It’s interesting swing Vincent and Quincy’s relationship transform throughout the musical. At the beginning Quincy was the more dominant personality in the relationship, having set goals and expectations for himself. Sure Quincy loved Vincent, but the academic mind was still driven by the need to succeed. At the second act we can see how Quincy’s love for Vincent completely overtakes their previous roles and makes him do anything for the biologist. Quincy becomes the one shouldering all the burdens between them to the point of self harm and worsening hallucinations.

Shoutout to the random Phaethon nominee at 7:54 who, while everyone else is explaining their projects, says “I don’t know! Do you have any ideas?” That’s an entire mood.

This is so fantastic and I haven't even watched through the full video yet. I'm so goddamned inspired. The fact that as students you were able to conceive and more importantly execute something so grand, so fantastic, so brave, so beautiful SO EVERYTHING is magical to me. I'm halfway through my school year as an acting major at a state school in Nebraska. It is my dream to be able to do what you did here; write something beautiful and do it. God, it's so amazing you did this and it happened and I'm proud of you but I don't know you and I don't know what else to say but thank you. Thank you for creating, for doing. You are laying the foundation of this generation of theatre and I pray to whatever's out there that you find so much success in the arts.

This is absolutely amazing! I love everything about this show, especially the exploration of the challenges Beatrix and Vincent face. I've also learned something new about saints and I think it's really cool how they have been used here. Thank you for creating Adamandi, it has been on my brain for about a week now and I suspect it will continue to stay there for the foreseeable future.

@@melliotwrites I've been wondering for a while, why exactly did Quincy stab Vincent? I can think of a few explanations, but if you don't mind sharing your thoughts, I'd like to know what his canon motives were.

@@TAEVSBLVE (Mel here because I wrote most of the Quincy storyline, esp the Catholicism/love stuff!) [Spoilers obviously] . . . . . . . . . . . It is very much open for interpretation/part of what the actors get to make choices about, but if you're interested in a writer's two cents, the intention behind the stabbing is more or less the extreme conclusion of the ideas introduced in I Hate And I Love/Litany of the Martyrs. With the show in general, we really wanted to talk about the toxic attitude towards independence and interdependence that can exist in highly competitive schools: the idea that everyone must succeed devoid of help from others, that the "truly" brilliant must be set apart to "prove" their worth, and that relying on someone else makes you weak and less successful (this is the idea behind the repetition that "only ONE student may be awarded the Phaethon Prize in any given year"- the school is structured so that interdependence is the antithesis of its values). Remember, directly prior to this scene is the scene where Quincy talks to the Administration, and they tell them that Vincent is intentionally holding them back from achieving the prize. They refuse to run away with Vincent because they're afraid of relying on him too much ("IF YOU LEFT ME/I'D BE NOBODY"); they still want that unhealthy self-determinism they had at the start of the show. This is all on Quincy's mind when they enter the roof, along with the (correct) suspicion that Vincent is about to commit suicide ("Someone said there was a guy standing on the roof of Stutton hall..."). So, the moment before the stabbing. From I Hate and I Love, we know Quincy feels that he has dissolved into Vincent; that falling in love with Vincent has erased his ambition, and he isn't succeeding at his schoolwork/project (which is integral to his self-worth, i.e. Perfect At School) because Vincent is now the source of his happiness. It's partially an final act of self-harm ("IF YOUR EYE IS WHAT CAUSES YOUR SIN/PLUCK IT BEFORE YOUR DEMISE"); Quincy views himself and Vincent as one person, so killing Vincent means Quincy is killing the part of himself that he despises. The Saints leave afterwards because they have accomplished their goal; as a representation of Quincy's Catholic guilt, they've been driving him towards cutting Vincent away this whole time (because Vincent is gay, because he's a sinner/murderer, because he represents Quincy's queerness... etc), and once Vincent is dead they have succeeded. And, on a human level, it is ultimately selfish: Quincy has always underestimated Vincent, and is comfortable with that role in their relationship. Confirmation that Vincent is surpassing them in a self-relevant domain tips them over the edge, not because they think that killing Vincent will earn them the prize, but because they can't square their continued existence with Vincent, in particular, recieving it. Vincent's name being read out is (to them) the death knell of the Quincy who sings 'Perfect at School': an incontrovertible confirmation that they have lost their former self to Vincent. This scene used to end with Quincy saying "Just leave me here. There's nothing left. I thought I'd feel better, but there's just... nothing..." which was cut for being Very Dramatic but gets at this theme more clearly: Quincy thinks they are cutting away the part of themself that Vincent represents, only to discover that there is not some secret, "uncorrupted" Quincy inside them that Vincent's presence was compromising: who they were with him was who they really were, and after killing him they have not uncovered their former selfhood but have instead lost all sense of self. Buuut I also have seen a lot of good interpretations of this moment and don't want to quell theorization! Some of my favorite alternate readings are that because Quincy is taking on more of Vincent's characteristics, the last act they commit in the relationship is murdering someone (i.e. the only time they harm someone else instead of themself), or that they are martyring Vincent, at the behest of the Saints (and therefore think that they are actually doing him a favor/granting him the notoriety he craves in Oh, Ms. Reporter.) They are all good readings of it and it's been cool to see what people thought! Thank you for asking and I hope this answers the question! :)

@@melliotwrites Thank you for your reply! This insight really helped. While I did hit upon Quincy's ideal of independence, I also initially thought Quincy was doing a mercy killing as Vincent (arguably) did to Ambrose, or otherwise had a 'righteous' motive (killing a killer) but it didn't quite add up. The 'martyring' interpretation is very interesting, and if we follow the vein of the other martyrs, Vincent could be Quincy's personal patron saint, preserving someone he loves in a way he understands but that haunts him all the same. Speaking of Vincent, I think it's a great (and tragic) detail how he appears to be content with Quincy's love (if secretly resigned about his own abilities), but the moment he has an in (i.e. murder) he pursues it relentlessly, showing that even the nominee seemingly least concerned with the competition (of the main five characters) eventually succumbs to it. P.S. I love the Marmorius back-up dancers!

psst if you want more musicals with queer characters, starkid is amazing about that their stuff is up on youtube for free! and most of them are professionally shot and fully captioned firebringer specifically has a lesbian enemies to lovers, nightmare time (this one is a series) has a nonbinary character and a lesbian couple as a couple of the main characters, and various ones of their other shows have VERY queer-coded characters and storylines, like in a very potter musical with voldemort and quirrel, in trail to oregon with mcdoon and cletus, and in holy musical b@man with batman and robin. (sorry i just really like starkid and wanted to make you aware of more musicals with queer characters)
