This piece, this recording brings tears to my eyes every time I watch it. The music, the theme, the dancing, the set, costuming and the dancers - just ethereal.

I saw this ballet at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in LA back in July of the early 80s. It was performed by the Bolshoi! The A/C failed just as the performance was starting. The heat inside must have reached well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit!! Those dancers persevered on. We in the audience sat there and just dripped in sweat. Yet, this scene won everyone over. It was the same set as shown here, and the same costumes. Afterward, as my wife and I (and others, of course) walked to our cars, the dancers filed out to the waiting KGB bus, with Soviet guards (in bulky suits) minding them. Such little people, those dancers. We simply stopped, and allowed them to file onto the bus. We made sure to give them another standing ovation!!! Moments like that you can never forget.

BTW, composer Khachaturian's SPARTACUS is dated 1954, and this Bolshoi performance is dated 1984. I doubt that Khachaturian had even heard "Stormy Weather" in 1954. He could not have heard "My Way" in 1954!

To entertain Crassus and his entourage, Spartacus is sent into the gladiatorial ring and is forced to kill a close friend. Horrified at his deed, Spartacus incites his fellow captives to rebellion. Act II[edit] The escaped captives celebrate their freedom. Meanwhile, Crassus entertains the Roman patricians with a lavish entertainment, including fights between blindfolded gladiators. The seductive Aegina incites a sexual orgy. Spartacus and his men disrupt the orgy and rescue the slave women, including Phrygia. The insulted Aegina insists that Crassus pursue the slave army immediately. The lovers celebrate their escape to the "Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia". Act III[edit] Aegina discovers Spartacus’s camp and observes the lovers emerging from their tent the next morning. Aegina sends word to Crassus, who sends his army in pursuit. Internecine struggles break out among Spartacus’s forces. Finally, Crassus’s forces discover Spartacus and impale him upon their spears. Spartacus’s closest followers recover his body and carry it off while Phrygia mourns her loss. BTW, composer Khachaturian's SPARTACUS is dated 1954, and this Bolshoi performance is dated 1984. I doubt that Khachaturian had even heard "Stormy Weather" in 1954. He could not have heard "My Way" in 1954!
