the information here and the guidance. I implemented your design but the HDMI output from the NVR directly to my 4K TV would not update taking anywhere from 10 seconds to over 2 minutes per frame. The only thing that seems to work is to connect the PoE Switch's uplink port directly into the NVR - that's the only difference from your design. Now the system is working. Would you happen to know why this works or why I could do it exactly the way you did? Thank you.

I have two buildings: my house and garage, not too far apart. Currently, I have a single Ethernet cable running from my house to the garage. Now, I want to install eight IP cameras in my garage, but I don't want to run separate Ethernet cables from my house to each individual camera in the garage. My plan is to use a POE switch in the garage. This PoE switch would power and connect all eight cameras. Then, I'll connect this garage PoE switch to another switch I have in my house. This house switch is connected to my XVR. So, essentially, I'd have all eight garage cameras connected to a PoE switch in the garage, and that switch will connect to another switch in my house, which in turn connects to my XVR. Do you see any issues with this plan? Thanks you.

No, there is no issue with your design. I assume the AC power source is ready at the garage. Otherwise, you can consider the PoE powered switch and send the power from your house.

What if you still have no internet connection, but you want to test if the camera is working. Is the camera still works if you just connect it to the nvr through the monitor connected by hdmi?

Yes, you can still test the camera's functionality by connecting it directly to an NVR. Check the camera feed for any issues, such as a clear or distorted image. If the camera has pan, tilt, and zoom (PTZ) functionality, test these features through the NVR's interface. But please keep in mind that this method is primarily for testing the camera within your local surveillance system. To access the camera remotely, you will need an internet connection.

I have 5 tp-link tapo cameras (c520ws and c540w) which are not poe capable. Can I use a poe switch and a poe splitter for it to work instead of plugging the cameras one by one to an electrical outlet?

You need to double-check all physical connections, including Ethernet cables, to ensure they are properly seated and connected to the correct ports on the switch. Verify that the power source for the switch (PoE or external power supply) is functioning correctly. And you can disconnect the new switch from the network and see if the existing network returns to normal. This will help determine if the issue is related to the new switch or not.

Here is my scenario. I have two buildings that are separated by 30 feet of distance. One building has four cameras and a ethernet cable running underground to Building B which is the main building. The main building has four cameras. We now want to switch to a poe system. We are thinking we get an 8 PORT p o e switch for Building B and an 8-port poe switch for main building + NVR IN MAIN BLDG.. ethernet cable running from Building B to building A would connect the two POE switches. Is there anything we are missing or will this setup work. thank you for your time

It's a simple process to add a wireless network bridge between the two buildings especially since its a short distance. I use a UeeVii 5.8ghz between my workshop and House which is about 25m and it works very well. 8 port POE on the shed side which I run 3 cameras and my LAN still moves along nicely. Got mine in Australia for around $100 AUS . Very simple set up.

Since the Ethernet cable is existed, yes, you can set PoE switch both building and leave the NVR at the main building. The cameras in another building can return to the NVR. What you think of is correct. You have everything you need.

Hi, i have 6 cameras POE onvif connected to a POE switch, from the POE switch connected to the LAN port of the Hikvision NVR, when I connect the POE switch to one of the inputs of the 8 available ports, I do not get an image, does my NVR not support that connection? It seems like your Hikvision NVR might not support automatic recognition of the cameras. Try manually adding the cameras in the NVR's settings using their IP addresses to see if that resolves the issue. Good luck with your setup!

A1: some NVRs are vendor-specific. If you’re unsure about the compatibility, you can contact the manufacturers or refer to the specs. If they're ONVIF-compatible, that should be fine. A2: That depends on the capacity of your NVR. If it can handle 8 channels, then you can view 8 cameras simultaneously. However, if it only has 4 channels, it's limited to connecting and recording four cameras at any one time.

The number of channels on an NVR indicates how many cameras it can record simultaneously. If your NVR is a 4-channel NVR, it can handle and record video feeds from up to 4 IP cameras. The NVR in this video can handle more than 4 cameras. If you want to run 12 cameras simultaneously, you’ll need an NVR that supports at least 12 channels.

However, if your current NVR is at its capacity, consider upgrading to a larger model that supports more cameras or add an additional NVR. You can consider implementing VMS that can handle inputs from multiple NVRs or directly from IP cameras. VMS solutions can be more powerful and offer advanced features like analytics and remote access. For some scenarios, especially where on-premise hardware expansion is limited, consider cloud-based video recording solutions.

Hi, here is my scenario, I have 4ch PoE NVR and 4 IP cameras. 2 of my IP cameras are near to the PoE NVR, so basically, I connected that 2 IP cameras directly to the PoE NVR. However, the other 2 IP cameras are far from the PoE NVR, so I decided to connect that 2 IP cameras to a PoE switch and then, that PoE Switch will be directly connected to the PoE NVR. Do you think that the 2 IP Cameras which is far away will be detected by the NVR? Do you think there will be a problem with this scenario? Thank you for your time.

Connecting two IP cameras directly to the PoE NVR and the other two through a PoE switch should work fine. Just ensure the PoE switch supports the required power and bandwidth for all cameras. Distance shouldn't be an issue if you're within the network's limits(328ft max.).

If you have more cameras than the NVR can support directly or you need to position cameras in locations far from the NVR, an external PoE switch can be used. You can connect some cameras directly to the NVR (if available ports) and others to the PoE switch. The PoE switch will need to be connected to the NVR (usually via one of its LAN ports) to transmit data from the cameras connected to the switch. When using an external PoE switch, ensure that the uplink to the NVR can handle the bandwidth generated by the connected cameras, especially if you're using high-resolution cameras. The NVR's network interface (where the switch is connected) must support enough throughput to avoid bottlenecks.

The number of channels an NVR can support is usually fixed by its physical hardware specifications but you can add more cameras if your NVR supports using a PoE switch for additional cameras. The PoE switch is onvif-compatible. If you need to connect more PoE cameras than the NVR can directly support, a PoE switch can be used to provide both power and data connectivity to additional cameras. However, the total number cannot exceed the NVR’s channel capacity. For example, if an NVR is described as an 8-channel NVR, it can handle up to 8 cameras, regardless of how many network ports it has or how many cameras the connected network can support.

A subnet is a segment of an IP network where all devices share the same IP address prefix. Different subnets isolate traffic and devices, while the same subnet allows direct communication between devices. PoE Ports and LAN Port on the Same Subnet: All devices, including the NVR, IP cameras, and any other devices on the local network, share the same IP address range (e.g., 192.168.1.x). Devices can communicate directly with each other without needing additional routing. Remote access to both the NVR and cameras is simpler since they are on the same network. PoE Ports on a Different Subnet from the LAN Port: The NVR creates an isolated subnet for the IP cameras connected to its PoE ports (e.g., 192.168.2.x), while the LAN port is on the primary network (e.g., 192.168.1.x). Camera traffic is isolated from the rest of the network, which can improve security and reduce network congestion.

8:17 seriously? Your way to verify if the devices are compatible is to blindly buy a camera that may or may not work with your existing system? How about a way to find the information before you buy the cameras? And why did you only connect 3 cameras? Your nvr has 4 ports do that mean the nvr cannot have additional cameras added ti expand the nvr from 4 cameras to 10 by using that switch you have? Thanks

You might need check whether both cameras and the NVRs are Onvif compatible. If both cameras and the NVR support Onvif, you have a good chance it works with each other.
