ACA Hurricane 130 MKII Tornado Siren Test - Alert - Darien, IL (Final Test)

Mitchell, Chris, Bruin, and I decided to test fate last minute and head out to Darien. Back in March, only the blower and rotator engaged on this, however, the FD confirmed it was operational, and that they were actively trying to get it replaced. Enjoy!

Why does it wind down so fast? The one in Milwaukee winds down slower and its the same with others.

What a happy-sounding siren in alert. Major-third pitch interval and nice full overtone series coming from that horn. If this and a ACA-130/P-50 were tuned to the same key, it would sound like a gorgeous pipe organ cadence from a Bach cantata haha

They can't be "tuned". Mechanical sirens work more like fans than instruments

It's ironic because Darien had a EF-3 tornado touchdown in June, and the sirens never went off. 😑

Back at it again with da hurricane.
I almost went to this that day. It was between this, the single tone Bensenville Banshee, and a home test. Can only imagine what the meetup will look like for this Hurricane's final test.

Extremely sad that it’s getting replaced this year! Looked all over KZread since 2017 to find every Darien hurricane video. The Darien Hurricane is my 2nd favorite siren.

It’s because the blower is dying and it sounds like a power tool
Hopefully a collector will save it, but we shall see. That blower sadly sounds like it's on it's last legs.

Nice video!.. though a bother of mine -.. if they had someone look at that blower/blower motor and sorted the issue or replaced the electric motor on it they wouldn’t really need to buy a new siren at all 🤷♂️

Operation and maintenance costs were too high and it broke frequently

They did, however it’s old technology. Sirens like this repeatedly fail and it got to the point where it was unreliable. As a whole it would be cheaper to replace it than to keep fixing it.

They tried fixing the Hurricane many many times, the whole Hurricane and the blower was just destroyed to the point that it couldn't run anymore and costing too much so it needed to go.
It's kinda sad because this siren is going to be replaced this year.

I wish they hadn’t replaced the hurricane. I mean sure,it was getting old and out dated,but it was still running very well! They could have just swapped around some parts,but parts for hurricanes are pretty rare,so they just figured they should just replace it

This thing may have sounded ok, but in reality it was having serious blower issues. The reason why these are so rare is because they didn't sell well thanks to their crappy blower design. It was doomed since the beginning of its problems.
