The PS2 didn't use OpenGL (well, "PS2GL" was a thing, but not something that AAA games used.) RenderWare would have dealt with the hardware at a much lower level than that. You're otherwise spot on about the porting situation though. I can understand some minor differences but can't forgive the lack of colour tinting in LS! It massively changes the look and feel.

Ah sorry I must've misremembered what rendering api stuff they had back then, was it PS3 that used OpenGL?
@fake12396
2 ай бұрын
Yep PS2's graphics 'API' was just bare metal, was a fun time to be a graphics programmer, especially if you got into using the VUs and stuff. PS3 had a low level API called GCM, there was a kinda-OpenGL-but-not-really layer on top of it called PSGL, pretty much nobody used it though because it was broken and too slow anyway

gta sa on pc is a very bad port. no car refeltions, missing purple sky and orange tint, missing cutscenes and map props, broken lighting, and so on. also the textures may be higher res but has color artifacts

is there a way to port back all of these visuals to the pc version ?
Really fond of the new video format, Josh. While watching the VOD itself is great, a condensed version of a speedrun is also very welcome.
Actually releasing such a huge and complex game as GTA: SA on a PS2 is really, really impressive

@@Zeroaku That's how it's supposed to be tho! The developers tried to get EVERY single bit of performance for extra content. Today you can't even play most games with 60+fps, without using DLSS or something like this, because they get lazy and no time, because time would be less money for the CEO and the sponsors.

Imagine running this game for so long that you just casually beat PS2 WR without trying much lol, much love josh!
My dopamine starved brain really likes the new edited videos. I prefer uncut unedited content for DYOMs, but for speedruns this type of content works much better. If I had one advice, the cuts after a highlight moment should be a bit delayed. Let the scene linger on for a bit longer before you cut to the next one. Otherwise it kinda gives similar vibes to "cut scream compilations", at least for me.
@Joshimuz

In the past when I edited I used to leave way too much before and after clips, it took me a long time to get the hang of cutting things shorter to the point where people wouldn't complain about it, and now I've finally achieved the opposite ahahah. I did try reaaallllyyy hard to cut this down as short as possible where the original video was so long, so yeah I've probably over done it a bit.

Was having such a depressing day at work but I’m so glad you posted this. Time to watch while eating dinner! Also Josh edit??? Heck yeah!

Brilliant video josh! GG
Been doing and watching only SA Any% for so long that actually watching Josh do the final chase feels kinda weird. Also, seeing the game this blurry and pixelated brings back memories from way way back when I had just started watching speedruns for this game. Unreal. Love the edited cut-down version of this, still gonna watch the vods and full length but this is certainly appreciated for when I have less time. Cheers Josho x
Seeing Josh get to play this the way i grew up with it is great.
This is how I experienced GTASA for the first time. Playing it on pC afterwards it didn't feel too different graphically. It is only when you go back, that you really appreciate the difference. Damn I feel old rn... Anyway, thanks Josh for bringing back these nostalgic feelings.

I will be turning 24 this month. To think that it's been over 10-15 years since I had a PS2 and original XBOX. This brought back some good memories of those days, still wish I I owned the consoles. PS2 disc reader stop working, and I don't remember what happen to the XBOX, but it probably stop working in one way or another. Good editing, and can't wait to see what else you do with the PS2!

Bro the ps2 released in 2000 and the ps3 released in 2006. For Xbox its the same, the original xbox came out in 2001 and the xbox 360 released in 2005. It has not been 10-15 years since it released, its been about 24 years. Did you get one of these consoles gifted as a 10-15 year old when they were already over a decade old or are you lying for some reason, since you were literally BORN when these consoles came out?
Top 10 shocking anime moments of 2024.
Would like to watch you do a 100% completion playthrough😊
Good luck with the new edited content! I liked the pacing and the smooth cuts. There was a couple of times where you showed a failed attempt of a mission and then didn't show the successful attempt, like with On the Wrong Side of the Tracks, and I was expecting to see the successful attmept. A section doesn't feel finished because of that. But I also understand that you need to edit 7+ hours of footage down to a watchable 40-50 minutes, lol. Anyways, best of luck with the channel.
Yo, this editing is great.

