I agree that Jade City and Nettle and Bones are strong starter books. I would also recommend: Kindred (Octavia E. Butler) The Monsters We Defy (Leslye Penelope)
On the Fairy Tale category I would recommend The Bear and the Nightingale. The Russian names of the characters are a bit confusing at first. But the story is amazing. Also it's a triology.
The Justice of kings is a good fantasy for beginners and is very easy to follow along with. I'm a beginner when it comes to adult fantasy myself and this book made it so easy to get into adult fantasy. Since it adds new elements of the story slowly and it doesn't have to many character pov's to follow at once.

I heard of this book. I want to find a series that is super easy to understand and follow the world building and magic system because I have not tried adult fantasy. I read a YA series which was my first (I am a mystery and thriller reader) and I kind of like it because I thought YA is easier to understand the magic system so it can eased me into adult fantasy. What I don't like about fantasy series is that you have to wait for every book to be released.
I'm so lame I always draw a blank when people want my recommendations.

If I like a book or book series before I "move on" I buy a hard copy (or two) that I can give out when people ask me what I would recommend. The only known error I've made was when I gave my Mom "The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches" and she was offended by all the use of "profanity" ...to which I was like 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 and she said "I know I say those things, but I'm trying to cut back and books shouldn't encourage such casual use of swear-words!" So I'm giving her ALL the Skyward series... we'll see how she likes the word "Scud!" 😂😂😂😂

His Dark Materials and Shannara anything.. I was a voracious reader grades 4-11 of everything but fantasy. Picked these two series up that year and fantasy is 90% of what I’ve read these 20 yrs since. Maybe these will do that for one of you too
Magician's Daughter is such a fun read! Love the hair btw🥰 So cute!
I can’t agree more with Kaikeyi! Loved it! For me a great beginners book is Emperor’s Soul by Sanderson or Stardust by Neil Gaiman 🥹
Warbreaker was the first adult fantasy I ever read and I was so obsessed. It got me hooked on Sanderson. I actually did not like mistborn except for the first book. I LOVEEEE Stormlight archive though!! It’s my favourite

Is stormlight complex? I know how beloved the series is but I don't want to be lost reading it.
I just bought a physical copy of The Witch's Heart this past weekend because I lived it so much when I listened to the audiobook from my library.
Y’all the The Magicians Daughter is soooooooooo good!!
For anybody who has watched Game of thrones/ House of the Dragon. I would recommend the 'Blade Itself' by Joe Abercrombie. You spend a lot of time with the characters in this book and are getting fed information bit by bit which makes it accessible for newbies.
It's from way back in the 80's but the Belgariad by David Eddings was the second fantasy series I ever read (after the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant). It's nothing innovative or sophisticated but it's a fun, classic fantasy story with great characters that would make a good first fantasy read.
Hello, I stopped watching a lot of other booktubers, but I am a super fan of your channel. I love fantasy recs. Thank you for this video. Have a blessed day!
For mythology retellings I couldn’t recommend Circe by Madeline Miller enough. It’s a favourite of mine. Similarly Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman is also good. ANY book by Charlie N. Holmberg is a good bet for YA fantasy too with really interesting takes on magic systems. I’d particularly recommend The Paper Magician series if you want a longer series, or the Spellbreaker/Spellmaker duology for something shorter to start with. If you want something along the lines of a Sarah J Mass, then look to Kristin Cashore’s books of Graceling, Bitterblue, and Fire. Finally, for a stand-alone fantasy romance with a heavy emphasis on description and world building then The Night Circus. It’s such a good read for autumn though because it has that dark, mysterious, Victorian feel to it.
I feel like the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik is perfect for historical fiction fans since it's alternate history! Plus is also has the most adorable animal companions
I highly recommend Elements of Cadence Duology by Rebecca Ross. It's her first 'Adult' fantasy and it's lovely. It's not super heavy, it's quick to finish and if anyone is into Scottish/Irish vibes with a touch of magic, this is the book. There are multiple PoV's in third person and the romance is there but a nice sidedish for some beautoful athomspheric stories of an enchanted isle.
A Mercy Thompson series book one is called Moon Called by Patricia Briggs, Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik, The Keeper of Night by Kylie Lee Baker and The Haunting of Alejandra by V. Castro.
I think that Mercedes Lackey's Arrow Trilogy would be a good starter fantasy series as well. Currently reading this one after watching you talk about it and finished the first book and totally LOVED it. It has the wholesome vibe to it. Currently reading the second book now and looking forward to what happens next. I'm actually loving her writing style and looking to read more by Mercedes Lackey. Thank you for recommending this series as I'm having such a great time with it. It's kind of nice to look back at some of the older fantasies to see where current authors may have gotten some inspiration from.

