Yes, I'm a little biased however, many of my accounting peers transition into finance seamlessly, and in my experience, I've never seen anyone from finance transition into accounting. In finance you take portfolio management instead of the advanced accounting class. People in my country recommended me to get a finance degree so that's what I'm gonna do. Great summary Shane. After an Accounting degree, getting my CPA, and 16 years in controllership. I found one major difference is inside knowledge. Compared to my FP&A counterparts, they come to me to understand the nature of customer agreements, treatment of special items, margin impact, COGS, etc. Put differently, this is just me here, but Accounting set me up to be able to do both my job and theirs, while they would have a very tough time doing my job. It's a slight over simplification, but it's mostly true for experienced accountants.

If you get into an ivy league or other investment banking target school then major in finance. If you are going to a regular state school or non target private school then major in Accounting. Also with accounting you have an actual skill that you can easily use to open your own accounting business and there is no limit to how much money you can make there. If you major in finance from a non target school you can easily end up selling insurance for barely above minimum wage whereas accounting assures a much higher than average income. Also 95% of financial professionals cannot beat the s&p 500 index so if the point is to predict the future of the market then they are overwhelmingly failing.

Accounting tracks the money and provides snapshots ( reports ) of what the financial situation is, in a moment in time. Finance takes those reports and makes predictions, projections, analysis, and decisions about how to manage the money. Finance has more range and flexibility. A person in finance learns how to make wealth, save wealth, and protect wealth in the overall financial system. Do you want to crunch numbers and generate reports? Or do you want to know how money works and actively participate in generating wealth?

As someone with a finance degree, I needed to also get two more majors (cs and math) to actually do something with it. Imo, much of finance is moving to STEM and if you don’t have that background you will be pushed out. Accounting gives you an actual skill that won’t be automated away as quickly as monkeys inputting data into excel to do a simple discounted cash flow model. Additionally, many people on Wall Street have accounting backgrounds, including many investment bankers and other financial professionals. Accounting is a clear winner imo because of flexibility, more job opportunities, and still being able to break into Wall Street while not worrying if your whole profession will disappear overnight. If you want to break into Wall Street though, I recommend doing a computer science and statistics double major. Quants are the future of Wall Street and those are the two skills necessary to break into the space. Quants also have more flexibility and imo have a better work culture.

Dude , a quant is a computer programmer and not a financial analyst . I don't think that just for understanding finance , you have to go through all the course of a computer scientist . The code which is constructed by quants can be used by financial analysts to understand the market but for that you don't have to waste your time to understand the ABCD of that code . You can still utilize all that stuff without going deep into it .

@@ayanpandeydpsn-std9005 calm down a quant can be both. in fact, it is good if a quant has a good understanding of both. I personally believe a lot of new quants will die out with the mentality of ''it's the numbers stupid'' and not grasping the fact that a lot of what happens in the market is human emotion at a macro scale which always affects the numbers. Eventually I will have to dive full time into this world (still learning) and talking to some of the younger people in quant is kinda annoying lol the people giving you the money have a broader view and track record and you should also learn from them.

Yea another thing about these degrees is that if you DON'T make it to the big time making a bazillion bucks (assuming you have that ambition) then what you will end up doing is working a great job anyway. So you might not make half a million every year at a hedge fund or in private equity but you will make $100k or so as an investment manager or something, and as you gain more and more experience your chances of getting into one of the super lucrative jobs goes up not down so you might at any time break into the huge money if you keep pressing for it. Also you can get a CFA certification after graduating, which will open up the world of finance to you. In accounting you can also become a lead accountant for a major corporation and make piles of cash that way and you can get a CPA which is the accounting analog to the CFA. Here's another option for you: get a bachelor's in accounting and then pick up an MBA with a specialization in finance. In this way with an MBA you also become qualified for management roles in any random corporation. Oh and here's another good option: get a bachelor's in engineering and then pick up an MBA that is a mix of management, accounting, and finance. You'll make piles of money that way because engineering companies are rich and if you have knowledge of engineering AND how to run the business of the company, you'll shoot straight to the top. Lots of great options, kids. STEM is always a winner except S unless S is also combined with TEM.

