Always just telling people about our first dungeoncrawling, we didn't really know what we were doing since our friends mom got him a collection of editions of D&D, so we would use my dad's surveying paper to all draw these sprawling dungeons (like we'd seen in video games like daggerfall and stonekeep) and then our buddy who was the DM would fill it will monster's and treasure he thought sounded cool. And my first character I don't really remember his name, and all our party got wiped by two grells in the first hour or so of playing 😅

Pg121 - I love this video. I currently make heavy use of Grell in a dungeon below a city in my campaign that is lorded over by a Beholder. The two are so thematically similar that I threw them in together with the background being these creatures are from a bizarre and alien dimension (read as the Far Realm). I use an identical save mechanic too as multiple hits, especially against mid to lower level PCs, would be almost guaranteed to paralyze. Thanks for the treatment of this weird and wonderful Fiend Folio classic baddie.

I love using grell. They're the creepiest looking monster in the standard D&D monster books.

The Grell is one of those unique designs that really make it an iconic member of the D&D bestiary. Like the old WW2 airplane spotting cards, if you see just a silhouette you know exactly what you're facing.

A nasty monster for a small party to take on. And if you want to be cruel the Grell could just levitate up out of reach, prey in its grasp.

Thanks for the video! I didn't use many of the Fiend Folio creatures back in the day (any giant animal or insect, Crypt Thing, Death Knight, Kuo-Toa, Skeleton Warrior, a few others) but as some of them were more fully realized in later editions (3.XE onward), I did use more of them. The more I look back on that book, the more of them I wished I used back then. Fun retrospective on the floating brain-holder!

I see Grell levitating out of reach of the party once their first victim is paralyzed.

Mike Grell! Yes! I remember his Starslayer comic, which is sort of more famous for having the back-up story of The Rocketeer by Dave Stevens in a couple very early issues. ;-)
