Acts 10 - Skip Heitzig

Many in the early church had a hard time believing God's grace extended to the Gentiles. In this message, we learn how God used a Roman centurion to reveal to Peter that no one is beyond the reach of God and there is no place for bigotry among His people.
This teaching is from our series 44 Acts - 2017 with Skip Heitzig from Calvary Church.

Dear Plaster Heitzig, I enjoy your bible studies so much. You are brilliant, not only do you teach the word of God, you incorporate history, geography and language lessons as well. How wonderful! May God bless you and strengthen you, so that you will continue teaching his word and enrich others. Be blessed! Dawn Jackman

Glory to God for loving us all; for extending his grace to all of us; for giving his son to all of us. When I read this section, I reflect on God's grace extended to Peter as well and I pray for God to show me my own prejudices against others for whatever reason.

I am listening to your preachings (and some other pastors) to broaden my knowledge of the bible. This is very helpful for someone like me who wants to teach people here in the Philippines "meatier stuffs," so we can bring up next generation deacons inside the church like in acts chapter 6, and not just rely on pastors to evangelize.

Hello Richard, This is Nick Macedo, I have the opportunity to be on the pastoral staff here at Calvary Albuquerque. On behalf of Pastor Skip and the rest of the pastoral staff I would like to thank you for your question! In regards to your question about Daniel being a eunuch, the short answer is that it is never said explicitly in scripture that he was, but it is likely historically. The long answer is that in Daniel 1:3-10 (attached below), it is stated that Daniel was assigned under the chief of the eunuchs. While not confirmed explicitly in Scripture, some rabbinic and early church literature states that Daniel and his friends were thought to have been eunuchs. Historically, it is documented that royal court servants in Babylon were required to be eunuchs. Despite this probability, Daniel was still able to be used greatly on God’s behalf setting a great example for us as believers. I hope this answers your question and offers further insight for you! Best regards, Nick Macedo Calvary Church Pastor

a question about this chapter that I have been juggling around about. so as Christians do we follow the torah and not eat unclean animals just like the jews till this day? because since this was not about food but about a renewal of peters heart and about accepting gentiles, peters still kept the law (torah) and didn't eat those things considered unclean in the Lords eyes. I didn't eat pork for such a long time because I wanted to obey the torah as being a Christian. then I came across this chapter and took it literal and started eating pork and other animals considered unclean. but I don't want to sin against God. if you can clarify that would be awesome. God bless

This is Nick Macedo and I have the privilege of serving as an assistant pastor on staff here at Calvary. On behalf of Pastor Skip, I want to thank you for sending in your question. In regards to your specific question about the Old Testament law, as Christians we do believe we have to follow the ceremonial aspects of the Law (i.e. sacrifices, not eating non-kosher foods, fabric regulations, etc…) However, as followers of Jesus, we are still required to follow the moral aspects of the Law (i.e. not murdering, not stealing, not committing adultery, loving your neighbor, etc…) The full-length answer is this: Jesus did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill the Law (Matthew 5:17). Jesus’ teaching here, as well as passages in Romans and Galatians, means that the law was originally set up to show God’s followers how much we lack as humans. No matter how perfect or “good” we may be, we could never fulfill the Law nor follow every rule perfectly. Then Jesus steps into the picture, He is the actual fulfillment of the Law. Because of Jesus’ once-for-all sacrifice on our behalf, we are no longer under the ceremonial aspects of the Law. When He died on the cross and rose again, this was the completion of mankind’s redemption. So, the Law is not to be done away with, but completed. This shows the gravity of Jesus’s sacrifice on our behalf. As followers of Jesus, the law does not apply to us. If we have made the decision to follow Christ, He accepts us as we are. There is no amount of works or rule-following that we can do to gain or lose His favor. I hope this answers your question, let us know if there is anything else you are curious about! Best Regards, Nick Macedo Calvary Church Assistant Pastor
