Acoustic Levitation for All: Microgravity Experiments, Futuristic Displays, and Fun

At the 2018 Hackaday Belgrade confernce, Asier Marzo presented his work with Acoustic Levitation. It is a valuable tool of chemistry and bio-science. It can be used to manipulate physical pixels in a rudimentary display. And it's accessible enough to build on your own work bench.

You don't move stone rocks around by having 150 musician bang the drums. You do it by getting 10,000 people to chant OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHMMMMMMMMMMM at exactly the same low frequency. If you know anything about electricity you'd know the ohms are what opens the energy floodgates.

I wonder if this concept could be used to make nanobots using a magneto-optical phase array.

God spoke to form man from dust which means once they get it down it'll be the most efficient tool to manipulate and form matter 🙂

How's acoustic levitation work it spectroscopy works in a vacuum? I'm probably not thinking about it the right way

is this how they make bottle traps for antimatter, by using an electromagnetic phased array?

The viruses and bacteria and 3 x more violent or virulent? When being levitated? I haven't heard of microbiata being violent.

Why not use a tuning fork... And strike the pebble or rock? Or whatever object! Cause your own frequency vibration! And then put that into the antinodes!

In vacum dont work right? I mean trap particle in the wavelenght but in vacum. Because the wavelenght dont propagate and cant form the wavelenght. Let me know if you tryed this in vacumchamber. Thank you

Hi all, I wonder if anyone had thought of a cube or sphere shell big enough for a human to get inside made out of say 1000 x 1000 x 1000 acoustic transducers or as many as one would need, all pointing inwards to the center, open one side of it “the door” go in, close the door, turn it on and float around inside the acoustic cube/sphere, would that work? I bet it would! It would be like anti-gravity on earth! and I bet it would be fun!! if there is no harm to humans I want to be the first one to go in there and use it!!! there you go, I've just invented a new theme park ride!! Lol food for thought hey?! take care all and have a great day!

Could you print your own transducers directly into a PCB? They're basically just coils and film with a magnet, right? So perhaps a flexible PCB would do it. KZreadr "Carl Bugeja" has already been doing interesting things with printing coils directly into flexible PCBs, featured in a prev Hackaday video 4 weeks ago: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lYioj8V_oqynks4.html

Not likely, the output power of cheap piezoelectric transducers is like 1000 larger than PCB speakers. It is the same problem with regular speakers, they are not powerful enough.

@@UpnaLab As resonance and constructive interference starts to come into play given the scale we are able to produce PCBs it may be entirely possible to etch a fine structured board with multiple coils combining their power to focus just above the surface to get them on par with transducers or even more powerful. Using a similar setup as Photon Sieves except for sound manipulation of the wave front such that it focuses all the "Speakers" onto a point like a parabola would should be entirely doable.
