I have mixed in Adam A3X for many years now, still love them. I have listened to the Focals just recently, love these too. Both are monitors I can do great mixes with. I also have a sub to my A3X.

I use Focal Shape 50 for my home studio monitoring. A lot of bass for quite small speakers but the knobs on the rear pannel let us adjust the EQ settings properly. I assume the Shape 50 should have just a little less bass.

Adam for the win and if you prefer more bass in your face and more clarity due to the ribbon tweeters .

both with a subwoofer should be delightful. for me the upper mids are better for focal but low end and top treble slightly better for a3x. kh80 shape 40 and a3x are all amazing but need a sub.

it is not so easy to compare within these circumstances like the room, mics which recorded and the headphones which i am listening now. the reference track has full range, but the speakers have 60 hz bottom. so for a fair comparison, i put a hpf to 80 hz for whole video, then i listened; Adams have a nice high mids and highs. Focal has good low mids (check out the snare sounds with the original tracks). Even with the HPF, Adam still has a bottom end, but if you listen the kick, Focal is tighter because of low mids. And without HPF, Adams has more low end but it sounds like unmixed, bass pokes up from the mix. Focal doesnt have more bass then Adams but not pokes out. And the Focals have more mellow on high mids, and highs. in the Metal head track, guitar is not full like Adams. In Long night track, beacuse of there is no bass in the track, mids sounds very similar in both speakers. So summary, what i hear with my JBL 500T headphones, Adams has more bass but poking out, focal doesnt have much bass but it is tighter. In low mids, Focal is better, cos even there is no bass, the snare sound has the bottom like in the reference track. In high mids, focal is weaker cos the guitars in Metal head track are not bright enough. The highs sightly brighter in Adams (maybe much more brighter, my headphone should not be so good to regenerate the highs well). Soon or late we will want to add a sub, and crossover will split the speakers, so it is a much better idea to choose the speakers about the mid and high consideration. I liked both, beacuse i can hear all the instruments seperately. and both are very quality and solid speakers. I still didnt decided which to buy but i enjoyed to listen the cleaner low mids in Adams even not in the original tracks, but Focal sounds more balanced and tighter low mids. And i am not an engineer, thats just what i hear, and i'd be glad to have better reviews from users and professionals.

I think Adam has the better/more powerful richer bass too.

@Marin Pavešić nothing advantage, i mix 5 years with Adam A5, it sounds good but not better, its a little bit different and for me less naturally. AMT need experience and a good room for compensate the sometimes too much sibilant. But hey, we speak here from little thinks, mix with adam can have on the end maybe a little bit too less highs. I Use my Adam with -3db Highshelf Filter, that was not perfect but o.k.. I have Friends on Berlin/Germany, she have the same speaker and say the same.

@Marin Pavešić no not really, i know that before i buy the adam, i activate direct after buying -2 or -3 db on high but my mixes sounds a little bit dark. Also my friends connection on Berlin, mixe have too less highs, i think when you kill first reflection with room accustic and a Highshelf and a loot A-B comparison you can learn that, but for me personality is that a little bit too much like work agains my speaker. But this is also a question of Taste, iprefer more dark speaker or are Bright Speaker like Genelec, Genelec is good combination of both i think. Joke Time, maybe for 100 years old or almost deaf people is AMT betterxD Edit: oh and agains, we speak here from really little thinks, for good music is that not really important. I have bringht and dark speakerer here @home ;)
