Acrylic abstract with markmaking, oilpastels

Ойын-сауық

Acrylic abstract with markmaking. I love to paint with spatula, charcoal, oilpastels, chinamarkers and Derwent sticks or pencils. The next video will be with my new camcorder. I hope that the film will be better.

I was in suspense the entire video. I have been trying my hand at abstracts for the past month or so and markmaking is new to me. I never know what layer to apply things on because I am never certain what layer will be my last. Your process is different than others I have been watching. I enjoyed seeing your work progress, thanks for sharing.

Thank you very much for your kind words and your suggestion. It's true, every artist has to decide for himself when the picture is ready. That is a matter of taste. For me it is so that I feel very well for myself where I want to go and when the picture is finished for me and only for me. But I find it very exciting that you stopped earlier. Thank you for your words. KInd regards Conny

Beautiful. You manage to produce such a sense of depth in this picture, a feeling of space in a purely abstract piece. Great to see how the composition develops out of what, on the surface, appears to be a chaotic process. I would love to be able to paint with such freedom, allowing the image to grow naturally. Thank you.

Just for information: I'm working on an abstract painting online workshop that will probably be available by the end of March. In this course I paint 2 pictures from beginning to end and share all my thoughts and knowledge. There are also videos about mark making tools and color mixing. The course is for beginners as well as advanced. It's like you're sitting in my studio. i will offer a very cheap introductory price. More information will follow on this channel Best regards Conny

I am trying so hard to wrap my head around this. I really like it very much love your brush work and lines everything. I guess right now I’m a landscape/ figure painter and I would like to move in a direction like this. I studied cubist work many years ago but I don’t know if that really helps me relate. Right now I just don’t understand all the layers. So much goes down only to be completely covered. I guess my issue could be that as I work marks and line and color are meant to represent something so covering that up is foreign to me. I will watch this over and over until I understand. I hope.

Dear Tom, thank you for your words. I always start my pictures freely and intuitively; I do not know the fear of the empty screen. Everything that gives pleasure and has to be tried out, I somehow integrate into the picture. I experiment, let myself drift and see where my picture wants to take me. I paint free of rules, exclusively guided by feeling, expression, inspiration and bauble. The result is secondary; the way there an experience shaped by pure lust in painting. I try to admit everything and put the joy in the foreground. I need every layer, even if you don't see them at the end. I know they are all there. Try to paint without overthinkink too much. Hope that helps. Kind regards Conny

@@ConnyLehmann Sure. The particularities are variant. And I suppose, if one wants to say, abstract is about pushing the envelope as to what can be appreciated in complexity. You call it layering though. Is it layering when you might as well have just put white, or do the patterns of other tones behind play a part in the eventual tones?

Thank you very much for the kind words. I use at the begin charcoal, color black and Art graf, color ochre. Because they are watersolubile, they will smear with water. because I want this to be waterproof, I use an acrylic medium (in my case golden satin liquid) to incorporate both into my picture. After drying, the first layer of paint is water-resistant. The colors i used are Golden Quinacridon nickelazogold (this is the orange one) , Golden titanwhite, Golden carbonblack, Golden Indigo, Golden phtaloblue greenish. All the other colors are mixes of this. For example: when you mix the Golden phtaloblue greenish with the Golden Quinacridon nickelazogold and a little black, you will have the dark green i have used. Try to make various mixtures from the colors that I have listed. You will see that the result will be very beautiful. With black you will darken the colors, with the white you will lighten the colors or colormixes. At the end i use a black chinamarker for the scribbles. Then i use some brushes and spatulas. I hope that helps.if you have another question, please ask me. KInd regards Conny

While I loved the start of this painting, and the artist's mark making, and did not object to all the layering that seemed to go on forever, I do have to say that the end product is unfortunately like a hotel painting, nothing special, one of those abstracts you see a million times when traveling. There's is absolutely nothing unique about it. With this end, the long subtractive/additive process entailed seems both laborious and beside the point, merely an exercise in ego. But I guess whatever makes your boat float.