I do love the lightning and have always loved the PS2 version as that was my childhood version of San Andreas that I always played but man.. Always did notice that heavy rain like at 16:03 makes it look like there's static across the screen
Just wanna say this new format already seems amazing. As much as I love watching long runs, seeing it being condemned into 40 minutes of just pure entertainment is so much better imo
GG! It's nice to hear that you enjoy this version of the game and might play more of it. I have many questions. Perhaps you have already addressed them in the full video which you conveniently linked. I'll check that out!
Hell yeah, more SA PS2 content please 🙏
Congratulations 👍
good run! how did you get the controller overlay to work while using a real ps2? i found this thing called munia but its been sold out for a long time.
I feel good now, like a viewer reborn
now, that these are going to be edited, I dont't have to be scared from watching the stream, and I don't have to watch these at 2 times speed to save time IRL
Little tip for driving bikes with a gamepad - pushing the stick just ~75% forward is faster, than trying to replicate tapping "Lean Forward" button on PC - this way CJ kinda "crouches" on the bike and it's faster, than quickly flicking it forward over and over, and it's also way easier on the finger :D I really liked the editing, hope to see this kind of stuff more ;)
@Joshimuz
2 ай бұрын
Yeah I know, it's just habit to flick the stick ahahah, I need to get used to holding that angle on the joystick.
josh playing underground 2 would be hype
god the minigun sounds so good and bassy, wonder if theres a mod that ports ps2 weapon audio to pc
How was it? Different... Maybe one bit of feedback: Personally, I don't like the zooming in on stuff. It throws me off way more than it helps me to find what to look for. Especially when chat suddenly spans the whole screen. Otherwise: Nice cut! Pacing seemed good, maybe just a little bit to hectic here or there. But a very solid start to edited content, keep it up!
God the ps2 version looks so good, not even 2dfx can replicate all the shader details
Finally, edited content!
I really like the shortened video showcasing most of the highlights. I wouldn't watch a full run otherwise.
Man I love the ps2 version of SA, the colours and atmosphere are so much better imo
I will watch this AND the uncut version fully
One amazing speedrun again Josh, also new to me that you use actual ps2 for that :D amazing haha. What did you use or recommend to record on such an old system ? especially that smooth. Btw something that im not sure you care about, but you are right PS2 is superior and better version, graphics arent actually pixaleted if you use a an original component PS2 cable it looks stunning and almost none pixelation and its pretty crisp as well + vibrant colors.
barely related but it's still insane to me that one of the games that shaped my childhood arguably the most (even though I was 2 years old when it came out lol) is turning 20 years old this year, hopefully they can manage to get the vr version of gta sa out sometime this year in commemoration of it, being able to go through such an influential game in vr sounds really fun, especially if there are first person cutscenes too, hopefully.
The note to the editor: Just cut it man. Don't fade in/out instead of a cut. Fades have a meaning to it, don't just misuse them please!!

I spent a good chunk of my childhood playing the 2-player mode on PS2. I think we used to have either the aggressive NPCs cheat and/or the riot cheat along with NPCs having weapons and we just used to try to survive for as long as possible, it was so much fun. Frustrating part about the multiplayer was that you had to stay very close to each other and only one person could drive at a time, but it's pretty understandable that the game wouldn't have been able to handle anything more
30:01 congratulations Josh you haven't been in first place in a longgg time

Legendary.
This was perfect ☺️
11:13 The auto aim is INCREDIBLE, in the PS2 version, especially if you scroll between multiple enemies (L2 & R2) fast while still shooting. It’ll stun them & keep them from getting too many shots onto you.
The PS2 version looks so nice. I still remember the grass making the game running slower in some areas, ps2 dropping frames like crazy :D. The weather system was so complex and the colors were really nice compared to the PC version.
GTA SA without that orange look feels wrong, even to this day.
GTA SA on ps2 has a different feeling
18:25 - Great quotes said by great streamers.
What video output are you using?, it look pretty good, components cable, or ps2 to hdmi adapter?

Lol camera control is overrated I guess
rare CJ shooting voicelines
If you can maybe you should try the NTSC version, the picture may look better, it runs at 30fps and it doesn’t have upscale (448->512) artifacts (kind of horizontal lines, for exemple on the minimap, you can tell it’s not perfectly round there is some kind of stairs effect)
7:24 Wow never seen this strat
6:50 it was also probably on a CRT back then and removing the fuzz is usually unkind to visual design.
I LOVE YOU JOSH!!!
a correction on the graphical toolset, the games built in renderware, ps2 doesnt support opengl last time i modded a ps2 there was nothing based on opengl api on the ps2, its the graphics api the ps2 had was better, but the xbox was iirc stronger, direct x was brand new still so no one really knew how to make use of it, hence why the pc/xbox ports look barren and sometimes graphical glitches happen, but yeah pretty sure it wasnt using opengl, rockstar just knew how to developer for the ps2 at the time. a little research shows modders made a opengl like api for the playstation 2, which confirms the ps2 doesnt use opengl.
