Academy of Finland Award 2022, Riikka Puhakka: how nature affects wellbeing & health of young people

Ғылым және технология

The 2022 Academy Award was presented to Riikka Puhakka, an Academy Research Fellow at the University of Helsinki, Lahti University Campus, for her outstanding research on the interactions between the environment and health. Puhakka’s research adopts an exceptionally broad approach to human-nature interaction, analysing the interactions especially from the perspective of recreational and tourism-based use of nature.
According to Puhakka, childhood and adolescence can be seen as particularly important ages for getting out and about in nature and forming a connection with nature. Children and young people’s connection to nature and their responsible attitude towards the environment are also key issues for the global sustainability crisis and the future of our planet.
“It’s very important to think about how to support and encourage different families to spend time outdoors and how to ensure that young people have equal access to nature and its benefits for their wellbeing. It’s also essential that policymakers, professionals and citizens have easy access to the latest research on the interactions between the environment and people,” Puhakka says.
