What a great story .. And what a wonderful instrument and sound ! The presenter sounds so passionate about it too ...makes me want to hear it played live one day !!!
Wow. I heard this bass in the 'Intimate Bach' concert recently. The tone reminds me of rich dark chocolate !
What a fabulous story. Nothing sounds like a Da Salo! Play it in good health.
This this is massive!
J’adore!
Gasparo da salo ......much more older that stradivarius .....
Why were machine tuners installed on such a historical and old instrument?

Jon Can probably to save it from the scrap heap a hundred years ago. 😉 People were a lot more utilitarian and less sentimental back then.

I believe that is an extension? It allows you to play the lower notes. And yes... it is very uncomfortable playing on these extensions even on a modern bass and yes... it is a bad idea adding those on an old instrument like this one....
It is too old to be played , it needs to be conserved in a collection private or public and what is that ugly thing on the top of the pegbox. It is not something to show off on rather to be used as a model for new instruments when it is gone it will be gone forever

“Too old to be played”, that’s the most ignorant comment I’ve seen today. This is why many fantastic instruments are left to rot in silence in museums over the world... And that “thing” on the peg box is a common C-extension. The fact that you didn’t even know that shows how little you know about string instruments and their purpose. 🙄

I agree about the extension! First it's absolutely uncomfortable playing on those and second yes they SHOULDN'T add this crap on an old and valuable instrument like this one....
