22 year old Larry Storch & then 19 year old Bernie Swartz (Tony Curtis) served on the USS Proteus & were actually in Tokyo Bay, when Gen. MacArthur signed the Surrender Agreement with Japan on the USS Missouri! Storch will go down in television history as one of, if not the greatest 'character' actors of all time! R.I.P. Larry!

I've been a fan of Larry's ever since I was 8 years old and he costarred with Forrest Tucker and Bob Burns in The Ghostbusters, one of my favorite Saturday morning kids shows back in the 70s. .He was great in whatever he appeared in or contributed his voice to. I know that 99 years is a long life, but when someone as talented, funny and by all accounts as kind as Larry Storch passes away, 99 years doesn't seem nearly long enough. Thanks for the laughs Larry...rest in peace. and and thanks to this channel for the tribute.

My father served on the Proteus with these two. The Proteus was a submarine tender and none of the submarines they serviced was ever lost. My dad had a picture of the Proteus with 12 Japanese submarines, six on each side, tied to it after the Japanese surrender their vessels. Also pictures of the Japanese crews. The Proteus also served as Admiral John McCain's flagship at times.

He was doing the night club circuit, trying to climb out of his stifling Jackie Gleason contract years. It didn't take long for Larry to get back on top again. I ran into him again in Los Angeles in 1977 at K-EARTH Radio. A genuinely nice guy.
