Isn't making it PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) a pain though?

Go ahead and link to the lenses and parts needed to make a thermal camera see clearly at 12km.

Not really. Thermal imaging is has vastly different optic materials and sensors and they are extremely expensive, for the visible spectrum they use a fujinon SX1600 camera which has a 110mm aperture and superb optics capable of covering a sensor up to 1.1" and being able to work properly at a wavelength up to 980nm with the visible cut filter and having no significant spherical aberration it also has an amazing image stabilizer. The nikon p900 has a 70mm aperture and has a tiny 1/2.3" sensor, the smaller aperture alone makes it impossible for the p900 to see as much details as this camera, there are cameras that use higher end fujinon zoom lenses. What is funny is that most of this companies only purchase modules from different companies cobble them together onto their own enclosures and PTZ mechanism and then sell it for upwards of 100k for the low end models. All the cameras look almost identical and have similar specs, the control software seems to be were they differ somewhat. Not sure were they get the thermal imaging hardware though, if I remember correctly from an asian military supplier.
