Acclaimed author, Plum Sykes in her ‘Beatrix Potter fantasy Garden’

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Plum Sykes’s garden is quite different to the gardens in ‘Wives Like Us’, her new novel. This novel, which is ‘wickedly smart, so effortless, so chic and hilarious’ - is a satire on the lives of the Chipping Norton set.
Plum explains to Bunny what sort of garden the inhabitants of the novel aspire to, and shows you around her own garden, which she has created in the last few years. She extols the virtue of having discovered Plant Wholesalers for her wild flower plugs, that she has recently planted in her flower meadow.
Plum and Bunny also discuss the correlation between fashion styles and garden styles and how New Yorkers are different from Brits. For a longer version of their chat listen to the podcast ‘Bunny in the Garden with Plum Sykes’.
For a longer interview, check out Season 1, Episode 20, of Bunny Guinness’s podcast ‘Bunny in the Garden with…’. Available now on Apple podcasts, Spotify and many more…

Plum has a beautiful garden. When she hears back the interview, she will probably be kicking herself for all the times she said, Yes, Yeah.. and for all the times she spoke across Bunny. Despite this, I enjoyed the interview.

I agree, she may have been very nervous to be interviewed...or she may be 1/2 American:). I detest hot tubs in a garden.

I loved the chemistry between the both of you--- it comes across as two longtime friends catching up. The last conversation about the 'American gardening aesthetic' is so true. I really appreciated the insight of both of you, thanks.

I hope Plum has seen true country American gardens when she is in America. Those in the Hamptons are such a tiny part of the gardens here. I think I started following you Bunny because your books and your gardens never seemed stuffy and were so full of nature. The first Chelsea garden that we all in this family fell in love with! The Wind in the Willows. ❤

This location goes way beyond a 'pleasing aspect', lol. I like the balance of plants versus space, and the architectural feeling from the stone walls, large trees, hedges, and topiary. Those of you with stone houses have the benefit of anchoring your climbers and letting them grow for decades. Here in the U.S. most homes are painted stucco or wood siding, so it all must come down for painting, etc. It was interesting to hear how the addition of umber to the window paint color changed it from cold to warm; works perfectly with the stone. Without seeing the property from below, it's hard to tell, but the wall containing the back terrace seems to work like a ha ha; unobstructed views, and unwanted people or animals kept out. The horses looked like they enjoyed their camera time. :)

What are the silver plants in the lead effect square planters at 23.21 in the video please ? There is actually an awful lot to learn in this video, especially if you watch it twice. The first time I was wondering more about the different lifestyles people lead, which is interesting in itself. Thank you

American woman here with fashion design degree and worked in the industry. Also lived in Highland Park, Dallas, mid-80s -- the mecca of women with new money who would be horrified if judged by her peers, with sneer, as "quirky" or "looks British". Translation: frumpy. The McDonalds in HP, Dallas, was where you'd find the monied mean girls taking their kids for the ball pit while they are seen, blonde bobs, perfectly made up, in their latest monochromatic cotton velour jacket and pants jogging suits.

Well, the 80's were a difficult time. Plus, I imagine the ladies of Dallas felt they had an image to uphold, with the program "Dallas" being shown all over the world. 😊

I really don't get this: if it is so supremely cool, laid-back and aloof from small-minded notions of neatness not to seal the joints in your paving, then why meticulously strip your paving of all its weed-infested glory when the lifestyle-magazine cameras turn up?

I don't know why people feel they must say something unkind. It is a personality trait I'm sure. I always think something bad is going to happen. I am definitely not a glass half full kind of person. But I do believe there are people who just must criticise and they are not at ease until they do! There are those who just want the best for people and those that just can't stand that proposition. I find the human mind and behaviours fascinating and wish to understand them better.

Hot tubs are fine if you have staff to look after them and clean them. No, it's not good to interupt and keep your sunglasses on during an interview in April (unless you have health problems.)
