I say 'learn' because I never actually went down that road in the end. It made me more and more angry at the crappy system. He should also mention how people also have different rhythms. I still can't go to sleep until 10 or 11. And get up at 6. And I'm 32 now. But I just don't get tired until 9 or 10.

Well, the phones do have something to do with it. As said in the video, teens don't go to sleep until probably 11-12, but many are still awake by 3-4. *That's* not the fault of scheduling, that is the fault of teens aimlessly searching the interwebs and talking with each other at a time when they should be asleep.

Those were the worst days, and I'd often simply skip the morning class unless it was a test day (i.e. two days in the entire semester). Here’s an idea 1) Get as many students as possible to agree on a date 2) when the date comes, walk around the school, don’t go to class, and when asked why, tell them you’re protesting the early start times 3) do it repeatedly It’ll look bad on the school’s record, so either they’ll have to tank a budget cut or start later. If they get the budget cut, keep going eventually they can’t take anymore budget cuts and will have to listen to your demands. 4) Try to get it on the news to show it’s possible Eventually and hopefully the rest of the nation will follow, students across the nation, and maybe even the world will see what you did, and see it’s possible, and try it

Some people really do just have different rhythms, but if we're talking typical you're correct, 7-8 hours is the norm but the full gambit is 4-10 hours for healthy sleep depending on the person.

Can they do a segment on the disability system in the US? Its widely accepted that you will be denied several times before maybe actually looking at your case, all while you are homeless for YEARS. If you have chronic pain, they will try to act like you are just a druggy. This is what is happening to my mom. It has been 4 years. There is no amount of "reasonable accommodation" an employer can provide for her to make her employable.

  • @UnicornsPoopRainbows

It is a complete joke. You NEED to hire a lawyer (who will take a chunk of your lump back pay) and find one that actually does their job. If they only look at your case the day you are in front of a judge, chances are you are getting denied. My sister had a lawyer try to argue her celiac disease was a voluntary life style diet choice 🙄🙄 Imagine having a coworker that is in the bathroom all day because you sneezed in their direction while eating a muffin. Very employable. My mom got it the first try (cancer and chronic pain/side effects) because the doctor knew the vocab (buzzwords) to use for her case. It turns out that the people approving and denying claims HAVE ZERO MEDICAL BACKGROUND!! They are literally looking for key words and phrases. So your doc has to write so an idiot can understand the condition. We need a system overhaul. Maybe cut the military's helicopter budget a bit, we don't need so many tanks...

People tend to overlook the elementary side of this, but it affects them, too. Starting later means ending later means you need to get them to 3:30 or later when kindergartners are just DONE long before that, and even fifth graders fade by 3:00. My district moved elementary kids to the earlier start time and middle/high school later and it's not nearly so much of a battle to get my students to 2:25. But yes, the real problem is money for buses.

Most places don’t have full day kindergarten, which is another problem in itself. So teachers have three hours instead of six to teach what they need to, plus it’s antsy kindergarteners so it can’t be go go go for three hours straight. And if you make them really unhappy, that will just slow you down more.

I don’t even exactly understand the bus problem (please explain I’d love it) because if the bus schedules are spaced out by grade by an hour or so, they should be able to just reuse them (example: five main bus routes highlighting the five main areas of town. Five buses go out in the morning for little kids, bring them to school and then go on a very similar route for middle school. Rinse and repeat to get the highschoolers in, five buses used for fifteen trips)

  • @brontesaurusrex7235

    5 жыл бұрын

@@durdleduc8520 By that last line I mostly meant that it's true districts don't put much money into transportation (and not infrequently they just can't put more into transportation). This extends into drivers being severely underpaid, which leads to shortages. Whatever wiggle room can be scraped out will be scraped out. As few buses as possible run at a time. Sounds efficient. But there are problems with creating schedules like that. Families that have children at different levels of school have to do all sorts of juggling acts to make sure everyone gets to school on time and that younger kids have someone to watch them while also getting parents to work. Field trips that rely on school buses for transportation can be limited by routes that driver needs to do, so that the trip ends up planned partly around schedules that have nothing to do with your school (which yes may sound frivolous but good field trips really are part of quality education). But most important and most devastating, the most vulnerable students can be left behind entirely by transportation cheapness, a situation this article can explain better than I can in a KZread comment: www.kuow.org/stories/as-school-bus-service-improves-seattle-special-education-students-may-be-left-behind

