Selleck wanted to play Indy, but he was under contract to be in "Magnum", and the producers wouldn't let him have the time off to make the movie. So Lucas (producer) and Spielberg (director) went back to their original pick, Harrison Ford. Lucas didn't want him in the role, because he was already Han Solo, and was afraid he was getting too dependent on Ford in his movies.

I remember a similar situation in the '80's when James Bond producers wanted Pierce Bronson to play Bond, (eventually he did in the '90's yes). The producers wouldn't let him out of his Remington Steele tv show contract. The role went to Timothy Dalton who played Bond for only 2 films and Remington Steele ended production of the show after only a handful of episodes in that final year.

The role that should have been played by one specific actress but was, sadly, played by another was the role of Holly Golightly in the movie Breakfast At Tiffany's. The role was absolutely perfect for Marilyn Monroe. Unfortunately at that time Monroe was incapable of participating in the movie so the role went to Audrey Hepburn. Hepburn was good in the part but the character of Holly Golightly was almost custom-made for Monroe.

When Bob Osborne, the late, long-time host of Turner Classic Movies, was told this tidbit of trivia decades ago, he said he could never watch the movie again with the same appreciation because he could see how good the movie could have been. But there is certainly nothing wrong with Audrey Hepburn and the movie is somewhere in the top 25 of my favorite movies.

He could have done the suave martini drinking (shaken not stirred), “lady killer,” as well as the physical fighting stuff probably more realistically than any of the Bonds until Daniel Craig. As far. Selleck did not turn down IJ. He was under a binding pilot contract. Lucas and Spielberg could not get him released either. They both tried hard. Ford got the part by default at the last minute because they had waited too long for Selleck thinking his Magnum series would not be picked up.

From an earlier era in Hollywood history, we have one about acting greats, Charles Laughton and Alec Guinness. Laughton revealed that he was offered the role of the colonel, in "The Bridge on the River Kwai"; but repeatedly turned it down. Alec Guinness inherited the role and won an Oscar for it. Much later, Laughton was quoted as saying he never could understand the character, so he kept turning down the part. He added, only when he saw the performance of Alec Guinness, did he finally understand. Alec Guinness said that Laughton's words meant more to him, than winning the Academy Award for the part.

Would Clint Eastwood have been so successful if Charles Bronson hadn't turned down not one, but all three movies in the 'Dollars'trilogy. Or if John Wayne, Robert Mirchum, William Holden and even Frank Sinatra had accepted the role of Dirty Harry Callahan when it was offered to each of them in turn. Clint was way down the list when it came to choosing actors for what became his most iconic role. But of course nearly every great actor owes their career to a twist of fate when lady luck smiled on them.

Only possible answer to that question is yes they were the right characters for that role. Possibly somebody else might have been the right one. But they were there they did it they excelled and they were remembered for it. And people probably want more.

Saying an actor 'turned down' a role doesn't always mean he would have for certain gotten the role if he had wanted it. Rather it often just means they were offered the opportunity to audition along with several other actors, and turned the audition down. I'm pretty certain Burt Reynolds never had a lock on James Bond - he was offered the chance to audition and declined because he didn't think he would get the part since he wasn't British.

What if Burt Lancaster said "yes" to playing Ben-Hur? What if Cary Grant accepted the Bond offer? What if Jeff Bridges said "okay" to Indiana? What if Mae West said "yes" to "Sunset Boulevard"? What if Rod Steiger accepted George C.'s role in "Patton"? The kist goes on and ob. The fact is, we cannot turn back the clock .What if Jane Fonda took the Dunaway role in "Chinatown"? The lucjy ones got the roles and cried all the way to the bank .
