I had to do the same thing with my son when he was about 7 years old…. Took him right back to the store to return that pack of gum…he haven’t stolen anything since to my knowledge… he’s 16years old now.🙌🏽

Why didn't he eat the candy? Why tipped his parents to the stash and why did they suspect it was stolen?
Everyone doesn't have a forgiving mind. Everyone doesn't have a helping hand. If everyone has good intentions, then surely there won't be any people facing difficulties in their life.

just to let others here know - later in life when you apply for certain Government jobs, they will require a questionnaire and possibly lie detector test where you will be asked if you stole anything as a youngster. They consider that a disqualifier for some sensitive positions. Government background here.

Kids like candy and are unlikely to think one has too much. What is more unrealistic is his stashing, rather than eating it.
