As soon you started talking, I knew you are great. Wish others KZreadrs do the same ... be clear and objective. Thank you for sharing. ♥️
Great video! I've always found colors confusing. This was very clear.

Mal, you are one of my favorite people, and all of your videos are so helpful!! Thank you :)
I wish I was as good at painting as Mal is here... But this video will definitely help me a little. Great video Malmakes.
Thank you for this Mal, so helpful for a beginner artist with literally no prior experience. I hope one day I can be as talented as you.

I'm very happy you're covering this, because sometimes I really struggle getting the color I need. Looking forward to the other color mixing videos!
I really appreciate this series
This helps a lot! I wasn't sure about the mixing process, but I'll be sure to reference this video when I attempt to paint something!
Watching how perfectly you fill in the wheel is so satisfying XD
When you got to the tertiary colors, I immediately thought of the colors song from Blue’s Clues. 😆 🎵Chartreuse, a color I had not seen... Looks to me like a yellowish-green!🎵 😊

Surely I can't be the only one who recognized the Pokemon Sun and Moon music.. Thank you!
Nice 👍 job.
This is totally useful and very beautiful. Colors attract me a lot. Nice video for new artists.
This was so satisfying to watch :) great video!
Nobody taught that beautifully and clearly ❤️

@@joshyboy1983 Fun isn't something one considers when watching someone paint a color wheel, but this...does put a smile on my face.
Thank you! ❤️
Awesome Video!
Awesome video but when your making those things of 30 degrees, could you join them the way you want
Curious: what are non-conventional color wheels?
@MalMakes

RYB is a conventional color wheel - it's basically historical in color theory whereas CMY is updated/modern/proven by science. You can also do color wheels with organic (natural) pigments and inorganic (synthetic) pigments.

MalMakes thank you!!
My grandma actually created the color theory curriculum for CU in Denver!
I ❤️❤️ your videos there amazing
Hey, Mal! Do you use/think in RYB or CMY when doing your paintings?
@MalMakes
4 жыл бұрын
It's really strange to me - like thinking in a different language! I mostly think in RYB because I'm teaching and it's what most people have and know. Also because I don't have any Cyan paint so I'm generally not using that color space for painting. :D
thats great mem
Nice video. I will use this with my students in art class

Chloe Sismour When I taught high school I basically had all my art 1 students do these exercises in their sketchbooks. :)
I always had extreme difficulty mixing colors on a palette. When i was in art class in high school for my second year my teacher always chastised me and bumped my final grade down on the final 3 paintings we had to complete for our 9 weeks exam. All because i found it easier to find the colors i liked after they mixed on the canvas. I no longer paint but I now understand at how easy this is now...

You got bumped down for painting wet-in-wet on the canvas to get your color? :( Speaking as an art teacher- that’s ridiculous. I’m sorry.
Tertiary blue-green AKA PHILADELPHIA EAGLES GREEN😊😊😊😊
Mal: your gonna need a compass *pulls out a ruler like thing* Me::Uh... I've never seen a compass like that *Mal uses said equipment* i NEED ONE!

@@MalMakes I'm gonna have to find one of those compasses lol
Admittedly I've begun thinking more in terms of Cyan Magenta Yellow like you mentioned. The colors you get by mixing them are much more vibrant. However, RYG are still a good intro to color theory.
Really excited for this series! Thanks, Mal!
Yes yes I am seeing
I immediately thought of the colors song from Blues Clues Colors mix above my head! Colors mix above my head! Like orange made with yellow and red! Chartreuse! A color I have not seen... Looks to me like yellowish green! If we want violet we know just what to do-o! Just mix our two friends purple and blue! Just mix our two friends purple and blue!
Great video, I noticed you put paper on top of the paint to avoid it from drying. How long can paint last with that method?
@MalMakes
3 жыл бұрын
I use plastic wrap (cling film) recycled from the plastic my canvases come wrapped in. On average - my standard heavy body acrylics last about 3-4 days depending on how well I cover the paints and how much paint. If I use slow drying acrylic (golden open) it can much longer! Using a "stay wet" palette you don't have to use plastic but I find those get moldy.
Where did you get your plastic compass please?
Thanks po
I feel like I can never get a more brilliant purple. I always get a rather dull violet, and I'm not sure how to correct this.
@MalMakes

Mary I Mostly it has to do with RYB vs CYM paints and neither being primary enough. Science hasn’t gotten a perfect primary pigment mix yet so secondary colors like violet get muddied when mixed. You’ll notice how transparent my primaries look in this video while the secondary colors are more opaque. I suggest picking up a paint like Dioxazine Purple to broaden your palette and make some that color more brilliant. Especially if you feel like you’re lacking that color. Dioxazine is very royal, almost like an amethyst.

@@MalMakes Thanks a lot for your explanation, Mal! I was thinking it was something I wasn't doing right, but there's more to it than I thought. I'll check out your suggestion!
Can we use ultramarine blue?
@MalMakes
3 жыл бұрын
Ultramarine is very violet for a blue and won't mix as cleanly. Phthalo Blue (green shade) is much closer to Cyan/Blue. Hope that helps~
Just here for class
My teacher didn't explain it this well dang dude
so when you are making your tircerary colors are they still half of one color and half of the other color?
@MalMakes
4 жыл бұрын
When I have my secondary colors already mixed - yes! Sometimes I'll mix two primaries in a 3:1 to get my color :)
I don't know if it's just my eyes, but the "true" orange always looks like a red-orange to me, and the yellow-orange looks like a normal orange color. The differences between the actual red-orange, red, and orange are very subtle to me. I'd rather have the spectrum be yellow, then another color between yellow-orange and yellow, then yellow-orange, then orange, then red.
@MalMakes

L1N3R1D3R I went a little to red on my orange mixing so that part is a little off. 😬
@L1N3R1D3R
4 жыл бұрын
Even with an equal amount of both colors, it always ends up more red than I'd like from my experimentation. I feel like a good orange color needs a little more yellow than red, but of course that's just my perspective. I'm sure the differences between the shades become more obvious under closer scrutiny, but to an untrained eye everything from true orange to red looks really similar.
Found you from a the smash bros thing
Wait... RYB actually works? I thought it was just a lie told to children
Who here bc there teacher tell them to watch this video😂
Music disturbing 😳