I love her books. All the songs listed in the trilogy she writes and you can find most of the songs on KZread, some are better than others. After reading Arrows Fall I cannot recommend Battle Dawn enough. It's so catchy and beautiful, but finish the final book or get to near the end before you listen.
been really enjoying booktube lately, including your channel, and i bought a novel to read for fun for the first time in years the other day! 🎉 fantasy, at that. thanks for your informative and engaging videos, definitely taking notes here ✍🏻 love all the subgenres you included!! and the way you talk about books’ plots always makes me interested in what happens :D
Some of my favorite accessible fantasy series' to recommend are the Strange the Dreamer duology by Laini Taylor and the An Ember in the Quartet by Sabaa Tahir. They are both technically YA so easy to understand but cover more adult themes in my opinion and are written so beautifully.😊
Great selection! Have read some and want to read the others 😊 I love pretty much everything Kingfisher has written, especially in her White Rat universe. I’d recommend Penric’s Demon by Lois McMaster Bujold. It is a series but you can just read the fist one. I also really liked Spear by Griffith 😊
I really enjoyed the priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon. Or City of Brass if you're into something political..
So helpful! I appreciate you including newer releases. Sometimes being newer to a genre means back reading what has been loved and discussed + missing out on current discussion. You help me stay relevant with my new fantasy book friends 😅
I would recommend Juliet Marillier as a good starter.
I’m always happy to see Jade City recommended. I just finished the third Greenbone Saga book and I just wasn’t ready to leave. I was so immersed in the world and the characters that Lee created I wanted it to go on with the the next generation. It’s easily in my top three fantasy series now. I always recommend Greenbone Saga and The First Law Trilogy for people starting out their fantasy reading journey, and so far they’ve both been a massive hit every time. Especially for audio book listeners. Both series’ have incredible narrators.
Mistborn has probably been on my TBR forever. I think I’m going to attempt it this year. I would recommend the Killing Moon by NK Jemisin for a fantasy newbie.
I think A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking by T Kingfisher is also a good read for those entering fantasy :)
Green Rider is a good series for anyone who loves Mercedes Lackey or new to adult fantasy. The magic in the world starts slow, the first book just being about a school girl delivering a message that involves ghosts, a magic brooch, and a horse that is smarter than most. Symphony of Ages series is an epic romance fantasy spanning centuries. It is somewhat inspired by Norse mythology. The Unexpected Dragon by Marry Brown is actually a trilogy of books that follows Summerdai on her journey to find a place to belong. With the help of a magical ring that allows her to speak with animals she helps her manajery of friends find places they belong while searching for her own. Theft of Swords follows two men sent to steal a sword, only to find the king dead and tasked with taking the prince to a far off prison setting in motion a chain of events that will lead to the discovery of the true heir to an ancient kingdom lost to time...

'Rebel of the Sands' by Alwyn Hamilton is a fantastic way to start. It's a trilogy and each book is really short by fantasy standards (the first one is barely over 300 pages). The series is SUPER fast-paced and absolutely unputdownable! It's about sand magic and desert chases and scorching sun and train rides at night and charismatic leads and an unforgettable cast of characters. I gave it to my Mom (whom I only give the cream of the crop), then my Grandma (who isn't much of a reader and certainly doesn't read fantasy) and they both read it in a couple of days and LOVED it.
Doppelgänger by Marie Brennan has been the best fantasy series that I’ve read to date.
Tress: Awesome title, beautiful cover art, endearing protagonist. Fairy Tale: It's by Stephen King. Disneyesque. So good.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a great introduction - it's middle grade/YA but very enjoyable to any age range
So many of my favourites in this video!!! I agree that a lot of them are perfect bridge books between YA and Adult.
I highly recommend Kian Ardalan’s The Fantastically Underwhelming Epic of a Dead Wizard and an Average Bard. So good! Yes, that is the full title.
I loved the Clockwork Boys and the Wonder Engines by T. Kingfisher, followed by Swordheart. They were fun reads lots of adventure and interesting world-building and her great writing style and humor.
Bridge Kingdom hat an very calm mystic cover so I have noticed it.
I picked up The Bridge Kingdom on your recommendation a while back and flew through the entire series so fast. ❤ thanks for that
My Rec The Mother of Learning series - Time Travel (month long groundhogs day) wizardry, and a dang good ending - series started out as a web serial and the author is finally publishing the physical books!

