Acrylic Paint Brand Comparison of 8 brands

Acrylic paint brand comparison video comparing eight different #acrylic brands to determine the best acrylic paint. 5 of which are single pigment colors and the additional 3 I just thought would be fun to add to have a larger selection to be reviewed. The brands are Liquitex Professionals Heavy Body Acrylic, Artist's Loft Professionals (High Viscosity Acrylics), Liquitex basics #acrylicpaint , Folkart craft paint, Utrecht Heavy Body, Golden Heavy Body Acrylics, Academy Acrylic (Grumbacher) and Royal & Langnickel. The single pigment color that we are reviewing is PB29 which is Ultramarine Blue.
This video is in no ways sponsored by any of the brands or the stores I purchased these paints from.
This is my first time painting with the Artist's Loft Professionals, Royal & Langnickel and Academy.
In this comparison video I will be looking at color as is, total coverage, detailed coverage, the ability for a paint to create and maintain a texture, tinting ability (done two ways), price, finished sheen and the difference in the paint tube name.
If you're like me I'm always curious how the different brands will do but sometimes it's hard to branch out from the ones I'm comfortable with. I have often been standing in an art isle (or online shopping) debating branching out but afraid to spend my money on a total dud! What if the paint sucks? How will it mix? What if it drys in a different sheen? What if it takes 6+ coats to cover another color and costs more but performs less?
I always enjoy making these videos as I'm not sure who will end up performing well and who wont. Had some surprising results in today's tests. Some brands I'll be using again and others will not be added to my painting tool box.
Please like, comment and subscribe. Your support is greatly appreciated. I post weekly are videos :)
If there are other brands or paint colors you'd like reviewed please post a comment below and I will try to accommodate all requests!

I was wondering when she talked about it comparing it to the others "girl what are you on about, it's so perfectly non streaky". That's one of my biggest pet peeves with acrylic paints, the lumpy uneven streaky some parts being translucent and other parts being opaque inconsistency. Besides, i'm glad the folk art was the one paint that was different than the rest in those regards because it's one of the few options i have when it comes to painting polymer clay because other paints they said tends to never dry perfectly on polymer clay. I guess it depends on what you're painting but for polymer clay this is perfect for me.

FolkArt has an opacifier in it. The artist grade brands reflect the true nature of the pigment. Ultramarine blue is naturally transparent.

The folkart covered better than all of them. It was the most opaque of all for the least price. I wouldn't dare spend more. For texture I'll just add it to modeling paste. Thanks for the review. It looks like folkart has a brightener and zinc for coverage in it. Love it.

I’m guessing that folk art blue used a lot of opacifier or titanium white to give it that one-coat coverage. Hobby paints for plastic miniatures are usually formulated in a similar way. Ultramarine is one of the few pigments that increases in saturation when mixed with white so it slightly benefits from this approach.

@Nicholas Caldwell I always feel like when I have the craft paints in there it's like cheating. They almost always cover faster than the professional grade paints but that's really the purpose...to cover craft projects like ceramic figures or wood panels in as few of coats as possible (otherwise they wouldn't be so popular for craft projects).

Thank you for these tests!! We all know how much effort it takes to make a chart, not to talk about making a video!!! Thank you again!! Just a few thoughts... One of Ultramarine paint's main property is being transparent! Using mostly for tinting/color mixing and not for it's coverage! Testing it for coverage should be opposite than in your test: the less opaque, the best the paint is... Also it would be helpful in my opinion to test their mixing power/property with colors that would show their bias: in this case with red or yellow. What purple/green they would produce, how greyed the new colors would be... And just one more: high viscosity paint means high "flow"!! They are the opposite of heavy body so don't be surprised in the future if they will be runny! ;) Thank you again and waiting for your future tests!!!

Final entry. I finally reached Grumbacher Tech Dept. and talked at length about their paint. They confirmed they are using a newer formula that is only comprised of Hues in their acrylics. So no more single pigments like what I was using and no more cadmium paints. I was very disappointed of course since their paint is more costly then every other competitive paint. So I guess my budget paint will have to be liquitex basic from now on :( Nothing wrong with that of course but the higher pigment of the Grumbacher was an advantage. But now just a couple more layers and half the price of liquitex makes it a sweet deal. Fare thee well and have a nice day :)

I was feeling iffy about the folkart but this video helped me make up my mind, ill get it. I need the paint to be matte finish and water based because any other finish or base would react with polymer clay and never fully dry, but some pictures on the internet bugged me because i hate when paint is applied looking streaky, like some areas are translucent and other parts are more opaque. I'm used to the liqutex brand but i wanted to use something else since i think my liquitex wasn't the greatest for my polymer clay works. As soon as i saw the folkart look one consistent streak i was already sold. When it comes to polymer clay i don't have much acrylic paint options but based on what i saw this is it for me. I also like that it's not that thick right out of the bottle, i also hate when they're too thick because it makes the projects look too lumpy. Besides, i don't mind that it's not as deep a blue next to the others, i can always find a way to richen it, besides how often will i need to make anything that blue? I'm looking to detail sculptures not painting the whole thing in thick paint.

