Acute Elbow and Shoulder Injuries in Young Athletes

Acute elbow injuries and shoulder dislocations are frequent injuries that present to an emergency department. Athletic trainers and others who provide musculoskeletal care on the sidelines and in urgent care settings need to know how to assess and manage these conditions in adolescents. Treatment of primary instability events is evolving and athletic trainers need to be familiar with the risks and benefits associated with various treatment decisions in the emergency care of a dislocated shoulder. Pediatric orthopedic surgeon Philip L. Wilson, M.D., and physician assistant Ben Johnson, P.A.-C., A.T.C., address these conditions from the pediatric sports medicine perspective.
Physical therapist, Laura Saleem, P.T., M.P.T., follows with an overview of rehabilitation and management of these conditions in young athletes. Considerations for the unique needs of adolescents are included.
This program was part of a live event called Sports Medicine for the Young Athlete and closed with a panel discussion and response to audience questions.