Umi Ryuuzaki Thank you for showing me this! I was a bit worried I’d get a passive-aggressive response but this actually helped me understand the current issues of school rescheduling, though there is definitely a compromise somewhere. The health risks adolescents are exposed to in most schools is just plain unacceptable. Behind the scenes, it’s almost as if our biggest problem when tackling this issue is funding. Public schools aren’t given enough money to sustain a perfectly healthy schedule, so they are forced into cheap tactics like the underpaying of bus drivers and the merging of bus routes. When they aren’t merged, other issues arose. (like the article you showed me) By what I know of the definition of public vs private schools, public schools are mostly governmentally funded, and almost anything the government pays for comes from tax money, which means the root cause of this may actually be the current way taxes are collected and distributed, which I have an entire opinion about. (Simply put, the amount that taxes, fines, and other forms of a company/individual paying the government is charging should be based off the wealthiness of the company/individual in question. For example, the average speeding ticket fine is about $150 according to google, which for a millionaire is only 0.015% of their net worth. But for the median net worth of an American citizen of ages 74-65 ($224,000), that is about 0.67%. There is obviously something off-balance here, because a millionaire’s fine could be increased ten-fold with the percentage it is of their net worth still being under that of the median citizen. Anyway, I’ll stop talking :P)

I see a lot of posts in here talking about "homework" but I wanna push that forward a bit more. When we look at classes for highschool students classes can start anywhere from 7:45 to 8:00 am. (Sometimes earlier.) And most schools don't let out till 3:15 or later. Then not only do you have school but most kids have extra activities after school, like sports, art clubs, dnd, musical theatre, etc etc. And at the latest those can go from 3, to 5, 6, or even 7pm. Then we have the good old classic homework, granted most home work can be completed in 2 - 4 hours given you understand the material. Thats around 11pm, and you still have to find time for hobbies, family time, FOOD, and other things like showers and friends. The current schooling system is flawed.

Why don't a few school districts share a superintendent getting paid a 6 figure salary instead of schools like the one I graduated from having their own when my graduating class was less than 90 students! If 2 or 3 small districts shared a superintendent, each district would pay between $33k to $50k instead of $100+k and that money could go towards improving transportation so kids can actually be rested when their trying to learn!

Adam is right about the later start times being more beneficial for high school kids, but just throwing the blame on the local school district for being cheap is an over simplification. Often two funding issues are at play. The first could be that the school district just does not have enough money generated from property taxes/Milages for additional busses, staff, and maintenance. The second is that even if the school district has enough funds (thanks to federal /state funding or property taxes) most school spending is restricted by how or what you can spend money on. They do not operate on huge “general fund” where if there is a need, you can just spend the money. School funding and spending is closely monitored at the state/federal level and schools can lose funding for spending it “the wrong way”.

People have different reactions to almost everything. Something that impacts people negatively doesn't have lasting effects on everyone who went through it. There are people who smoke who live until 90, there are people who work a job where they're sitting constantly who don't have health problems, there are people who eat too much unhealthy food who don't gain wait or experience other health problems. That doesn't mean these things should be ignored. If something isn't healthy for the vast majority of a group it should probably be addressed. Hell, even if you didn't have lasting effects it wasn't good for you while you were going through it, isn't that enough?

Actually home schooled and computer schooled kid performed worse at every subject except reading and most colleges won't take a kid that's been homeschooled and private schools performed worse at real life vocational classes and many will drop out of classes not to mention the debts that most private schools are in

Elizabeth Frohn-hengst You might have well said that black is white. Homeschoolers and private score 5 to 15% percent higher than Public in academic tests. Less likely to end up in jail, commit suicide, and yes have lower exeptance rates in most colleges but have higher exeptance rates in ones that do except them. Like why is homeschooling increasing by 6% each year if it doesn't work. Same for private.

@@Ravenomics the reason homeschooling rates have gone up in certain states is because some states public schools are really really bad I'm only using the statistics I get from my state also I was almost homeschooled because of bullying I have also b in the one of theprivate schools in my town it had no vocational classes no elective except for band and choir and at the time was 2 million dollars in debt now it's at 7 million I think I was really happy to get out of it it had no funding now I'm in a really good public school also I have sites to prove my claims but I don't know how to copy paste on my phone since I don't usually need to

Thats the problem most American public schools are subpar at best and are not capable of using direct forms of education and simply blanket students and move on. Homeschooling is good but is dependant on the Parents education. Private when run well, can be better than both but are rare and expensive. All are dependant on variables but two are not owned by the government and dont cost tax dollars. And you have to give me a better excuse than doesnt know how to hold down on the web address.

In my county school starts at 8 am. This is almost enough time for high school students in most places. However, the county I live in is one of the biggest in the US, meaning for high school I would still need to get up at around 6 am just to have time to get to school as driving takes up to an hour with bad traffic which happens a lot. We have separate bus fleets for everyone but that still isn’t enough to account for sleep times since the buses leave at 7 am

This makes so much sense! It really is so hard getting up early when I don’t get tired till later and then my parents yell at me for being lazy 🙄 I just need more sleep! I think some other reasons that schools start earlier is so sports end earlier and so it’s still light out after school in the winter months.