Yessss adore legends&lattes 🥲
Great recommendations, I agree that Warbreaker is a good place to start with more epic fantasy. Tbh agree with all these 😅
I would also recommend Fourth Wing. It’s got a little spice so be aware of that, but I think it’s pretty easy to get into because the focus of the first book is mostly the war college and doesn’t get into magic until they try to bond with their dragons. Also possibly one dark window. The magic system is really unique but it’s not hard to grasp. I also cannot remember if this is adult or YA but Emma Hamm is an indie author that I love. Her Dragon of Umbra series is so good.
the undertaking of hart and mercy is so underrated and one of the best books Ive read this year. You should definitely check it out!
Totally unrelated to your question, but I LOVE YOUR HAIR! Are those natural curls or can you tell me what you use to get it like that? And I love your book recs too! I have new books to check out and buy.😎
These are great recommendations, thank you for sharing! I did read Legends & Latte and it was such a nice, lightweight read!
I would love to recommend Small Miracles by Olivia Atwater. I finished it last night. If you loved Half a Soul, please read this! I enjoyed HAS, but Small Miracles is probably my favorite I read from Olivia Atwater. She takes some references to Good Omens so it has that satirical element.
Also The Bridge Kingdom may be difficult to acquire in ebook form outside of the Amazon Ecosystem
Recommend the Gentleman Bastards series by Scott Lynch.. it's part Ocean's 11, Guy Ritchie banter. Small warning there's a possibility the author may not finish the series. The Riyria Revelations by Michael J Sullivan is also a very good read
Thank you for these recommendations! There’s a few I didn’t know about and I’m going to check them out 😊
Thank you for this! Diving back into fantasy so excited for this list.
Ordinary Monsters by JM Miro, I flew through it and it was my first fanatsy book in years I think.
This is a long shot for you to see, but where did you get your hair clip?? It’s so cute.
Bridge kingdom is such anamazing book, so good tha i hated Lara! My sweet and perfect Aren didn’t deserve that! I wanted to become the FL and keep him away from her! Lol My problem with SJM in general is that I believe she is great at writing stand alones. The first books of ACOTAR and TOG are really good, extremely similar to one another but good. The problem are the second books… snd then the third, fourth, fifth, etc. Her stories don’t have the strength to be stretch so much so they become ridiculous snd boring lol. I haven’t read anything from VE Shwab, which one do you recommend to start with?? So many good recs that my tbr is growing!!!
I am reading Cerulean See, in a bookshop, every gew days. It is cozy. It was very very nice in the beginning but by chapter 14 it is getting boring. I am going to push till the end of it.
You forgot one of the most amazing Urban Fantasy Series. Come on Elliot it’s The Dresden Files…

I read all of the Dresden books last year. Loved them.
Happy May 🌷🌺🦚🌸🌹
I think Atlas Six by Olivie Blake is a good start to Adult Fantasy, very assessable. Or maybe City of Brass, second and third book is a little bit heavier
I still need to try ACOTAR...I will bee so curious to see if it is a hit or huge miss for me 🤣🤣
Looking for book recommendations with female lead and NO romance of any genre. Suggestions?
I’ve read all except the first one ahah!
I rarely recommend books coz my friends wouldn’t like what I love. I’m into fantasy books like Brandon Sanderson’s. On the other hand, my friend likes paranormal romance like werewolves and fae and I hate those kinds lol.. despite knowing this, she always recommends those to me and I never pick them up.
I need recs for low fantasy, minimum world building romance spicy books.
really good video thank you
I have the feeling that standalones doesnt really exist anymore, as soon as it is successful, there will be at least a second book.

Babel by R.f. kwong. Best book I have read this year!
I must be a part of the .01% of people who didnt enjoy DotMG. It was fun for first 100 pages but then the pacing got weird.
WHATS THIS MISTBORN EDITION?
ACOTAR was like 3/5 but boy the 2nd BOOK?? (ACOMAF) LEAGUES better! So I’d say read the first 2 books then decide 🙂
