Achieving Maximum Frostiness: Insulating Our Freezer For Tropic Temperatures (MJ Sailing - Ep 325)

How we're insulating our freezer for tropical climates. Getting it OUT OF THE GALLEY for starters!
First, coming back from the Max Cruise yard with us is a bunch of metal work that we have hired Max Cruise to do for us. (If you remember the year we waited for our compression post from a local guy, you'll understand why we went this route.) We had no idea what parts would be making their way back with us, we just told them to load two boxes with a max of 23 kg each.
Join in with us as we dive into this box of goodies and see what parts we can start adding to the build right away.
Then we back up to a project Matt did a few months ago, of adding our white oak wood trim to the edges of the galley counters. We used a flexible epoxy to put them in place, and Matt had been so careful to get everything aligned properly so that each piece of trim was flush with the existing structure. Too bad there was one part of it he didn't take into account...
And lastly, we begin work on moving our Vitrifrigo freezer out of the galley and into the salon. The two main reason for this are to open up space in the galley for items we'll be using more often, and to also give more room to the freezer in its new place to add extra insulation.
Although the freezer does come with a bit of insulation already, we didn't think it would stand up well to tropical temperatures, or let us get the deep freeze we want for storing meats for a long period of time. By moving it under the settee in the salon, we can fit out the space with an extra 2 inches (5 cm) of insulation to each side as well as the bottom.
Once we get our order from TotalBoat in, we'll also be adding a 2 part expanding foam to fill in the cracks.
We hope you enjoy our look back into boat work! Tell us what you think of the freezer placement! We can't take full credit for the idea though, we first learned about it from Delos when we were getting a tour of their boat, lol.
We hope you enjoy!

    Before you install your insulation make sure you put an external vapour seal around the exterior of the box to stop moisture entering and soaking your insulation. Look up vapour sealing freezer insulation, this can really affect your freezers future performance.

I personally love the build and know theres always something happening for you. Your not taking too much time off and when you do your technically still working with as you've stated boat shows, regattas etc aswell as filming for us. Well done thus far. Thanks for the show . Something to consider is that black anodizing will wear off quite quickly on anything that is used regularly and any damage scratches will show through silver. Not that these things don't show on clear anodizing, but is much less obvious...

    Unlike the aluminum (~80 GPa) bits, that stainless steel (~210 GPa) chain plate is substantially stiffer than the fiberglass (~70 GPa) hull that you'll be connecting it to. Have you considered laminating a bunch of mid-modulus carbon fiber (~200-300 GPa) into the hull around the chain plate to spread that load out over a few meters? This is one of the few good applications for carbon fiber in a cruising sailboat.

    Every fraction of an inch of insulation will have enormous payback... ...we used a small RV bathtub, with a box around it and cushion on top... The cushion was 4-inches thick, and all aroud the tub was like 6-inches of spray foam, and "my God" we use to joke it seemed to make more ice then we started with... 3-day weekends on the Colorado River, (desert), and the ice was still solid as a rock....would still have lots of ice after a week!!! ...of course, it was rarely opened, too.

The temp sensor was still showing an internal temp of 25f two days later - it was in the upper 60s outside. Much better than I thought it would be. But the real test will be when we're out and its in the 90s inside the boat

  • @MJSailing

    @MJSailing

    2 ай бұрын

    We used that kreg pocket joint on our previous boat's wood interior. But these foam panels - where the hardwood is being attached - have zero screw holding ability. Were we to build another boat like this, I'd make hardwood face frames and just attach the entire thing around the perimeter. It would add some weight, but would cut down on build time significantly

    Wow 😳 I guess this is a build-a-boat-by-owner reality check. I’ve been away from your channel for quite a long time, probably about two years now. I used to love watching your sailing videos, but then, after patiently watching you spend two years rebuilding your aluminum sailboat into an absolute beauty, and getting going with sailing her, you then decided to sell that boat and do it all again with this catamaran kit. That was back in November 2020. It’s now three years and four months later, and it looks like you have not even started the details of the interior of your Cat yet. Do you remember what you told all your viewers in one of your videos, right after you finally finished the work on your aluminum monohull, which you had purchased for $20,000 unseen, and which finally cost you $98,000 in total? You told us that you would never do that again. And yet here you are 😄 I have to hand it to you, your tenacity and determination to get this completed, is quite inspiring. Other people are telling you to stop taking so many breaks and just work work work, but I could see how that could lead to absolute burnout very soon, as it does for so many would-be self-build yachties, who end up with a giant empty hull in their backyards that never gets completed. I hope you can get some help and get this cat finished soon, before you clock up another two or three years of your lives working on it. And I hope that at the end of this absolute marathon project, you don’t end up telling us all the same thing that you said after you had finished Elements 😁 Wishing you all the best, cheers!

    For freezers or fridges that are hidden and not accessed much they make small temp sensors that has displays to read the temp. You drill a small hole in the side, not thru the coils, for a sensor and seal with foam. You then have a display mounted somewhere in the galley. This keeps you from having food go bad and the only way you know it is smell.

  • @MJSailing

    @MJSailing

    We have to use a separate thermostat on this freezer since the OEM one only goes to 10f and we want -5f or so when needing a good deep freeze. This will be mounted in the galley. But there are battery sensors with remote alarms available that can alert if the freeze/fridge go above a certain temp.

    The compressor is a standard Danfoss and separate from the freezer. The evap plate is integrated, but I haven't seen those fail unless punctured - which would be difficult since it's under the plastic liner of this freezer. But even if it does break, it's simple enough to add a new plate internally.

    Matt, on the drop in freezer, the added squirt in foam won't add much to insulative objectives. Do make add the extra box surrounding and seal that airtight. The gaps between inner freezer and outside box only need a dab of foam at bottom corners to support weight and avoid squeaks from it wiggling.. At top flange just use some slivers or wedges of foam there, securing it so it that seals air there... Eventually it will need service or replacement, right ? If you glue it in place all around, it's STUCK...

    The pour foam is R6, so right in line with the other foam. The compressor is a standard Danfoss, so easy to replace, and the evaporator plate is built into the system. If that needs a replacement - though I'm not sure why it would since it won't get punctured, a simple drop in plate will work fine.

  • @scoutjonas

These builds take time, especially when we're up against projects we're unfamiliar with or haven't done dozens of times previously, like some other at home builders. And I'm not sure how dragging out the build would make us more money from KZread? Since the videos of us sailing the boat will probable get higher views than we are currently - and more views = more $$.
