Action Figures: Soichiro Kanashima - IKIGAI
Japan - Summer, 2019 - I’ve had the pleasure of capturing some great highlights of Soichiro over the past few years from winning best trick at 2018’s Winterclash, taking first at the Boschi Pope Skate Off that same year, 2nd at 2019’s Blading Cup, and then taking a last minute trip to Japan where we stayed mostly in Tokyo to film street and wrapping up in his hometown of Okayama.
While in the U.S. we don’t normally view the cicada as anything more than a bug however in Japan they are very symbolic. Aside from hearing them sing in anime and and even throughout this video, they represent the beginning of summer, play a significant role in several children’s lives, and most importantly, they represent personal transformation.
As Soichiro states, Japan is an island which requires a plane to go anywhere outside of the country - “and because we only speak Japanese there’s a huge hurdle for us to go anywhere” - yet through his dedicated years invested into skating he was able to overcome that social hurdle and go beyond not only for himself but for the next generation of young skaters.
From his most recent winning, (one of the biggest - if not the biggest - pay days in blading history) at the Chimera A-Side Final, to a plethora of memorable street skating sections in videos and online, to running his own “Yamada Green” skate park in Okayama guiding some of the already most talented kids- one can easily say that he has truly discovered his passion in life or found his “ikigai” as he continuously evolves and transforms as a skater and mentor.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this episode possible.
_______________
Ikigai (pronounced ee-key-guy) is a wonderful Japanese concept that essentially means “a reason for being.” It’s made from two Japanese words: iki, meaning “life” and kai, meaning “effect, result, worth or benefit.” Combined: “a reason for living.”
Examples of ikigai are often related to aspects of social identity - including work and family life - but it’s often explained as something more than that. It’s the idea of seeking a purpose in everything you do in life. Hobbies, friendships, community and travel all add to your ikigai.

This documentary should also be broadcast on commercial television channels. It beautifully represents this sport, his meaning in the culture and benefits for young people all over the world.
🙏It's an honor to have my music featured in this video

I met him n also Mike Opalek in 2009 Singapore X-Games n skate together. Finally found 2 of my influential OGs back in my younger days!
I’m 36 and use to skate heavy from around 12 to 16 . Life got in the way and I lost the passion here I am now with my first child turning 9 months getting back into skating and loving it all . Watching docs like this give me such pleasure and nostalgia. This sport is so underrated and unappreciated. My son will skate and I will make sure he never loses that love.
Wow I love everything about this. The quality is unmatched, ButterTV is the best 💯

Japan is the future of rollerblading. Skill wise, they have passed the u.s and euro. Papi Japan
out of all the summer action sports, i always thought this looked like it's the most fun. not sure why it hasn't become bigger than it is

Well it was really big back in the day but yeah sadly it has never reached even close to those heights again, I do hope one day it can be as big as it once was in the 90's.
To be a skater in a society that preaches doesn't give up
He is literally the Bruce Lee of rollerblading he does so much for us. So much love he's the man
Damn Soichiro is the man!
I needed this video when i was in my early 20’s , now 34. At the time I hung my skates up due the grinding street culture taking over too much and I forgot that skating was about having fun and expressing my movement, only focusing on impressive grinds at the time which took my love away from skating . Had I still had the same knees and no slipped discs I would definitely be back at my park or local street sections to focus on expression and movement over trick Caliber Thank you for this video 🙏
Watched every Action Figures episode. Really great mini docus. Awesome production.

10,000,000 yen win ! That’s $95,000 usd ! Happy to see someone getting paid in rollerblading
Please do more Action Figures sections. Truly amazing and shows the core of what skatings about
Favorite skater! Love the way he skates and what he put back into the sport.
It's so nice to see Chiaki Ito being mentioned in this. My first pair of skates were Salomon STI Teams, so I grew up watching the likes of Chiaki Ito, Aaron Feinberg and even Chris Farmer had a pair for VG19. Great times and it's amazing to see this scene still going strong. I also remember from Japan the Yasutoko brothers, albeit they were from the more commerical vert scene.
This is absolutely fantastic, as usual! Love hearing Soichiro speak. And that bs backslide to top porn on the curved kink was NUTS
Pretty much spot on to how our crew views rolling halfway around the world in Milwaukee, WI. . . Ikigai. . . Much Love and wish I could visit Okayama to experience “Yamada Green” skate park myself !
Iconic Soichiro
This is one of my favorite episodes of Action Figures. Technnical aspect is just flawless. Beautiful photography, image and color correction and color depth are on point, sound is on point, and the editing is flawless. I didn´t know Soichiro was such a cool character, and that he ran a skatepark. Love the fact that this piece brings everyone closer to him as a person and it´s cool to see that he was around from the very beginning and supports the blading community besides being a badass blader. This is the kind of stuff that is helping put blading on the map again. Great stuff as usual Butter TV! keep up the amazing work!
Skate and Filming goals! Gonna binge watch more of this series!
Saw this guy on KZread and immediately bought skates, love the vibe and great video work 🤙

damn this is done so well. very nice work and super cool to see that he owns a skatepark and teaches. Didn't know that about him and much more respect for the dude now. awesome stuff
So sick to hear about Chiaki!🙌 amazing how influential
Oh the one I’ve been waiting for! To be honest I thought his voice would be a little lower, on a side note. Totally enjoyed watching this little profile vid of him and it’s really heartwarming to see him teaching the next generation. Love his mentality of put emphasis on developing style. I can’t wait to see who is next!
Thanks for the great content which describe aggressive inline scene at this level.🙏 One of a kind inline skate media for sure.
Everything perfect! Soichiro is the man!
Another masterpiece, JP! I wanna see one with Broskow, or Darst, or Paz!

Main lenses used are Canon 24-105mm f/4 and Canon fisheye 8-15mm f/4. Occasionally a 16-35mm f/2.8 is used as well as some primes but for this particular project only the first two I listed were used. Cheers!