Right now I’m tying myself in knots looking at pigment info for galleria and system 3, trying to work out which will be best for my way of working. It’s great to see you demonstrate. My biggest problem is not knowing which are the best match complimentaries for my choices of primary, as I often like the op art approach of using them side by side to make magic happen. Frustratingly I have worked all that out by experience with a set of W&N watercolours, but find that the galleria acrylics don’t always use the same pigments. 😥 Do you enjoy experimenting that way?

OO-trekt. I was surprised at how well the folk art did. The colour is not that nice; I think there's a fair bit of chalk in there. But the coverage was excellent. I would have liked to see you include the two Australian brands Jo Sonya's and Mattisse, not because I am a big supporter of Australian things, but because they really are good brands. Jo Sonya's, which used to be a rather poor craft brand, is now very good. Some people having been raving about it on KZread. Matisse has some cons - the Structure heavy body are in lead tubes, which is a big no-no for acrylics (and they have fiddly caps - YAY for your comment on caps), but I genuinely think their ultramarine is the most beautiful around.

I thoroughly enjoy your comparison videos. They are always excellent. However as a Grumbacher fanboy I am hypersensitive about their product because of it's excellent value. So when you said it didn't have any technical data about it's composition i blew a fuse. Right where your finger pointed at the item name on either side of that in small print are the specs. It is a PB29 only paint with a light fastness of 1. It should have been in the category on the left. Although I'm sure the results would be very similar, the sub conscious thought that it was in a "Cheap" paint category may have caused a bias. As you mentioned numerous times your surprise at it's result. In your other videos it has also placed well. I would never expect it to compare with Golden, Utrechts or Liquidtex Pro, but it paints very well and for price and availability it's a bargain. It's also made in U.S.A. and has a high pigment content for a student grade paint. It's similar to Winsor and Newton galeria but a little better :). I could go on and on about it since the paint brushes in my opinion are far more critical to actual painting then the paint. I do paint with Princeton Catalyst Polytips so its not that I'm cheap heh heh...Just a Grumbacher fanboy. Sorry for the rant. keep up the good work! Update No1...It looks like I was wrong about my Grumbacher paint. It apears that they have a new formula and It's in the plastic tubes. All the plastic tubes are Hues. I've contacted Grumbacher about it three times and am still waiting on a reply as to wether the aluminum tubes that I use are still made in single pigments and still available. If i ever get a response i will make another update. P.S. I do actually use Golden acrylics in primarys in warm and cool colors but only sparingly on special projects, because they are way too expensive for casual painting.

I would encourage you to try out Nova Color Paints. Not only is the price competitive, it is 100% made in USA, it is high end professional paint, and the pigment load is higher than paints I have tried at 3X the price. The only downside, but helps with the price, it is only available directly from the manufacturer.

well, Ultramarine is not an opaque pigment. Perhaps the goal is not to give perfect coverage. Perhaps you want to glaze and actually have it be transparent. If you used an opaque pigment, I could see comparing the coverage. Its not totally useless, you learn alot between brands, I love the value of Utrecht oil paints and they seem to be "The best value of the good ones"

That’s why I do these. I think when people pick paints they need to understand what their goal is…do you want your paint to be opaque, are you doing washes, do you plan to mix them with other colors? Knowing that is, IMO, the first step to figuring out what you need

No no no the lids on liquitex are awful! I had many tubes ruined because the lid was so stuck, and i had nothing to grip when unscrewing the cap...completely awful design... I also can't stand Golden as well...ive had so many caps break in half! They need better quality control!! The best lids are the flip caps like on liquitex basics!!!!

Most likely to cover the costs of shipping, import and handling. Sometimes you pay more for shipping+import than the actual product itself, which is a pain indeed. Edit: plus, if it's in physical stores, most likely they will raise the price a bit too so they can profit and pay worker salary from them too (I work as a cashier, that's basically how it works with imported goods. For US people it's gonna be the same when buying our EU products)

It seems you refuse to admit folk art won when it came to coverage of the black and details. Why is that? I know it wasn't as dark as you were wanting. However, I would add a tiny bit of black to darken it the desired color.

Because ultramarine isn't made to be opaque. There has to be a bit of filler or white in it hence it's chalkyness. It's not good unless you enjoy cracking and poor mixing. I've gone the craft paint route years ago and it's not worth it. Just trying to help.
