I bought this single in 1980 and it STILL sounds fresh as a daisy. To me, it's a perfect record - utterly unique, theatrical and incredibly imaginative. The look, the sound, the energy of it all totally enthralled me 43 years ago, and to be honest, it still does.

Adam and the Ants were my age groups band, everyone at my school followed them. They started as a punk band playing the same gigs as the Sex Pistols and the Clash etc. Adam wanted to crack the pop market so the band split, most of them went with the pistols manager Malcolm McLaren and formed the band Bow wow wow (also worth checking) and Adam joined forces with Marco perroni and remained the core of the group through other changes. To keep to their original roots they always put a punk song on the B Side. Adam occasionally tours and sometimes only plays the B side songs 😎. I think they got their Pirate look from a band called Johnny and the pirates. Michael Jackson once phoned Adam to ask him where he got his hussars jacket. You should try one of their early songs, recommend Cartrouble part 2 or Catholic Day. They have two drummers btw, it's supposed to sound like North American Tribal Drums. Listen to the single Kings of the Wild Frountier for the best example of this.

My friend and I used to call it "cowpunk", where they incorporated a shiny kind of country-western music, with a punk aesthetic. The other big ones in the sub-genre was Wall of Voodoo and Bow Wow Wow (fun fact: Bow Wow Wow were the original Ants, and they and Adam came up from Malcolm McLaren's shop, as did Tenpole Tudor... so you're not wrong here!)

Oh Adam and the Ants - Miming on probably a European music show. But what a band to any kid that was was between 15 and 18 years old at the time. Sadly from what one hears the management team pumped some members with drugs to keep them moving from appearance to appearance and well, burned them out. Later leaving Adam with heath issues if the news is to believed. But in their short span they did knock out some excellent tracks.

Adam & The Ants began as a punk band in the late 70s. They had cult status and some hardcore fans but, after a lineup change, Adam decided to move in a more pop direction. The look was a mish mash of Native American and pirate style. The lyrics had tribal vibe which matched the the heavy playing of the two drummers in the band. If you want to check out more songs, I'd recommend "Kings of the wild frontier".

When I was a 6th former we used to do a disco for the 1st and 2nd years (11-12 yo) and the stuff t hat really set them off was Adam and the Ants. As fully matured, too cool for school, 17 year olds we didn't hold much love for them but the younger kids absolutely loved it. It was especially this, Ant Music, Kings of the Wild Frontier and Ant Rap, so before Prince Charming. The beat is based on Burundi beat and that stayed with them and the two drummers throughout, which is why it was still there for Goody Two Shoes. If you want Squeeze doing it for fun then listen to 'Trust' - only Gilson playing though.

Adam And The Ants were very *big* in Australia in 1981, and I was an obsessed Antperson (Adam Ant fans were called Antpeople). I had their/his posters on my wall, and I had every single and album he'd/they'd done (I had to wait for _Dirk Wears White Sox_ to be re-released in Australia in 1983). Being part of the Countdown contingent/community meant that all my friends were also mad about Ants, and through this fandom, I got to make new friends! One of the best times in my life was seeing Adam And The Ants at the Festival Hall in Melbourne. My friends and I were dedicated ''antpeople''. We would dress in the Ant regalia at the concert, and have little sword lights outside the venue. I got to see them perform ''Antmusic'' on Countdown, and Adam Ant autographed my copy of _Kings Of The Wild Frontier._ I strongly advise you guys to check out: ''Antmusic'' (# 1 in Australia), ''Stand And Deliver'' (# 12 in Australia), and ''Prince Charming'' (# 4 in Australia). I was so sad when Adam And The Ants dispanded. I still enjoyed ''Goody Two Shoes'' and ''Friend Or Foe'', and everything else that followed. Kings Of The Wild Frontier and Prince Charming are still great pop albums. I would never have thought that Mi-Sex had a higher charting hit in Canada than Adam Ant! If I knew that in 1981 I probably would have told Mi-Sex off (it wasn't hard to talk to bands in the Countdown studios). How did you guys not get more Adam And The Ants? Surely, you'd have to know ''Antmusic''? Anyway, great reaction!

I've always seen this as a revenge song toward his previous manager for stealing his band members and using them to form Bow Wow Wow. "Only idiots ignore the truth" that Adam was the one that was gonna be huge. The "leap frog" analogy was a stab at the dog-eat-dog music business. And he could've given up, but he was gonna fight like a warrior to get there instead. And then, proud of those who followed him for recognizing the awesomeness if it. All that aside, what a unique and amazing song. Powerful and beautiful. Genius in a Beatle-ish way...

Adam went solo after 3 Ants albums. His solo music is very different from the group's. The Ants' are much more based in punk, whereas Adam's solo career is much more commercial/pop. Ants' music was (mostly) co-written by Adam and Marco Peroni. The solo stuff was partly written by Adam, but he had a lot of external help from other writers. Please don't lump the solo and the group music together, they are from completely different genres. Both have their own merits, but, very different.

Loved those K-tel (and EMI) comps. All cheap and nasty with poorly edited songs and shabby sound quality. We loved them! _Full Boar_ was one of my favourites. We had goodies like 1981.. Rocks on, 1981... The Sound, 1982 Out Of The Blue, 1982.. With A Bullet, 1981 Over The Top, 1980 (The Summer), The Winners 1982, 1983... Summer Breaks, Squeezed Out, 1980... The Music, 1983 The Hot Ones, 1982.. In The Sun, Hitwave '81, Countdown Chartbusters... My dad devised this system. If I loved a song and gave it a 10 out of 10, he'd buy the 45 single.. If I loved an artists (like Adam Ant), I could have the entire album.. he'd even read through the song titles on a compilation and if I said ''yes' enough times, he'd buy it, but would not buy any of the songs as a 7''. I'd get home and be upset that ''Vienna'' by Ultravox didn't sound as good on 1981.. Rocks On as it did on the radio. Fun days!!!