@@introvertdude99 yup that's a good combination. you see, it's all about options. for instance you might find yourself in a finance job that doesn't use comp sci at all but then later you might get a new job that uses both or possibly you'll be offered a comp sci job that isn't even finance but they need coders so bad they'll pay you 100 grand to take it right now. see my point? this is just a personal preference, but if i were in school and young and capable of doing it, I'd go all the way through a masters with every class i took being marketable because let's suppose you walked out of school with statistics, finance, computer science, MBA, accounting, etc. then you will have lifelong access to ALL JOBS everywhere! Talk about career security, and because you'd have so much versatility and expertise, whenever there was an opportunity for career advancement you could take it. You would never have to worry about being laid off or fired and if you were no problem jobs for you would be like low hanging fruit everywhere. You could be employed the very next day and probably get a huge salary bump. @@bharatsadhnani4370 Depends what roles you’re looking at … if you’re looking at financial accounting/ audit they’re going to have that as a requirement. Even some PE roles will have ACCA as a requirement but the bottom line is that these jobs will tend to be very accounting heavy so an accounting qualification is more relevant for them than a finance one. I’m not sure what country or what role you’re looking for work in but figure out the exact role you want and decide from there. If you need an accounting qualification for your dream job by all means prioritise that over the CFA. The CFA is targeted more at Equity Research or Portfolio Management type roles.

I’ve done lots of accounting minors already so I’m probably going to switch to an accounting course next year and do my final 2 years of uni. My goal is to start doing some freelance accounting online during my final year of study and use that experience to help write my thesis and help me get a job once I graduate or even start up my own freelance accounting firm.

i would rethink that perception of economics. understanding how businesses and the economy work is very valuable. for example i was an actuarial regulator for a time and economies of scale was a recurring theme because large insurance companies could keep their expenses as a percentage of premium low and this explained the nationwide trend of smaller insurers going out of business. another issue was CPI and how it was constructed, and the U-3 and U-6 unemployment rates, and the difference between systemic and systematic economic volatility. All these things have proven to be conceptually useful to understand what I am doing on the job. Finance is like running the numbers and operating the machine but econ is like understanding how the machine works. You need both.

lots of permutations that work well when combining these degrees. For example, a double major is a solid option but if you do this then I recommend getting a bachelor in 1 and a master's in the other because master's degree will unlock more career opportunities over the long run. If you get an accounting degree then I recommend picking up a minor in finance and likewise if you get a finance degree then I recommend picking up an accounting minor. The reason is that in a finance job you will find some accounting knowledge useful and similarly in an accounting job you will find some finance knowledge useful. The reason is that as a general rule the accountants hand off the baton of their work to the finance people so there's always some overlap. Then again there are many finance jobs where they use a ton of accounting because of something called Fundamental Analysis which means that if you want to value a stock then the most granular way of doing that is by opening the accounting books to look at the company "fundamentals". Market perceptions of a company's stock will fluctuate because of investor herd mentality but over the long term the valuation of a stock will return to its fundamentals. See why accounting and finance are like two sides of the same coin? And job titles in these fields are often admixtures of both fields, so the more of both you have the better. You'll have excellent job prospects with these fields.

I’m a finance major senior and these are my thoughts so far. There’s more money in finance but more work life balance in accounting. Basic accounting is a pre requisite for finance (financial statements). Accounting is more about technically sound and finance is more data analysis. You can get accounting jobs in finance,(ex: myself and most of my finance friends did an internship in audit), but I’m sure its vice versa also. Accounting is for more reserved family people. Finance is for ambitions, I’m gonna do what it takes to be rich, professionals. Both amazing careers!

I’ve worked both fields. I find accounting jobs boring!! Finance jobs keep me engaged. If you like order, rules, and repetitive structure go the accounting way. Personally, that’s not me. Finance requires more critical thinking.

As an accountant I do not agree with this simplistic take that accounting = past and finance = future. Accountants do both. We report information from the past, but we use that information to strategise for the future. Budgeting is a classic example of this

My bachelors in finance has gotten me no jobs other than “financial planner” which is NOT stable, and is hierarchical and you really don’t make money unless you work over 40 hour weeks… I wish I had gotten accounting degree in regards to business but if I could do college all over again I’d definitely go IT.

@cobrokers1717 wgu is cheaper, faster, and better. They accept the most transfer credits and some people from wgu have been hired at a big 4 firm according to wgu grads

@@SupremeJarJar It may be cheaper and faster but it's definitely not better. I'm not saying WGU is bad, but a fully online school is never going to be better than an actual state school.

I go to a Top 10 business school, should I major in Business-Finance? Or Accounting. It's a target school for finance,Accounting, and consulting, but the accounting degree is longer than Business-Finance, and I will graduate a semester late if I major in accounting than the other way around.
