Accessory Power, Emergency & Off-Grid Power while on the Road - Can-Am Spyder RT

This video shows accessory power that comes on the Can-Am Spyder RT, and accessory power that can be added to the Spyder. I also carry Emergency Power in the event of a dead battery, or a flat tire. I also carry an Eco-Flow River Pro Power Station to handle the needs of charging my gear while off-grid.

Thanks for the shout-out, my friend. The things you learn on the Spyder Wayne KZread channel. I have the same 12Volt docking station as you do and my intention was to use the "cigarette lighter" plug was for my air compressor as well. Never used that, but I thought it would work. No worries, though. I have a pigtail extension with a 12-volt female so I can use the power, straight from the battery. I can still use the docking station plug to power my hand-held CB for my Goldwing buddy rides. (They still use CB radios) Old technology but still fits the bill with multiple riders.

I also have the battery tender on my Spyder RT and have a SAE plug to cigarette lighter adapter that plugs into the tender plug on the bike, and runs my air compressor for tire filling, routine or after plugging a tire. The tender plugs usually have a heavier flow capacity to charge the battery, and therefore allow the higher amp out to handle the compressor demand.

Having a hitch and trailer (pop-up camper or a cargo trailer) allows you to bring pretty much everything you could want to bring with you when traveling. My first Spyder, I installed an aftermarket hitch & wiring harness myself. It was a lot of work, but it did the job. This Spyder, I got the dealer to install the BRP hitch and wiring harness, and it is significantly better quality. It costs more, but it is worth it. Thanks, Richard 😁👍

I went with the Lamonster Power Plate that is wired directly to the battery thru their fused wiring harness and your 12 v. and USB sockets are hot all the time. I kept the factory SAE harness in the Frunk but I use the 12 V socket on the handle bars for my battery maintainer. Thanks for the links! I'm definitely going to get the wing bolts for the battery cover and the 30 amp to 15 A adaptor for campgrounds... Good luck on your camping trip and safe travels! All the best!

Very timely advice Wayne, because my docking station has just arrived in France and should be with me in a couple of days. Like everyone else, I got it to have the 12v cigarette lighter because Can-Am bizarrely (in my view) don't supply one, and my old tyre pump has a cigarette style plug. So good to know that it won't work BEFORE I have to find out the hard way 😂. I ended up buying a nifty little compressor that you don't have to plug in, but which charges via a USBc cable, so it can be charging up in the trunk ready to be used when necessary. I'm not too upset about the 12v socket because I really wanted the docking station for the RAM mount ball, as I don't like my GPS on the handlebars (looks ugly in my opinion). Anyway enough rambling, just wanted to say Brilliant Video as ever - well done yet again 👍

I got a kick out of your musical selection for your eclipse video (especially the timing of the "lunatic in the grass" line with your drone lifting off from the grass). I am hoping to it lasts a long time. It was great to hear about the newer models recycle life. I have had to send one of my giant ones (Delta max) back 2x's to be replaced since when I went to use it, it would not turn on. The smaller ones have never given me an issue. The BRP branded Zumo has its own docking station on the handlebars right where your accessory USB/12V power port adapter goes. Surprised some clever engineer hasn't come up with a way to have both the BRP GPS AND a power adapter. And its a bummer that the BRP branded Zumo won't connect to the BRP Connect system via bluetooth. You have to have a helmet communicator to get that task done. BRP so way ahead of the pack in some areas and so far behind in others.

Wayne, commenting here because I can’t figure out how to send an email through KZread. I’m searching for one of your videos, or a comment you made on one of mine, where you mention the accessory USB/12V charger and how when you first installed it you blew a fuse. My dealer installed mine, and when I tried to use the 12V charger for my compressor, the same thing must have happened. Now neither charger works. I’m going in for my first service next week and would like to explain to them what you ended up doing to fix it. Any input would be much appreciated. Chris

Hi Chris - I talk about the problem I had, in this video (the video where you just posted your comment). At the 7:00 minute mark in this video, I talk about the blown 5 amp fuse in the right front fuse box in the frunk. To fix the blown fuse, I pulled out the blown fuse from position 6, and replaced it with a 5 amp spare fuse that is inside the lid of the inner fuse box. I concluded in this video that I can NOT use the 12 volt cig lighter plug on the docking station with my air compressor. To solve that problem, I came up with an alternative method, which I explained at about 9:20 mark in this video, where I talk about emergency power. I bought a jump starter kit so that I can jump start my battery if needed. That kit came with a 12 volt cig lighter adapter plug that works fine with my air compressor, and I did test it. I hope this helps 👍
